In such cases, we could try getting the chap who imitates him the closest. It could still be a better experience than trying our luck with a hi-fi
Best part is, we won't need to worry about room treatments either Whether its in a room carpeted floor to ceiling, or whether in the bathroom, Norah Jones will still sound just like Norah Jones (and eminem will be just as irritating)

Guys, there is SO MUCH talk of the LIVE experience being the ultimate, so I thought I would muddy this discussion a bit...

We spend on stereo, for the FUN of listning to an Illusion, in our homes. In some ways, I guess the illusion is Exagerated... but then that also adds to the Fun, no ?
(Very precise Spatial imaging is one exanple)

A lot of live shows use electronic re-inforcement ( Amps and speakers ) so there really is no REAL Live in these cases.

On the Stereophile forum, one post mentioned that he goes to a Rock Concert with Ear plugs, because its just too loud ! I wonder if his ear plugs have a flat freq response ? !

Some albums INTENTIONALLY distort / change the sound so live again is not relevant.

The point I am getting at, is should be holding a torch to live ? The recorded sounds by themselves could be atleast as ENJOYABLE, even if they do Not Replicate 'LIVE'

hi amp_nut, i subscribe to that view as well.

another thing is that live performances, unless you are in the very front are always mono ie the only imaging is the one with the eyes, the audio is almost the same in both channels

actual live performance is either one with superior amplification and acoustics (very few in the world) or with unamplified music

one advantage that rock concerts have is being open air it is very rarely reflected sounds but i would call it neither detailed nor transparent !

ampnut,

for western classical music, in many cases it is live and not amplified with electronics...ah ! the sheer joy of it all ! I will alsways hold a torch to that and that will always be my frame of reference.

i have heard a schubert piece live in the OPERA at paris. unamplified live and beutiful.

last thing you will even think of thinking is the imagin et al since it does ont matter
;

I have the very same piece conducted by yehudi menuin (on a stradivarious)

it si different, but i enjoy it more with the recollection of the live performance !

but how often and how many can you hear that way !

btw we are seriously OT with regard to the intention of the thread !

let me start with my dream system

1 Avant garde trio
2 avant garde brasshorn as the sub
3 dcs verdi, verona, Purcell and Elgar Plus D/A Combination for source preamp combination
4 sugden Masterclass AA stereo ,power amp (I know, but i love the house sound)
5. PS AUDIO P1000 sinewave power regenerator for the power amps and PS audio P300 for the source
6. nordost valkyjra all the way from digital to speaker
7. now comes the killer a 25 by 40 by 16 underground room , fully carpeted and wood panelled
8. 440V 3 phased power into the room

all the above will surely make my hifi dream come true and my chest swell with owners prideimages/smilies/insane.gif

ANdthen i would like my wadia/sugden/JMR setup in my bedroom to make me smile

Well, I'm not into western classical, but I do prefer unplugged albums of all artists
But for some occasions where the artist is unavailable, a 5 channel setup of Stradivari Homage would be good enough

Arj, since cost is no consideration, why not order Rashtrapati Bhavan for room and a piece of all the HiFi eqpt there is?
And then just wander from room to room, admiring all the setups?

Hi !

Be it western classical or Indian classical, be it gazal or Punjabi folk, live performance is the ultimate experience which can never be equalled.

But there are many a mediocre talent who use recording effects to cover up their shortcomings. And to enjoy these recordings you need entry level equipment.

I don't know about the ideal equipment, but for the room I would prefer to be on a beautiful mountain, by a lake, by a riverside, on a beach, on a desert, in a boat ...

...sometimes alone and sometimes in company of others...

...good tea, strong coffee .... (I'm a teetotaler .. ) ...

Hearing music (or sounds) is a psychoacoustic phenomenon ... it may be 75 % acoustic but definitely 25 % psychic... so when you plan for your dream (or real life) music setup don't forget to take care of your psyche

How about a Bryston + TMC setup? If I emigrate to Canada, I will use my dollars for that. Dr is right. A good view unstresses the mind and makes all music sound better.

Sorry Arj, this is a "dreamscape". I was referring to The Monitor Company (TMC). They are American and have tied up with Canadian Bryston to co-sell each other's products. This combo is extensively used in the world's best studios. And the Bryston's have a 20-yr warranty. So If I had the dollars, this would be a great setup logically.

Of course, every person would have a different subjective experience of such a setup.

Yes Manek, Classical music is one of the few music generes that rarely require amplification.

Though I have a formal background in Piano Playing and theory as a kid (Grade Viii ), it dosent float my boat any longer. In fact I tell myself that its my red flag... the day I flip for classical, a sure sign that I have turned senile

Lucky you... can derive pleasure from Classical Music.

Bhagwan, believe it or not, your question has almost got me DEPRESSED !

It made me realise how little I have heard and experienced as far as top class systems, and even from the little I have heard, there is Very VERY little that I have flipped for HARD.

Your question brought into focus my ignorance.

To be honest, I cannot think of a current generation set of components that I have heard, and would provide me audiophile Nirvana !

The search goes on, in the mean time, though I know my own system is modest, it provides me reasonable joy.

Anyone out there who would care to invite me over for a listen to a Great system ?

Thanks !

Take 2 glasses thrice a day and 1 SOS.

And then any setup will sound great. You'll hear the instruments you never heard before.

Hi Bhagwan,

A request .... could you please edit your above posts and ionclude the Price of these Esoteric Components ?

You had once pointed out to me that typically ( atleast in Mumbai ) the largest Investment is the Real Estate. The Room as Real Estate costs Much more than most stereo systems that are put in that room.

Mumbai's Top Real Estate now runs at US $ 1,000 per sq foot, and I was wondering how the 800 sq foot room would weigh in, as an investment, compared to your 'Ultimate' system.

Thanks

Ouch! Do you really mean that Reminds me of the time when I was listening to Celine's "my heart will go on" and a crazy adman punched my speakers of my desk

I kinda like Aqua's "barbie girl", even on my studio setup. It's real cute. U know it's just not human to listen to Chopin, Rachaminov and Patricia Barber all day!

Hello Sir !

I would love to, but it kills the fun.

The set up # A is surly cheaper than the room - 1000 X 300 = 3,00,000/- That set up should surely be less that 50 % of the room cost - sans Rives Level 3.

The problem is in set up # B.
There although the room is bigger [much bigger] & therefore the cost of the room is higher @ 800/- K, the set up too is very exp. It will be close to 500/- K room acoustics included.
I know the specific prices, but let us keep them to ourselves. Please. Thanks.
