Any old worldspace subscribers in this forum who feel like me?

I bought a Panasonic receiver, ergo 1999, @12k based on the claim of x chanels of CD quality free music ... blah... blah

Today we have receivers of equivalent quality available for 1.5 k onwards, and subscription for 1800 per year.

So a new customer buys a receiver for 1.5 k and gets a subscription for 1.8 k. Older suckers like us also pay 1.8 k per annum for our subscription. How's that for double jeopardy!! We have already paid a premium upfront for the "free CD quality music" when we bough our receivers at inflated prices. Here's a classical case of a US based comppany which whouldn't dare do this abroad, perpetrating a classic bait and switch fraud on us hapless Indians!!!

There are no free chanels anymore, so if you don't renew, you just have top throw your old receiver in the garbage can!!!

Roshan.

hi krish,

the stations are awesome. less talk more music unlike local fm. the best part is you can tune in genre wise so you dont have a rock track followed by some britney spears :cut. sound quality wise its decent. not cd quality but fair enough. asking for a home demo would be a good idea.

hi roshan,

i had worldspace back home since bout 4-5 years now (panasonic too!) and have got a new receiver here at the Rs 1999 offer price. dont think its bait policy. its just them trying to get people to try out worldspace. and the prices were higher initially cos the technology was new and manufacturers had to custom make receivers just for worldspace. now there are indian companies manufacturing models (bpl diva) and hence i guess the price has come down. i know it pinches but hey, everything's price comes down as time goes by no? as least those categories where the technology is new and they require scale of operations for costs to come down.

as for the free channels well there are so many companies that give you something free or discounted to sign u up and then later go back to the real price structure. at 150 a month i feel its real value for money.

Krish,

I think here in Mumbai 92.5 after 9 plays some really really good music also after 12 everynight theres a lot of quality stuff playing I would love to have a good tube tuner to listen to them.

The worldspace sound quality is NOWHERE near CD quality. FM is definitely better. Worldspace is MORE HYPE than music. If you're just interested in NUMBER OF CHANNELS, then worldspace is for you.

They compress the bandwidth so they can have MORE channels. Personally i'd prefer MORE QUALITY than NUMBER of channels.

What is music without quality?

I agree!.
The sound quality of worldspace is not at all impressive.
FM is far better.
I had made up my mind to buy a worldspace reciever because of the content, but sound is a big compromise especially when you pay 1800 bucks a year!

I heard that there are lot of digital radio stations that can be received with a DTH receiver. Does anyone have more information on this?

Check this out -
http://www.hifi-forum.net/viewthread-59-451-1.html

Another peeve that has surfaced recently is they suddenly tell me the subscription of 1200 I paid was a special offer and next year onwards I need to pay 1800. It was not mentioned that it was a special offer at the time of signing up!

bait no i dont think it is a bait it is just plain marketing in order to push their products(read as world space)
i have the hitachi world space reciever got it in 2001 i think world space is great since i live in rural area i dont recieve any fm channel and the music offered is simply uncomparable to any channel present i am a big fan rock and carnatic intrumental music just name one channel that gives u 24*7 music like them and lot more.
coming to sound quality it is not that good well even the DIGITAL AUDIO BROADCASTING (heard it when i was in uk) sounded the same.
sound quality wise it feels as though the treble has been considerably toned down and the bass predominates (connected this reciever to headphones, minicompos and my sonodyne set up sounded the same)-IMHO
any way i dont mind shelling out 1800 for 1 year subscription.

i think those who are hung up on sound quality and wont compromise, will not like worldspace.

those who appreciate the chance to listen to music they will never get to hear otherwise will dig worldspace. (cos there's so much played that isnt available locally in india).

If you're just interested in NUMBER OF CHANNELS, then worldspace is for you.

i beg to disagree XandY its not a question of number of channels. its a question of listening to stuff you'll never get to hear otherwise. and cant even buy at the local music shop.

to each his own set of compromises however

a great new year to all of you here!
