Dear Friends,
This is a very tricky issue which sometimes haunts me.What is the difference between a Pre Amp & a Amplifier & suppose if I have both how does it help me if I use both together.

Well to my knowledge a preamp is a dedicated phono amp which can be used for amplifiers which do not have a built in phono amp.Or else directly from preamp the speakers can be played.

But I have noticed a sizeable difference if I connect both amp and preamp along with my TT vis a vis only amp with TT.The gain in the sound goes up when both are connected. When recorded on the pc the sound waves are much more wider which is visible if you use a Sound Forge software.

My question is does it help if both amp and preamp is used.Just to get an increase in gain?Isn't it possible to record it using a single amp and then after recording the width of the sound wave graph can be increased to double. Will I get the same efect?

Can anyone please suggest.

(Power) Amplifier: The unit which "Amplifies" the signal with power and feeds it to the speakers.

Pre Amplifier: As the name suggests, this unit gets into action BEFORE it gets amplified. It contains the controls like volume, tone controls, inputs and their selectors etc... what you use for ur TT is a dedicated phono pre amp.

Integrated Amp: Both these units 'integrated' into a single casing.

Your TT will sound softer thru the line inputs since they are not equipped to handle the signals from a TT.

Yes, the Phono stage needs to provide a large amount of gain, to get the Cartridge signal to approx Line input level.

A second, possibly More Important and Critical function of the Phono stage is to boost the bass (depending on the frequency) by up 20 dB and cut the treble (depending on the frequency), by upto 20 dB.

This is called RIAA Equalisation.

Dude you pre wouldn't work without power and vice versa, it's like shampoo and hair.
