Nils Lofgren - Face the Music (9 CD/DVD-Set)

The stellar career of singer-songwriter-guitarist Nils Lofgren receives a comprehensive retrospective in Face the Music, limited edition nine-CD/one-DVD boxed set that is individually hand signed and numbered by the artist.

The collection s music component, selected by Lofgren himself, comprises 169 tracks, stretching back to Lofgren s early work with his Washington, D.C.-area band Grin, which he founded at the age of 17 in 1968, and surveying both his major-label solo albums and independent self-released music. Two of the CDs contain 40 previously unreleased tracks and rarities. The DVD features 20 video clips selected from a body of performances as diverse as Nils career.
A detailed, lavishly illustrated 136-page booklet, with an introduction by noted rock journalist Dave Marsh, contains Lofgren s track-by-track commentary and personal reflections on his work, as well as his tours of duty as a sideman with such luminaries as Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and Ringo Starr. The set also contains homages to Lofgren by such colleagues as Bonnie Raitt, Joe Walsh, Sting, Bono, and Paul Rodgers.

In its entirety, the set gives a full-length, intimately detailed picture of the performer Neil Young who hired the 18-year-old Lofgren to play piano and guitar on After the Gold Rush in 1969 calls an inspiration to me for many years. A true triple threat, Lofgren has distinguished himself as the writer of melodic, affecting, and hard-rocking songs, a sensitive and seemingly ageless singer, and a guitarist of incomparable power and imagination.

The work is over, the result? Amazing. Hardest thing I ever worked on. AF gave me the challenge: Can we reproduce a pair of Time-Life rock comps using all album versions from master tapes, to DSD/SACD? The answer: Damn near killed me, but yes.

I don't have the track listing handy but if you ever wanted to hear a high rez version of some of these songs, this will probably be the ONLY place they will ever be released. All the studios cooperated, we got the Moody Blues transferred in the UK under my supervision. Master to DSD, album version of NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN. Wait until you hear Elton's DANIEL, amazing high-rez sound. And even WILD THING by the Troggs is in true DSD! Crazy.

Oh, the Foreigner stuff (FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME and HOT BLOODED) sound so amazing right from the masters. You'll hear. Oh, and if you love LIGHT MY FIRE, you will hear the original correct speed version of the album version in stereo for the first time.

wirklich keine schlechte Tracklist, muss man schon sagen ...

aber hab ich ja schon alles - und ne Legends-Playlist ist gleich erstellt

aber das mit Light my fire und first time in korrekter Geschwindkeit stimmt so wohl nicht - oder hat die nicht der gute Steve selbst damals schon auf die DCC LP mit drauf gepackt??

Amused To Death in 5.1 Surround for the first time!

Talk about a blockbuster: This is it. A very limited double LP originally released more than 20 years ago, Amused To Death is reborn on 200-gram double LP and Hybrid Multichannel SACD, including a 5.1 Surround Sound mix, from Analogue Productions. Amused to Death was mixed by Pink Floyd's producer/engineer James Guthrie, and now, using those same analog tapes, he's mastering the album for multichannel SACD. And Doug Sax and Guthrie are working together to master the vinyl, to be pressed to perfection by Quality Record Pressings!

P.S. Der Stereo-Mix ist ein Remix! Also die Sony Mastersound Pressung behalten.

Cleopatra Records will reissue Remember the Future, the classic 1973 Nektar release, in a collectible 3D cover, with 3 CDs of material including the original album. This box will add in a full CD of radio edits, while the third CD features the well-known live March 27, 1974 Chipping Norton Studio sessions. This 3D Box is planned for May 27.

Der erste Platz für die schlechteste Verpackung: Emmylou Harris "Wrecking Ball" Deluxe!

Die CD klingt nicht besser als das Original, dafür ist die DVD umso besser. Wahnsinnige Vintage-Mikrofon-Sammlung von Daniel Lanois, die er auch für das Recording einsetze. Nicht minder beeindruckend, die Auswahl an gesammelten Instrumenten in seinem Wohnhaus-Studio in New Orleans. Übrigens.... Neil Youngs Gesang und Harmonica wurde im Wohnzimmer mitgeschnitten.

Wie Sting "Nothing Like The Sun" o. Madonna "Immaculate Collection" ein damals in Mode gekommener Q-Mix (breitere Stereo-Abbildung etc). Spekulationen welcher Mix für CD, SACD und LP verwendet wird. Ich gehe davon aus, dass auf dem SACD Stereo-Layer der neue Stereo-Remix zu finden ist.

JC zu den Satriani Remaster

I have never been a big fan of re-mixing classic albums. They are "classic" for some reason so why mess with that. I have heard some 3 and 4 track jazz re-mixes that still preserved the magic and now sound amazing so I think thats cool. But trying to re-mix "Surfing with the Alien" would be insane. I know that because I tried once.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we did are very best to make the box-set sound as good as we could to OUR EARS. If that meant changing something from the past 25 years we did it. If you prefer the sound of the older releases we can agree to dis-agree. The first generation of CDs sounded like crap to us. The vinyl was much better.

With all due respect, I believe the 1st Japanese CD pressing is a unique mastering.

Bernie Grudman did the mastering and when he was done I took the tapes home with me. So unless someone broke into my house and stole the tapes and took them to Japan, with all due respect, you are wrong.

The reference is our ears and what we hope to get out of the given recording not something that was produced long ago in a faraway land. The MFSL doesn't work because the "purist" approach never works with rock music. It was never meant to have all that dynamic range. This is way I find this obsession over dynamic range a joke. It's like telling a painter that you would like his painting more if he used a different shade of blue in the sky like his older works.

Satriani's Kommentar zum Mastering des Boxset:

Legacy Recordings gave Satriani and Cuniberti carte blanche in terms of budget and schedule, allowing the two to go back and bake tapes, resample sounds and scrutinize each track to their hearts' content. “As we went through the material, I became thrilled at what a great opportunity it was," Satriani says. "We were able to right some of the wrongs of past production, to tell the stories correctly. Sometimes records can be mastered in the heat of the moment – everybody's nervous; there's a release date to meet – so hindsight can be a real blessing."

Audio Fidelity kommt mit 2x Prog-Alben im Juli. Eins aus den 70ern, das andere aus den 80ern.

Die andere Überraschung folgt im August.......
