Hi.

I am a total new-bee just getting a feel for good music. Been doing some research on speakers.

Don't completely understand the terminology of 2 way and 3 way speakers.
What the hell is the specific difference? Could some one enlighten me? or give me a good link to read-up?

If I only want a 2 channel system do I need to go for 3-way speakers?

If I want a 5.1 (surround) HT can I still go for a 3-way ?

Please help!!

PS: I am more into music than movies.

hi,

Let me simplify things for ya in a couple of points.
A two way speaker is one which has two drivers which handle different sets of audio frequencies...for eg the large mid/bass driver will handle 3khz and below whilst the tweeter will handle 3khz and above.

A three way speaker is one which has three drivers which handle different sets of audio frequencies...for eg the large bass driver will handle 300hz and below whilst the midrange driver would handle frequencies between 300 hz to 3khz and tweeter will handle 3khz and above.

This is just the basics. 2 and 3 way speakers people use for stereo and HT.

It all depends on your music, your room and how you want your music reproduced.

Do remember that there are plenty 2-way systems better than 3-way systems and the other way round too.

Generally, it is found that 3 way systems offer lower bass but that may not necessarily be better bass.

I'm sure you still have some gazillion questions, so shoot !

Thanks!

Now for the next important question?

I have heard Onkyo HT systems(package). The systems do not sound very different from a Sony MHC-RV999D(Mini compo) that I own. So I am not for them.

I am in Bangalore and I have had a chance to listen to Sonodyne, Bose and Jamo speakers.

Now, the surprising part, I have heard some speakers made by some local guys here and they really are pretty good and seem to be good value for money. However I must confess I have not heard them for longer than 5 minutes at a time.

Any comments on this track? Is there any real reason other than reliability/durability that I should not consider locally made speakers.

by local guys ..do you mean corrson/acoustic portrait ? if so I have not heard them....I have only heard of them. I know they make speakers and kits out of vifa drivers. You must hear them for 30 minutes minimum to come to any conclusion with your own music.

Local products like cadence are a breed and class apart. Other Indian products dont stand a chance. Cadence licks all the foreign brands too in their price points according to me....so thats one local company which is amazing. They have a german designer called Walter Schmid who is one wiz guy.

It all depends why you want to buy, for what application, your room size and your kind of music, ofcourse not to forget your budget.

Looks like you are a Cadence fan

I meant local speakers assembled by free lancers here in Bangalore. They make speakers (Floor standers- 3way) for about 10k.

Where would I be able to listen to Candence in Bangalore?

I am yet to finalise on the budget 'cos the more I research the higher it seems to go if I have to go for branded systems.

Complete cadence fan .....I have yet to hear something better in their price various ranges. They have, to my ears, the best sounding products in their respective price ranges. Very seductive sound, not the boom and tizz you hear from other so called high end foreign brands.
Cadence has a showroom in bangalore or is in the process of finishing one. But they would not be costing 10k but much more...their entry level speakers cost in the region of 33k + taxes.

Dont know about local assemblers, I think you would do better to stick to known brands and outlets like cinebels, absolute phase, music ranch etc in bangalore. Unless one particular assembler is a known and reliable person who makes very good stuff.

If you are really keen on the assembling front, search the Web for DIY designs (Some excellent Proac response 2.5 info is available) and get an assembler to build it for you. should cost you only a fraction and you would have the choice of Veneers..

Try Adire Audio webite for some of their good designs..

cheers!

Never ever buy the local ones assembled with out brands .My colleague had a bitter experience of buying those big floor standers and bass drivers jarring after 3 months .The reason??? rebuilt woofer on the left channel and an absolutely local one on the right . beleive me there was so much of sound diffrence when installed at home. it so happens that the assembler plays it for half a minute at full beans and the buyer gets impressed . At least listen for 5 mins at constant output.local ones cost you a fraction as compared to good ones like Cadence or sonodyne and this should answer your question.as the money paid by you to good brands goes for the Research and good components they use.

DIY and Local assemblers are good if you buy from the right guys.Guys like the accoustic portrait are good examples. In bangalore they are the only guys I trust. But they don't come cheap. There are hundred other enthusiastic assemblers out there. Their intention might be good, but making a loudspeaker to sound right is not an easy job.So stay away.If you are tight with the budget, go the second hand route.

DIY is recommended when you have
1. Good designs (Eg the D38 clones)
2. Access to good dirvers and components.

It would be pretty silly to go for any DIY loudspeaker design as loudspeaker design is every bit a science and an Art ..You do get very good and well reviwed designs from the web..but it is up to you to find a relianble guy who can put it together. Usually the most difficult parts are procurement of the drivers/components and the cabinet.

Any good Carpentr can create the cabinet (To spec)..but putting the speaker together with regard to firmly fixing the drivers, the crossover etc etc is up to you or to any good DIYr...thats why it is Called DIY after all !!

and calling all DIY designs as not good enough and that brnaded is the way to go might be a bit childish..I have heard some wonderful DIY..especially Lowther drive based designs which could easily compete with the Branded ones around.
