Hi Guys
Have just come back from Viren's home where I had the pleasure of auditioning his, qoute "labour of love" products. And truly they are.
Let me start by saying that Viren is very focussed. He is clear that he will not mass market. He can currently produce just 2 complete systems in a month. Which means 2 amps and 2 pairs of speakers. He is motivated to provide the best sound for the most reasonable price(and the prices are truly reasonable)to the Indian audiophile who likes to listen to the emotional content of music. He is passionate about music as his collection of some hundreds of CDs and a few thousand LPs testify.
I had the opportunity of listening to the foll systems as these were what he had left with him:
1)Integre valve integrated amplifier 30+30 WRMSwith Sequel Reference speakers 2-way, 2 x 6-1/2” bass/mid, 1” tweeter teak veneer cabinet, floor standing.
2)Mini valve integrated amplifier 10+10 WRMS with Minuet speakers 2-way, 5” bass/mid, 1” tweeter, bookshelf
3)Integre integrated amplifier 50+50 WRMS with Sequel Ref speakers(above)
4)Phono preamplifier, MM or MC with Integre valve 30+30 amp with Sequel Ref speakers.
His source equipment was a NAD CD player and hold your breath a Linn Sondek LP12 turntable which has been with him for 20 years.
Suffice it to say thet the music sounded extremely warm, beautiful with superb seperation, soundstage and dynamic range on each system I heard. Of course with the smaller speakers there was a smaller soundstage with less bass but it did not take away any of the emotion from the music. The mids had the same quality.Even the solid stage amp was lovely sounding though perhaps not as musical as the valve options. Still beautiful nevertheless. The solid state looked like a Lavardin! Of course when he connected the Linn to the system it sounded more transparent, more balanced, more enticing even though I have not done much auditioning of vinyl for over 25 years! For bass lovers dont be fooled by the power rating figs or solid state v/s valve arguments... the bass was sufficient and more even with the 10 WRMS valve amp. Yes the solid state had more 'controlled' bass but the valves somehow put a nice bloom to the sound.
Well the good news for Bangalore audiophiles is that Viren has sold 2 systems to some lucky guys in Bangalore and he is confident that he will be able to arrange auditions soon. Pl send him PMs for details. Pl also ask him for his price list and be pleasantly surprised!
Thanks
Jeevan

Hi Jeeves,
What was the arm and cartridge on the LP 12 Viren's running. I think I must go to Delhi and listen to his phono pre-amp in the summer. Although I wonder if upgrading my phono stage will reallly help given that my speakers and tt are a modest pair.
Another question did you listen to the speakers that are not top of the line. How did they perform? I have noticed that the drivers of all his speakers barring the Minuet are the same. Its the cabinet configuration which is different. I wonder if some of the more experienced guys can subject the Lyrita speakers to a comparitive test. It would be nice to see how they stack up.

Hi Purnendu,
Re the tone arm/cartridge I cant answer that becuase I didnt ask. As regrds the phono-pre you will have to try it for yourself but if you have been using a SS I woundnt be surprised if you found the sound from the tube to be different.
As regards the speakers, yes, Viren said that the drivers are the same and its why the mids are tonally the same in the speakers I heard. He has spent a year with the driver manufacturer to get his specs incorporated. Again a comparative test would become subject to preferences of the guys testing and not what you like. So thats a subjective thing. However for me the combination of his high sensitivity speakers and tube amps was lush mids, great vocals, sufficient bass, clear treble with 'air' around the instruments. It was wonderful. And at that price....a lot of forum members can potentially leapfrog into high quality sound without having to experience poorer sound at the same cost.

Hi Purnendu,

The Linn Sondek LP12 I have is an older model, upgraded to the separate Lingo power supply. The arm is the Linn Ittok LV II, with the Linn Asaka cartridge. This turtable has been running flawlessly for 20 years, and is a superb example of good engineering. Excellent sound to boot!

I have tried to maintain a good, neutral sound with all my loudspeakers. Since all the bass/midrange drivers use a similar felted paper cone, sourced from the same manufacturer in Japan, the tonal quality of the sound is similar. As you go up in cabinet size, and to larger drivers, the bottom end fills up, lending warmth to the overall tonal range. The sensitivity also goes up with multiple drivers. Also, the simplicity and clarity of two-way systems appeals to me, and all my designs are two-way.

A trip to Delhi is definitely overdue!

Viren.

Hi,

In about a month's time, there will be two Lyrita Audio systems installed in Bangalore. I can arrange for personal auditions at that time.

I'll let you know when the valve-based systems are up and running.

Hi Hifinovice1

I am one of the lucky 2 who has Viren's system now installed right here in Bangalore. Got it on SUnday actually and setup and going. Give me a weeks time and I'd be ready to have anyone wanting to listen to it. A word of caution.... I don't have a audiophile quality CD player or a turntable (future acquisitions) but the difference from my existing system (Yamaha Amp & Energy speakers) is remarkable. The first night I listened to the system for 8 straight hours and gues what...no ear fatigue....

SO far so good with the new system. Will post more stuff later

Did any one get to audition speakers from Sonic_Sandeep. Helia has some products with real good specs and are very reasonably prices. You may be pleasently surprised by the preformance and VFM.

Sandeep, when are you planning to move to Bangalore.

Best Regards,
Rajesh.

Hi All

Sorry I couldn't reply individually to all you guys though I might have responded to some of you. OK the deal here is that I am waiting for a phono stage to arrive from Viren before I can connect my turntable...Hopefully that should be by end of this week (Fingers crossed).

All are welcome...I think I have left my numbers with some of you and since you all seem to know each other well...feel free to call me anytime and we can meet. Do bring your media (or a better CD player) and if any of you has LPs they wish to play..I welcome thee....

Cheers

Finally I got to hear Arijeet’s system. It was pleasure spending the Sunday evening with Arijeet.I second Jeeve’s opinion. The sound is very warm and natural devoid of any harshness or sharpness normally associated with digital audio. It is one of the best “value for money” system I heard . The valve amp gives all the power you need for the high sensitivity speakers. The macro and micro details are just awesome. The speakers paint a clean soundstage with all the details in the recording. Then he played some music on his new project turntable and I was blown. He played dire straits “dire straits” and miles davis “kind of blue”. I am used to most of the music on these albums and the sound from the TT was a revelation. Suddenly there was nothing between you and the music. It was feeling of “being there” with the musician…….. Unless you are a bass-nut wanting to drive your system to insane levels with heavy metal/techno, you owe it to yourself to give Viren’s equipment a listen…… Great work Viren !
