Hi all...how do you guys rate ECOSSSE cables ? I have found a dealer in Bombay(where I live) who sells them and obviously swears by them.

What do you guys think of QED cables ? They are going to be launched in end of this month.

I am told both of them have a formidable reputation especially in EUROPE....

Any pearls of wisdom ?

Hi Manek !

My $2 paise.. I have found them both to be good reliable reasonably priced brands

Ecosse are pretty good..especially their Interconnects. I use the entry level Composer sometimes and it is a very balanced cable..

I use QED (Flat Line) in my HT system speaker wiring and have found them to be pretty good as well..are known to be good quality at a reasonable price. they also have good terminations from Bananas /Spades to RCA'a

Which are the areas good for Audio shopping in Mumbai ? I may be there for a day or two in august..

cheers!

bandra...and crossroads in tardeo would be the places.

QED are to be launched shortly and ecosse has just been launched. I gotta take mine and hear the difference and then compare it I guess.

Hey Manek,

QED has some very good Wire terminations as well. are these also being launched in Mumbai?

BTW..always wanted to ask you this...what kind of Music do you listen to ?

I just heard a Martin Logan Aeon powered by a YBA setup and am Blown..heard some vocals by Sarah Brightman and Norah Jones....was really spooked

Cadence Electrostats really look interesting to me now !!!

Hi ARJ....

I listen to JAZZ, classical, Sinatra, Tonny bennet, instrumental lounge music like Paul Mauriat...I'm kinda stuck with my musical takes from the 1930's to the 1960's and early seventies. After that I happen to think all other music is cacophony.

Sarah Brightman...you must hear her singing all the andrew lloyd weber songs...she is good.

After the logans...hear the cadence.....you'll know why I'm so ga ga about them. I think they are sold in Singapore as well. logans have a long panel but its thicker and heavier to move back and forth. cadence panel is smaller becuase they have a super thin film in the electrostatic panel unit which lends to the delicacy if it all.

I am more of Rock/Jazz/classical guy...in that order..more music from th 80s & 90's and some from 70's and the 00's

In Jazz I Love any vocals or Pieces with double Bass or pianos...hence a preference for the Ray Brown trio, Thelonious Monk etc..

Cadence are pretty expensive here...anyway would prefer buying in india..But only once I can justify the cost...too expensive to upgrade for some time now

Was surprised to find that these are the only electrostats which can be driven by my 25 w Amp

I like the music by Andrew lloyd webber..have most of them with me...Although not too much of a fan of western vocals in classicals..Sarah Brightman is good !

Ray brown is my favourite bassist. No one like my Ray brown.
That guy is too good to be true. His stint with oscar peterson trio is legendary. BTW oscar peterson is my other favourite pianist.

Yeah cadence speakers can be driven with a small valve amp as well becuase of the electrostatic panel I told you about...its small and thin so easier to drive. All cadence speakers are essentially a two way design with the electrostatic panel serving as a tweeter and an ETON kevlar-nomex-kevlar sandwiich river as the mid/bass. Very smooth combo. Hearing them with a valve amp....is something man....valve sound with the delicacy of the electrostatic panel...yummm yummm...:-)

Hey I really dig ray brown too and his version of Blue Monk is really good

I do like Fusion as well...especially the ones with Western & Indian artists...Zakir Hussain/Phillip glass/L subramaniam et al ...

Am rediscovering Mussorgsky these days...even got the Picture at an exhibition by Emersen Lake & Palmer using more modern instruments...really good stuff.

Is there any need of any power conditioners in India ? I have a very basic distributor & RF filter.. but with the power fluctuations would that be enough ?

...And I can see you positively salivating on thinking of the speakers !!

power in india is bad...real bad.....its ok in bombay but step out of bombay and you've got all sorts of problems with voltage fluctuations, spikes, low voltage...pretty dirty power...with high end equipment I do recommend power conditioners. they are a must....sad part is good power conditioners are not freely available here so when you come here get you could probably get one for yourself.

Good Power conditioners are expensive...If I buy one will need to put of my DAC budget

Thanks for the tip...the good ones seem to be PS audio (Very exp), Exact power & Isotek..that means a min "Jhatka" of aroung USD 600

yeah....quite a big jhatka. But then again it may be necessary. I know of PS audio. I believe they are trying to enter india soon. Hope fully India being a price sensitive market they may not be too expensive. But then again you never know.

If not god power conditioners then you will need to run it off a voltage stabilizer with spike supression and a small extension boards with RF filter built in.

I Do have a decent Power distributer with RF filter/Spike Buster and a Circuit breaker.
Was wondering if a good servo controlled Voltage stabiliser would do the trick....would you have any Idea of the cost ?

thx

I've read a review of Ecosse loudspeaker cables in the german Steroplay mag, where they say that these cables sound rather warm and laid back, so they are ideal to tame a system that is a bit too bright.

The cables are also available directly from the UK manufacturer

Hi Manek, my guess is you may like the Eccosse to the QED.. my perception of QED speaker cables has been of being slightly bright especially in the budget category, but their I/C's and Digital cables are aparently good value for money .

Tell me what is a digital output from a preamp for. What kind of cables are these and what do they connect?
Manek

#20 erstellt: 02. Apr 2004, 08:32
digital outputs are for connecting to a digital sound processor if you have it extrernal to your components.

Its like using a CD player which does not have a digital processor to convert from digital to analogue, connects to a DAC.

In pre-amps digital outputs may be given to connect to a digital power amplifier...or any other external digital sound processor.

Digital output from a Preamp ???

Preamps only have analogue outputs...As confirmed by Manek, this is only present in CD players.
Basically any CD player can be divided into two parts
a) CD transport
b) DAC (Digital to Analogue processor)

The transport reads the bits in the CD and passes it to the DAC to convert to an analogue for the amp, to be passed on to the speaker.

Most CD players have a Digital out just in case you want to Bypass the cdp's own DAC to another one..usually this gives the best results as most entry level/medium cdp's do not have the best DAC and the best possible upgrade can be had by adding an external DAC.

My Wadia 302 CDP has its own preamp inbuilt into the player. And it has a port for digital output (fibre optic cable). I don`t know what this is for?
Arj

Oh..
In case of Wadia, the output is again not from the pre-Amp but from the CD transport. YOu would need to connect both a DAC as well as a Pre Amp to it if you want to use that option...but again only DAC's better than the built in Wadia one would be Zanden, Audiomeca etc !!! all of which are in the greater than USD6000 range

Again, what you see in the WSadia is not really a PreAmp, but a proprietary volume control logic which can help do without a Preamp and hence a direct connection to an Amp !

Only Krell& Musical Fidelity , other than Music Hall, i believe, have an Actual Preamp built into the CDP!

So basically unless you want to spend
USD200+ for a good Digital cable
USD 6000+ for a good DAC
USD 2000+ for a good Pre Amp
...you can leave that output alon !!!!!

Cheraz,

I heard a pair of forrests yesterday. Must say was really impressed with the midrange. Had a chat with the dealer..apparently it can sound very bright and tinny when new and needs to be well broken in

Also positioning with respect to sids and back Walls is very critical for these speakers as their Bass response is apparently very sensitive to placements...their user manual should be helpful initially..

just thought I'll pass on the same to you

My back wall is about 2-3 feet behind and the side wall is very far, about 15 feet away. That should be ok? Thanks anyways.

Oh yes..cheraz....
you will not suffer from side wall reflections and any speaker will exhibit its prowess in more than average open environments...

whats the listenng distance from the speaker to wherever you will sit and listen to music ? Anything over 10 feet should be fine depending on how much your speaker is toed-in for the sweet spot.

Cheraz,
Would recomend you go thru these...

1. http://www.audiophysic.de/info/aufstellung/e_index.html

2. http://www.cardas.com/insights/index.html

IMHO, better to keep distance between you and the speaker less than 2.5-3 meter for the clearest sound, assuming there is little room conditioning !
