The Blind (Mis-) Leading the Blind

I feel Blind tests are valid if done the right way.
Random music samples of very less duration and immature listeners and bad quality switchers are all common problems in a blind test.
A valid test for amplifiers would be the following:

1.Keep the amplifier hidden. User does know which is being used. Volume control for both amps are standardized with a db meter to account for gain mis-match.
2.Use one for a couple of hours with all the music you want to test it with. Test with at least two standardized volume levels (normal and high). Listen to complete songs.
3.Switch the amps and do the same with the new amp.
An experienced listener will surely know which one he wants to live with.

Music selection is also very important. A norah jones song may not test an amplifier’s guts. “Stimela” by Hugh Masakela at concert level or the 1812 overture by Tchaikovsky would be more fit for such an exercise. For example, my old Nad amp used to shriek during the peaks. The Odyssey does a very decent job.

A random blind test with some 10 second pop music sample in a blind test may not show much difference to most people with both the amplifiers. It does not prove anything. I remember posting the results of a similar test (Gryphon vs aksa) a few weeks back in the stereo section. There wasn’t much response.
