Twentieth Century Fox is bringing the Japanese anime TV series "Cowboy Bebop" to the big screen, with Keanu Reeves attached to star as a bounty hunter traveling through space in 2071.

One of the big titles in anime, "Bebop" is set in a time where "astral gates" make interstellar travel possible. Humanity, decimated by a lunar explosion resulting from a gate accident, spread out across the solar system, as did crime, which gave rise to the use of bounty hunters.

Reeves would play Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter and former member of a crime syndicate. Spiegel, along with Jet Black, a fellow bounty hunter and former cop, are the two pilots of the spaceship Bebop.

Peter Craig is writing the script.

The show, which first aired on Tokyo TV and satcaster Wowow during the late 1990s, was strongly influenced by American music, even featuring action sequences -- both space battles and mano a mano -- timed to U.S. melodies.

Reeves' association with the project leaked in the summer when Fox and 3 Arts Entertainment began the process of acquiring the rights from Sunrise Studios.

Erwin Stoff, Reeves' longtime manager, is producing through 3 Arts. Joshua Long will serve as executive producer.

Sunrise president Kenji Uchida, the TV series' director of animation, Shinichiro Watanabe, and series writer Keiko Nobumoto will serve as associate producers. Series producer Masahiko Minami will serve as production consultant.

Wenn ich mir so den DBZ Trailer anschaue, möchte ich glaube ich keine Cowboy Bebop Verfilmung

Ich glaube ja kaum, dass es gelingen wird den genialen Charme der Serie einzufangen

Aber immerhin stimmt mich der letzte Abschnitt zuversichtlich:

Anime-Verfilmungen sind stets sehr gefährlich, weil Animationen einfach Möglichkeiten bieten, die im Realfilm nur schwer umsetzbar sind.

Hier kommt es dann auf`s Budget an, wieviel die Produzenten bereit sind auszugeben. Nach dem Schrott den Kenau in letzter Zeit gemacht hat, wageich jedoch zu bezweifeln, dass da was wird.

Interview mit dem Produzenten:

The truth of the matter of is, I’m not going to know anything else until there’s a script," Stoff tells iF, "but we’d like to make it next year."
Peter Craig is on board to pen the script, and Stoff is quick to note that the story will pick up with Spiegel already in action.
"It’s not an origin story," says Stoff. "We start with him, when he is in his present life already."
Many of the key people involved in the Anime series, including the series director and writer Shinichirô Watanabe. Most importantly, Stoff says, Watanabe will be involved every step of the way, since he will be an associate producer on the film alongside the anime series’ producer Kenji Uchida and show writer Keiko Nobumoto.
"First of all, we’re honoring the series," says Stoff. "I don’t know how many people can say this, but the first thing we did was go over and meet with Watanabe. We started there. He will be the first guy to read a script when it’s done. We’ll discuss directors with him. As far as the cast goes, I can’t tell you who is going to play what, but I can’t imagine that we’re not going to have a totally multi-ethnic cast."

Interview mit Reeves:

"There's a draft of the script, but the writer did such a great job [that] in order to make the movie, you would need half a billion dollars,"
The writer in question is likely Peter Craig, who previously spoke out about how "extremely faithful" his screenplay was to the original anime series. Craig reportedly met with the anime's producers back in December and went home with a detailed letter regarding the adaptation.
However, Reeves indicated that the writer's adherence to the galaxy-spanning adventure of the full entire series might prove a little daunting for production.
"So the studio went, 'This movie is fantastic and it would cost half a billion dollars," laughed Reeves, "so he's doing a rewrite."
As far as who'll be appearing in the film, Reeves hinted that everyone from Spike to Ein could factor into the movie's storyline.
"Everyone is in there," said Reeves.
"The only challenge was to make a satisfying western narrative out of the kind of storytelling that happens," he added. "There's a great draft, so we're just trying to pull it back a little bit now."

Hallo,

mir hat die Serie sehr gut gefallen - samt der tollen Musik!

Mal schauen - und so von Special Effects hat es da nicht gewimmelt - aber die Typen waren extrem COOOOL - sollte man mit den richtigen Leuten hinbekommen....

Scanner Darkly kenn ich nich, aber wo war The Day the Earth stood still denn Schrott?
Naja, vermutlich definieren wir Schrott wohl anders.

Abgesehen davon: eine Neu/Real-Verfilmung oder Fortsetzung kann nie etwas vorhandenes sterben lassen oder beeinträchtigen.

Ich finde The Crow trotz mehrerer unsäglicher Fortsetzungen, so wie einer Serie immer noch gut, ebenso wie Starship Troopers, Matrix usw.

Immer diese unhaltbare Angst vor solschen Dingen.

Wenns gut wird, freut euch, wenns scheisse wird ignoriert es doch einfach.

Also Fan des Orginals (der damals eine wirklich reale Angast widerspiegelte, nämlich die Atomare Bedrohung des Kalten Krieges) fand ich die Neuverfilmung mit seiner echt traurigen Umwelt-Bedrhungs-Masche als absolut miesen Greenpeace-Huldigungs-Müll. Aber das ist wohl eher Thema für einen andere Thread.

Zu Cowboy-Bebop:
Der Anime ist absoluter Kult und mit abstand der Beste seine Genres. Insofern müsste da scon viel Herzblut und noch VIEL mehr Budget dahinterstecken, um daraus was Gutes zu machen.

Um mal was Positives zu schreiben und mir selbst ein wenig Hoffnung zu geben: Keanu hat es schon einmal geschafft, brisanten Stoff gut wiederzugeben: Johnny Mnemonic!
