Hi Guys.... I want to buy a good music setup for my son aged 15yrs. I don`t know much about car audio so could someone help me with this. Thanks.

Few fact first. My son listens mainly to house, trans and the like. But he also like rock. I have a Maruti Swift for which I need this for. My budget is about 40k. My son like big bass.

I was looking at the following setup. Please comment and suggest. One thing more, I would like to pick up stuff which is avaliable in the Indian market, unless really needed, mainly for the warranty and service.

Setup 1

kenwood headunit 6043U
JBL 644A Amp
Boston S60 Components
Boston S953 Ovals
JBL CS-1205 Sub

Setup 2

Pioneer 4190sd headunit
Polk 200.4 Amp
Polk db-6501 components
Polk db-691 ovals
Polk db-1240 sub

Waiting for some suggestions. Thanks.

Hello Cheraz,

I too am no expert on car audio, but I did spend an amount slightly more than your budget, for my Chevy Magnum, and am Very pleased with the results.

I am not familiar with the products listed, but have the following general suggestions ( which no doubt can be debated or even ridiculed )

I found the Pioneer Head units to offer excellent value in terms of price and features. However sound quality was mediocre.

I bought Alpine, which IMHO gives un-matched sound quality, though its poor on the features from. The Alpine Unit has relaxed, yet detailed & extended treble. A great foundation for true HiFi sound in the car. I think Alpine units are priced almost +30% on Pioneer, but to me the Alpine was my best decision.

Also, an external amp makes a good diff... as will decent sized speakers. How a larger speaker will be fit into a SWIFT, will probably be a challenge.

My speakers have a separate Tweeter, which is mounted in the Corners above the dash board. That way they are not firing below the front seat....

Hence a speaker system with a separate twiteer that can be remotely located is a good move ( IMHO )

I also saved money by retaining the 2 back door speakers, driving them with the Head unit... more for a sound fill, and mid bass augmentation. The amp 4 channel drives the Front 2 speakers and 2 channels bridged to drive the sub.

If you have the budget to add the time delay feature to your head unit, it miraculously projects the sound image from behind your head ( in the car ) to the Front, where the engine is located .... just above the bonnet. However, I would still put limited resourses in a bare bones Alpine than a full dincing full singing ( ??? ) Pioneer..

Just my 2 cents ...

Thanks Amp Nut & Arj. How have you been Arj.

Thanks Amp Nut about the suggestions.

1. I did think about Alpine but the base model starts at Rs.12,500, which was working out a little steep for my budget. But I will again give this a thought.

2. I am going in for an external 4 way Amp in the JBL or Polk. Any input on these brands and models I have mentioned in my earlier post.

3. I will be connecting the amp for my subwoofer and driving the components and ovals thru the head unit.

4. I`ll check out the delay feature you suggested.

Also I checked out team-bhp forum. Quite good. Thanks Arj. Also any suggestions on a good car audio fitter in Bangalore?

Even if you bridge the ampo to the Sub, you will use 2 of the 4.

2 will still be un-used.

IMHO, you MUST feed your component speakers with the 2 remaining outputs, and Not the head unit.

Also get damping material put on the doors, particularly the Front 2 doors.

Don`t you think powering the components thru the amp and ovals by the head unit will form an imbalance in the sound?

Also, I was planning to use the e2 wiring kit. What is your take on that? What type of damppening are you using for the doors?

Arj, audio wonderland has quite become audio nothing land nowadays. Finding it harder and harder to get time out. Does "Sprokets" also keep car audio equipments or are they only fitters. The location works out really good for me as my office is in Indiranagar.

I Know time is the most expensive component these days.
Sprocket has it all. for speakers I would recommend Hertz speakers..they are warmish and resolving. I put them on my scorpio but the ground noise level is so high in my vehicle that SQ becomes secondary .
i think ill just "Migrate" them to my wifes car..

Cheraz, I presume that by 'Component Speaker' you are refering to a SET of Low Freq + Tweeter speakers per channel ( Not just the tweeters .. ?

That is what I have been referring to....

The Component speaker set ( Presumably for the Front 2 Doors ) will ANYWAY sound different from the Oval speakers in the rear door.

Give the Component speakers the Best drive... thru the amplifier. Mount the tweeter separately on to of the dash board.

The rear door speakers need not be any thing great, since I suspect the rear seat will hardly ever be occupied. No need to spend of good sound there.

The rear seat speakers in my car are simply for re-inforcement. They DO have a different sound, which I use to add an overall sound fill only...

Question from germany: do you have a picture of the car?

Where are you going to install the rear speakers?

Usually, you don´t need any speakers in the rear...and please don´t buy a Subwoofer-tube - they are literally made out of cardboard...

The Front speakers are the most important component - so they have to be driven by the amplifier instead of the radio which will only put out approx. 15Watts per channel (no, not 50...) and the doors have to be damped with bitumen mats.

The car is the Suzuki Swift and is a small hachetback. I got your point regarding the dampening. I am going to mount the rear speakers on a tray behind the back seat.

Don´t do that...stereophonic music sounds better without rear speakers.

Spare the money for the rear speakers and invest it in the dampening of the doors.
