Does anyone on this forum have a subwoofer that has been built into the wall of the house? Many homes come with built in storage cabinets. Would it make sense to convert one of these into a powerful subwoofer. The rigidity of concrete is excellent. The only thing to be added is a baffle. Can any of you learned people (Ravi, Sachi, Junia, Manek, Mohan, Sandeep) tell me whether what I am saying makes sense. One constraint that comes to my mind is that the cabinet dimensions will be fixed. So drivers will have to be selected after doing the calculations rather than the other way around. |

Well, I dont have any experience in wall/cabinet based subs! Sounds like a good idea except that building it would be tough - matching driver characteristics with the fixed volume (although it should be possible to adjust the volume using sonically dead materials inside the cabinet), building a baffle that is as rigid as the concrete (to capitalize on concrete rigidity). In addition, room acoustics would also have to be tuned to this fixed placement. We lose all flexibility. Well the above obstacles could probably be sourmounted, but then comes WAF ![]() |

Ravi, Some of the obstacles can be overcome but others would be tougher nuts to crack: 1. Fixed cabinet volume shouldn't be an issue since the software should be able to work out a suitable driver. 2. Portability is impossible since the sub would be custom built. 3. Room placement would have to be considered very thoroughly since any change is impossible. But the advantages are great: 1. An invisible sub 2. Lower materials cost 3. Minimal resonance It sure would be a good challenge for DIY ![]() |

I doubt a in wall subwoofer wud have the same bass response as the usual ones, for example take a book shelf speaker(any make)place it on the floor and just listen to the bass it simply magnifies, probably because of the room acoustics but when the same book shelf speaker when placed on a stand the bass simply decreases(when compared to the placement on the foor) even wall mountable speakers have a decreased bass response when compared to their counter parts(assuming that the speakers are using the same mid/bass drivers) just my opinion |

well, an in wall may not be as good as a regular mainly from the point of view of placement. placement of a sub to get the best bass boost as well as ideal phase is a trail and error process. Cos like def tech,Triad, atlantic tech have pretty good in wall subs.not sure of their availability tho. for HT it actually might be good idea if you can find a good enough position... |

Hi Arjun, The positioning can't be optimized. That's a bug ![]() I'm surprised that commercial in-wall products are available! Because the size of the niche in the wall will be determined by the builder. I still feel that the bass will be good but the DIY guy will have to take the trouble to test the acoustics of the fixed location before building the sub. |
