Hi,

I have a old Philips CD Mini System with twin cassette deck, FM and CD player. The model name is FW 630. Its output rated at 600W PMPO. The loudspeaker model is LSB650.

It has terminals for 4 loudspeakers. Impedance of supplied loudspeaker is 6 ohm. If other front speakers are used, they should have same impedance. The speakers are 3 way bass reflex speakers with 5 1/4" woofer and mid treble is 2 1/2" tweeter. Upper treble is a piezo tweeter.

Its amplifier is rated at 2x45W RMS/ 6 ohm/ THD 10%. Signal to noise ratio is 67 dBA. Frequency response is 40 - 20000 Hz.

Now the issue....

I am not satisfied with the sound of the speakers. When something with heavy bass is played, the speakers start making metallic noise and there is too much distortion. Also, at high treble, the sound is not clear.

I have already bought the Sonodyne Cinque 5.1 HT package. But, the Philips System do not have a line out. I can connect the Philips to AV Receiver only using Headphone out.

I have decided to replace the speakers and keep the system intact (rather than selling it). For speakers I have chosen the Sonodyne bookshelves whose specifications are as below:

Description : Bookshelf Speaker
System : 2-way vented
Enclosure : 15mm MDF internally braced
Transducer Complements : 1 x 5¼“ Polypropylene Cone Midrange
1 x 1” Fabric Dome Tweeter
Nominal Impedance : 8 Ohm
Frequency Response (+3dB) : 45 Hz ~ 22 kHz
Sensitivity (1w/1m) : 88 dB
Continuous Power : 60 watt
Crossover Frequency : 1.5 kHz
Crossover Type : 4th order Linkwitz Riley
Grill : Heavy duty black knit stretched on a single MDF frame
Finish : Natural wood with high gloss top and bottom
Dimensions (hxwxd) mm : (312 x 200 x 215)
Net Weight : 5.3 Kg

Please suggest whether these speakers can be used with my Philips system.

Thanks.

2x45W RMS/ 6 ohm/ THD 10%.

I GUESS that in honest terms, that translates into 25 Watts per channel into 8 ohms.... just so that you can compare realistically....

600 Watts ... Whew ! I suspect it does not even draw that much power from the mains...

Now the issue....

Careful.... the dsitortion that you hear could as well be from Amplifier overload, though I suspect the entire system is throwing in the towel...

Try another pair of speakers from a friend, before you put good money after bad.

Time marches on and even Great Men Fade Away....

Technology and the market today offer good options, to hear good sound. Enjoy yourself and visit a few Hi Fi Outlets to see what is on offer now a days...

Cheers

Amp Nut, before even trying another pair of speakers I need to know whether the speakers will be damaged if used with my Philips system.

I have heard the Sonodyne bookshelves with their Stereo Amplifier, but not sure if that can be used in my system.

If other speakers cannot be used, then I have the option to replace the whole system. But then, I have to buy a separate Dual Cassette Deck (Onkyo is 18000, nothing else available in Kolkata), a Stereo Amplifier (maybe Sonodyne) and Sonodyne Bookshelves (Rs.8500), which is a costlier option.

most of the minicompos have speakers more or less designed for them.. and the limiting factor for sound include the amp itself as mentioned by amp_nut.

I would also be worried about the amp damaging itself as well whe you do try them on dont increase the volume cotrol too much even if the sepakers are not playing loud enough !

Hi Kausik,

Nah... the external speakers are most unlikely to be damaged when connected to your combo saystem.

Give it a try, and see if the Combo + New speaker played together give the desired results .... Sound volume and quality.

If they do, then they are fairly "Matched".

You can get plenty of slightly used cassette decks from makes like technics, pioneer, yamaha etc.. for 5k or less. Believe me, there are lots of them in the market. They will easily serve you for another 5 to six years. Paying 18k for an Onkyo deck is daylight robbery. Somebody selling that stuff for that kind of money at this age should be whipped. Norge amp and Norge bookshelf speakers will cost 7k each. Both better than the sonodyne stuff.
Go for something like this if you want decent sound. Good sound needs good synergy and each component will contribute for good or worse. Plonking a good speaker on an old Philips war-horse is the worse thing that you can do.

I problem is I stay at Kolkata where only Sonodyne has a proper outlet - a listening room, and Onkyo has a single dealer. There are grey market in areas like Chandney Chowk and Madan Street, and they have no knowledge of good brands like Norge or even other good Indian hi fi. My choices are limited. On the twin cassette deck, ProFX site lists denon at around Rs.18,500 (Model No DRW695). Anyway, there are no dealers in Kolkata. Even Sony Centre here does not keep the Sony Cassesste Decks. They only sell HTiB or the Combo systems. Sonodyne, Philips no longer makes cassette decks.

I have loads of cassettes and also do tape to tape dubbing. And cannot give up on cassettes and convert everything to MP3.

Cassette deck is the only reason I am not selling off my Philips system. And I don't want a non-branded local model available in places like Chandney Chowk.

Thought about that. But after hearing Sonodyne Cinque, I heard better sound than Philips. And the speakers are working, so minor repair will not improve the quality of sound that it is capable of. Hence, the decision to replace the speakers. The only reason to hold on to the main system is the twin cassette deck as the alternative separate from Onkyo costs more than I expected. I can go upto Rs.10000 for a twin cassette deck.

Hi Koushik,
Where are you man...You can get a Yamaha twin cassette player (without built-in amp) for 9k...brand new with papers and awesome results. Its the same player that Sonodyne uses in its Bangalore showroom to play cassettes while displaying its amps and speakers. You can even ask Sonodyne if they can get it for you...Dont go for anything beyond that.

That Sonodyne bookshelves you are considering are not so good..they are okay...if you like their sound then its cool.

I know that Sonodyne bookshelves are medium quality. But I can't expect better for Rs.8500. And I can't go for towers due to space constraint, else their Sonus 2605 is very good. Can you suggest any better bookshelves for below Rs.10k available with papers.

Kausik, check out the other Indian makes in the market - Space (music ranch), Torvin (audio planet) and Sanen (dunno if its available in Bangalore), you might find a good pair of bookshelves within your price range...

However, if you can stretch your budget to around 15K, then the range expands to include Wharfedale, Boston, Polk Audio and even Kef (I think)...

*edit*
Just read that you are from Kolkata not Bangalore...but you can find these brands there as well. I would suggest you to check out Sanen once.

Boston Acoustics has a good bookshelf model in 11k range and Wharfdale diamond 9.1 is again 12k.
You can get most of these at Kolkatta, but you have to do some more dealer search. Else contact the dealers here at Blore and ask about their counterparts in Kolkatta.

Wharfedale has a dealer at Dover Lane, Kolkata. I thought they were more expensive.

But, I have to make some provision for a dual cassette deck as well, since some postings suggests that pairing better speakers with my Philips combo could damage the speakers.

There are couple of specialist audio shops at Sarat Bose Road as well (near lake gardens), but at 10k mini compo with cassette deck is the only way to go. If not Philips/Sony look for other company, somebody must have a tape system.

Even I have so many tapes left behind at my home. I have upgraded many of them to CDs (I mean... bought CDs).
