hi friends,
I am a very serious audiophile but these days i much on move....so planning to go with a good mp3 player..
what about ipod with Sennheiser PCX 100 set?

any other brand which offers audiophile quality sound..

what about the sony Discman ? anybody auditioned it?

I love excellent highs so the stuff which you are going to recommend must give soft and crispier highs...

Please tell me your opinions...
cheers,
Sandeep

Now thats a Unique combination:D

I have felt that the ipod by itself is pretty neutral.. I think the PX100 is closed and PX200 open headphones (or is it the other way around) Popular opinion speaks that the PX200 is the more neutral of the two..

1. Try listning to the Existing earphones that come with the iPod. They are not too bad. You can get good quality if you rip your music at higher bit rates.

SOME models of the iRiver also offer GOOD quality.... debatibly better than the iPod... a more rounded sound, which you may Not prefer.

All iPods except the shuffle and probably the Nano, could give poor Low Freq response into low impedence Headphones. That is because most models use a coupling capacitor at the output, except the shuffle, which is direct coupled.

So listen to what you plan to use, before buying...

Must add, the iPod Click wheel is VERY instinctive and easy to use.

If you plan to have a large number of songs on your player, this interface alone should be a Major factor, in ease of use and quickly finding and playing songs from a large collection.

Save your money , buy a 60 Gb ipod with THE STANDARD EARPHONE and rip in apple lossless or >=256 kbps, I tried sennheiser Px100 but they give artificial bass and the vibration is IRRITATING, Sometimes when i hear a long time it gets ugly.
On the other habd the ipod earphones are VERY NEUTRAL..They sometimes reveal the room in which recording is made provided yu rip at a 256 kbps or higher. BTW i found apple lossless best .....anybosy agree? although 320 kbps is good i feel its a little grainy ,very less so but visible in very high quality recordings...

I totally agree with you, Sanathan.

I am Very happy with the ipod original Earphones.

( My other headphones are STAX )

The AIFF compression is GREAT, but the file sizes would not give me my entire collection even on my 60 GB video Ipod.

AIFF gives a 50% compression compared to the wav file.

I have kept some Great tracks in AIFF format on my ipod.

I am also very happy with 192 KBps mp-3, which I have standardised as my format, since it saves a LOT of space. Also mp-3 is a 'universal' format.. and convenient for me to burn CDs back from mp-3 for non critical listning.. ( my daughter's friends, and in car use )

problem is I cannot get those earphones to fit my ear.. they keep falling off.

I now do with a sony md71 in the ear phone.. its quite good .

I have recordings from 192 to UNcompressed depending on the original recording in the CD.
Usually nthe old hindi songs are in 192. most of Rock/jazz/classical in 320 and the " Audiophile " recordings in uncompressed..

I did not find too much of a difference for recording above 192 on the headphone, but nthe sound seems much more "wholesome" when i input the sound to my stereo via my DAC, 320 seems much more wholesome...

I had the same problem.

Put the black sponge that is offer with the ipod ( they include 2 pairs of black sponmges).

They do trim the HF, but the ear buds stay in place, even while excersing ...

Try Philips SHP-805 (just 1100 bucks), its the best thing I have heard in 2.5k range. Even the head-fi.com carries a lot of praises for this headphone.

Entry level Sennheisers are bullshit IMO...
