Thank you but this is just one of my most favourite female singers ! The sexy girl in my Avatar is Sharon Den Adel, a Dutch rockdiva and leadsinger of the fantastic symphonic-metal band "Within Temptation"!

Their Album "The Silent Force" is my most favourite Album!

Niafunke & Savane by the late Ali Farka Toure, that genius of a guitar player from Mali.

He burst into limelight with that collaboration with Ry Cooder called Talking Timbuktu.

Picked both of these at Rhythm House.

Outstanding !

Finally took a chance and shopped at Rhythm House after a break of over 10 years. Quick list of some of the stuff I picked out, only to indicate the sort of selection they are carrying:
The Premium Collection - 75 Classical Masterworks (from Deutsche Grammophon, yes I am the typical Classical newbie who falls for this sort of thing. LOUSY packaging though...grrr...just paper sleeves, no liner notes)
Ella Fitzgerald and Friends - For Lovers (good collaborations with Getz, Ellington, Basie, etc)
Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong - Ella and Louis (needs no introduction, what a treat)
Billie Holiday - 1935-1958
Stan Getz - The Very Best Of
Stan Getz & Carlos Jobim - Their Greatest Hits (awful title but nice collection)
The Best of Bill Withers (why didn't I get a Bill Withers album before? What a voice)
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (SACD hybrid) (I...uhm...didn't..er...have this in my collection....)
B.B. King - His Definitive Greatest Hits (bit of a disappointment, poor recording quality but he shines as always)
Johnny Cash - Man in Black (pleasantly surprised to find this compilation is different from the US version)
Coldplay - Parachutes/Rush of../Live 2003 (everyone needs a bit of rock now and then...and its carbon-neutral so don't give me a hard time)
Men At Work - Contraband:the best of (replacing an old cd never returned by borrower)

So there...still the same old disappointing mess as far as arrangement of CDs goes. Lot of Jazz CDs from Verve. No Chopin in the Classical section - are you kidding? Anyway I guess its a step up from the days when you walked in, asked for jazz and were handed Kenny G.

I agree with all you said.
However, Anand is a nice fellow [senior sales man]. Does know a lot & is very very helpful.
The other McPau [I forget his name] handles the Classical section, talks too much and thinks he is the father of classical music and audio set up [Wayne - is his name - I think], but if you flatter his ego, he will show you some nice hidden treasures - Decca & Phillips et all !!
Do try these 2 guys when you visit next. Anand is a real sweat heart. Really helpful.

Briskeby - Jeans For Onassis (2000)

A nice rarity from the Norwegian Band Briskeby. The cute female vocals of Lisa Karlsnes are a Dream!

Within Temptation - The Heart Of Everything (2007)

This is a very spectacular and extreme dynamic Symphonic-Metal Album. Sharon Den Adel is one of my most favourite singing Goddesses!
The only annoying disatvantage on this album is the peak clipping in the recording of some songs.

amazon.de
Nightwish - Century Child (2002)

Now my collection of Nightwish-Albums with the classical vocals Tarja Turunen is complete. I'm a little bit sad, that the band had fired Tarja in 2005. I'm relieved that she has started a successful solo-career.

Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002)

Coldplay - X & Y (2005)

U2 - The best of 1990-2000

This compilation is an essential rarity now. U2's Song "Miss Sarajevo", that I had been searching for, was only released on that compilation. Bono Fox had a duet with Luciano Pavarotti on it. The Production of this great CD had been stopped.

Scorpions - Pure Instinct (1996)

A very nice paradoxal cover and relaxed classic scorpions-style Rock!

Thank you very much, your guidance is truly appreciated. I will be sure to seek them out during my next visit. I think I will go back only to pick up more Jazz or Classical titles - those seems to be the only worthwhile genres there. They should be more adventurous with their Rock selections and pick up some stuff from the many excellent independent labels from North America.

I have to say perhaps my earlier message was a bit harsh, they seem to be very responsive. Got a quick reply to my comment to them that SACDs should be stacked separately and in a separate category on their web site. They also mentioned they can get a large selection of jazz, classical, rock SACDs for 700-1,000. Very pleased that they are living up to their legendary status.

Not sure if the perceived (but ever-so-slight) rise in quality is a placebo effect. Not the vast leap I was expecting (hoping for?). It sounds a bit dull on these low-end speakers+player but clearly better than my previous CD version.

Yes, I should've been specific. I was referring to the SACD stereo layer. I have not heard the CD or the multichannel SACD layer yet. My AVR is not yet hooked up but I would like to hear multichannel on it just to see what the fuss is about. When I said it sounded "dull" in my previous post I think it was just the reflexive response of one who has heard bright, shiny CD sound for too long -- maybe I mistook the cleaner, warmer sound for something else. In any case, it seems like a much better mastering than the previous release.

I recently got these CDs:

Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else. This CD has superb music. Highly recommended. Miles Davis on trumpet.
Duke Ellington - 70th Birthday Concert, recorded live in the UK. This 2-CD album has some superb music. Highly recommended.
Gene Harris - A little piece of heaven. recorded live at a winery. Excellent music & he sounds much like the late Oscar Peterson. Highly recommended.
Wille & Lobo - Gypsy Boogaloo. Good music. excellent Flamenco guitaring if you like that sort of thing.
Madeleine Peyroux - Dreamland. Boy does she sound like Billie Holliday or what! Folksy music rendered in a very smooth 1950s voice.
Scorpions - Deadly Sting/The best of. Has some of my favourite tracks. Love the nude girl on the cover!! It seems that almost every album artwork has this "feature"!

Dropped in at "Planet M" (D.N. Road/V.T.) and was pleasantly surprised by their collection -- quite a few gems here but you're on your own in the hunt. I had a bad impression after visiting their Phoenix Mills outlet (avoid!!) but this place will become a regular destination for me. Sadly very few SACDs but here is what I picked up:

Steel Dan - Gaucho [SACD]

(This is a brilliantly recorded disc! Reference material)

Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition, Night On The Bare Mountain, etc. - Gergiev [SACD]

Chopin: Piano Works - Ashkenazy [SACD]

Beethoven Piano Sonatas Op.26 & 27 No.1 & 2 - Alfred Brendel [CD]

Interpol - Our Love To Admire [CD]

Slight let-down from their earlier effort

Eva Cassidy "song Bird" Lp and CD is one of the rare convergence of good pop music and recording. Sad that she left us with only a handful of songs, listening and spreading her music is the best we can do for her soul.

Ordered the following titles from www.CD-wow.com:

Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out [SACD]
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King [HDCD]

Received them today, 10 days late and both with extensive damage to the jewel cases. One damaged so badly a large section almost broke off. Both CDs themselves are okay but one has a superficial scratch. Have informed them of the same. Just want to alert fellow members to this. The cause is the poor packaging (just a slightly padded envelope like the Photo Mailers you get in the US) On the bright side, the free shipping was a money saver. Also received them at my door and no duties/levies charged.

Would like to hear experiences of anyone who has used www.CDconnection.com

Abhi, so far as Hindustani Classical music is concerned, your route, IMO shld be to first do a lot of listening, see which instruments/Artistes & Raags appeal to you, and then start off by buying the best quality CD you can get i.e, do not buy just because the rec qlty is great.
There are instruments and artistes & Raags which you may not find to your liking at this stage of your exploration of this Genre.Santoor/Sitar /Flute are inherently very musical sounding so you could do some listening of Cds by Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma/Ustad Vilayat Khan/Ustad Shahid Parvez/Pt Nikhil Bannerjee/Pt Hari prasad Chaurasia, pick out Raags/Semi Classical performances that you find appealing. But do start with the greats of this genre-the Anoushkas' can come later.
Channda Dhara have a very limited selection & out of it, you get just a few titles, so may have to settle for cds from SaREGaMa, Sony Nad,etc.
But first, I repeat, do a lot of listening....it would help if you know someone who is into Hindustani classical & has a nice collection-he could play music for you & help you develop your own taste.
