If you live in India, amazon.com (and online stores like it) or your next trip abroad tends to be the only opportunity to get your hands on good music. However a recent trip to Rhythm House here in Mumbai made me realize there may be a glimmer of hope. Their Jazz section (woefully small) had a couple of gems and this started me thinking: what if there ARE good music stores out there in Mumbai?

So, fellow forum members, do share your thoughts. Do you know of some music store in your city where browsing the entire catalog takes at least 30 minutes and not 30 seconds? Where inquiries about <insert favourite band/musician> does not draw blank stares? Please do share!

Sir, I must say, you sure are a lucky person.
At least you find what you are looking for in RH.
I have never managed to get what I want there.
Either it is an Indian Pressing or not 'imported'
I am forced to buy from a very very slender choice.
However, RH is the only option that exists in Mumbai that I know of.
In Pune I buy a bit from Oceanic.
The CD's on Amazon [older CD Now] are very well priced, it is the 'freight' to India that gets to be expensive.
The CD's in India are really cheap. Around 7 to 9 US $'s on an average.
In UK & Europe they just kill you. I just returned back with 106 CD's from Vienna and the average price of CD's was in the 12 to 22 Euro's. Mad. Pure insanity.

Offline:

1. Music World, Ansal Plaza, New Delhi
2. Music Land, PVR Market, Saket

Online:
-Amazon.com shipping charges are huge and sometime whimsical custom officer levy custom tax

Abroad:
-European prices are steep about Euro 20 per CD on an average.

Yes, that is mad;

Buying CD's in music stores is just not possible any more.
I prefer to buy from speciality labels - direct i.e.
If one buys in bulk, then we can get the CD's at 'slightly compatative' prices.

Else online retailers are good. I use Tower Records.

Cost of doing business in most west european countries in high and a customs duty (VAT) of 17-20 % does not help.

you can get "deals" for arouns 12-15 Euros in speciality chains..but US is the best for this. Singapore is not too bad either.

I'd wandered into a music shop near Fountain. (forgot the name). They had a few CD sets from Telarc. It was either Beethoven or Mozart I think. A collection of symphonies.

I buy Jazz and Western classical titles from Oceanic , Pune. This shop allows me to sample CD tracks before buying. It is well stocked and sales staff is quite knowledgeable.

Landmark at Forum has an amazing Jazz and classical music selection. Best I've seen in India. Bangalore unfortunately for you.

Out of all music stores in Bangalore, Kolkata & Delhi, Landmark in Bangalore has the best music collection.

Amazon/Deep discount/tower.com are great places to buy if you are in USA...but I like to go to retail stores. Newbury Comics is where I go to buy music these days.

If you can't get to Rhythm House offline, here is where you can find them online

www.rhythmhouseindia.com .

They deliver all over India, apparently.

Thanks to all of you for your inputs. I am pleased to discover Oceanic and Landmark whose presence I wasn't aware of. Hope they will follow Rhythm House and have an online presence making it possible for us out-of-state folks to order stuff.

Zhopudey, I know the store you are speaking of but cant recall the name - its on the same street as Akbarally's right?

Bhagwan69, I guess I lucked out! I spotted a good Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong disc but it was SACD only with no CD layer. I used to shop at Rhythm House in my school and college days (almost on a daily basis!) but once Amazon.com became a reality there was no point wasting time in local stores. I had hoped that situation had changed.

Sdhawan, thanks Doc. If I am ever up north I know where to look. Surprised to hear of customs duty being levied on Amazon imports. I have only ordered 3-4 times to my own address here in Mumbai and never had to pay anything. Whew!

Thanks again, everyone (Shahrukh, Krish, diskspinner, Jeeves G S Madhav, zhopudey, Maney, Arj, bhagwan69, SDhawan).

When you walk from CST and reach fountain, its in the lane on your left. 3rd or 4th shop. Its called "Music something or the other"

Another vote for Landmark in Bangalore.

'Calypso' in Jayanagar has a very good music collection.

Bangalore -
Ladmark has a decent collection though not consistent

Planet M has a good collection of classical, in fact they have a separate room dedicated to classical music. They used to have a good jazz collection but they have shrunk it now for some reason.

For rock you just have to be plain lucky to get some of the artistes. Both PlanteM and Landmark get some good albums but you got to keep looking.

For jazz, there's a place called Habitat on Church Street. Its primarily a DVD rental place with a small but good collection of jazz.

Delhi -
I would go with Doc's reco on both counts. The music world at Ansal's used to have a great collection some years ago. Dunno how it is now. You could find some rare rock titles at musicland, its a small shop with a good collection.

Internationally, the best shop I've been to is Ameoba in SFO. Huge collection (used and new) in all genres, including vinyls.

Online, I strongly recommend secondspin.com. It sells used CDs/DVDs. You might run into some really rare out-of-prints here. They ship international without the CD jewel box (but with all the sleeves, literature etc.) which reduces the shipping charges and the (I think) customs.

In India, try musicyogi.com. They have a decent collection and do 'cash on delivery' in Bangalore.

Wow! Thanks, soulforged. Those are some solid gold leads right there. I am especially grateful for the musicyogi link - that seems the most promising. Very nice collection - I think I'll buy something from them very soon!

Hi Delhi Guys !

Today I visited the "Music World" at Ansal Plaza, New Delhi. These days they have a very good collection of imported music CDs and some good promotional schemes running too.

It's worth checking out at your leisure time.
