Hi!
I once heard that some cables may improve the sound.
So I told a buddy that I'd like to check his cables against mine (Just some cheap cables).
Result: He rated his cables miles better than mine. But I think mine are better (although he spend much money for his cables). Have we both been influenced by what we think about our own cables?

Hi,

first of all you are used to the sound of your stereo - and i would suppose you like it?

So maybe any change will be a kind of different, where you will tend to dislike a change...

On the other hand i think cables do affect the performance of hifi-equipment, but i know that there are many with an extraordinary Wow-effect, that soon turns into an unpleasant one, when you listen to your music for a longer time.

That might me a reason why you disliked his expensive ones.

Cables should be selected to help your equipment to sound more neutral or better - just how you like it - but an approach by the highest price won't help.

Besides what made you think you like your cables better then those of your friend?
Just more or less Bass or treble, more or less details, smeary or clear sound? there are many parameters you can use to describe the sound of a cable in your stereo environment so maybe some of them got worse, but some got better with the expensive one? What a kind of cable did your frined buy?

did you know which cable was playing while testing? if yes thats quite normal, see langhaarigerbombenleger's posting. if no that would be odd or you two have different opinions about good sound.

Hey!
That would be a very good "test":
A local voodoo priest wants to make you believe that his cable is better but you know which is playing. Of course you'd tell him his cable is worse than the other.

Sorry, could't stop myself writing this posting

Hey Langhaarigerbombenleger!

Can you define "Wow-effect" please?

Sure

You use a - maybe really good - old Cable - knowing the sound and maybe you like it as it is.

Then - you switch to this megalomania-Super Cable (i have a special manufacturer in mind, i think a european one) and instantly you have this: "Wow!!! Crisp heights - ultradeep Bass - my new cable!!!"

After a while - 'enjopying' the great new sound you switch back and have maybe this:
No male acapella bass voice sounds this deep.
No tenor sounds this sharp (you remember the extraordinary heights).
Where is my 3D Sound i had? Weren't there two voices in the middle, slightly before the bass which was slightly to the left behind? The maybe 'Super' Cable smears the former clear picture and gets points with overwhelming 'sound'.

An easy argument for selling: Almost everybody can feel more bass (so you might get many buyers), but it'
s hard to sell neutrality in sound 'cause it's a kind of boring, and a (nearly) perfect 3D Picture is just able to be sold to advanced (trained) listeners like musicians.

Thats what i would call 'WOW-effect'

Hello all!

That's an interesting issue! Cables prducing more bass (or filtering some of the rest) sound better than neutral cables when listening shortly. But when one buys them he'll be disappointed. So maybe that's the reason for people buying so many cables: At the dealer they think: wow! But back home the great cable turns into something unpleasant. So they go back to the dealer and buy another one. And so on until they have a good neutral cable.

Hi daviblub
Till now i just heard good things about siltech - maybe besides my hifi dealer, who sells customized cables which are - indeed - hard to beat by big names...
Besides i use them with bullets and found nothing affordable or better nothing with a better - just no - sound

Yes - it _is_ a long nick, but it helps friends to remember because it's so silly :o)

Hi long nickname ;)!

So you don't use any great-name cable but a customized cable by your local dealer?

Your nick: Does it have any sense or is it really senseless?

isn't it so that like the discussion about sounded speakers people do not want to listen closely to the sound ?

The first impression may not always be the best impression. For example .. speakers that are sounded may in first impression sound better than nutural sounding speakers , but after a while it gets you a pain in your head, wen listening hours and hours to a non natural sound.

what i think about the voodoo discussion about cables and speakers is that you are influenced (in first) but when listening more cloesly to the sound of a horn classical music of hayden (for example) you notice that the horns sound to pitchy to be made of copper and sound like the ones children play with in the toy shop!

my favorite music for testing is very complex, i always take 1 specialy prepaired home made compilation cd with test musik and with songs that i know tooooooo well how the should sound.

that is why my front speakers have lived up to 13 years now. i do not thin k that my jbl center lives to say that age!

as soon as i can get my hands on a decent center (preferably from the same ducth like nubert firm) as my front speakers i think that it just than is perfect!

Hello!
This is what everyone should do when testing new speakers: take a record you really know. Otherwise you won't be able to hear any difference (and if you don't have your home-system to compare directly it's even harder).

Sure, except that i have only long hair, no bombs.

Anyway it's kinda 70s quote tellin' (more or less) 'Long haired Bomblayers eat little children, too.' - Maybe they're right, but without bombs - no proof

I don't feel hungy right now

(Yo, A*freaker quite right)

no bombs? so you are some kind of long haired bomblayer who ran out of ammo? but dont you think all these explosions decreased your ability to hear differneces in hifi systems?

YES!!! I AM PLANNING TO BUILD UP A COMPLETE HIGH END PA!!! USING 5 CROWN MACROTECH 10000 AND A WHOLE BUNCH O' JBL 18" WOOFERS FOR A START!!! WE WILL SEE - CAUSE NOBODY CAN TELL THIS 'HEARING' WAHT COMES OUTTA THAT!!! MAYBE IT WILL BE OK THAT I RUN OUTTA AMOO, CAUSE IT WILL BE ENOUGH TO LISTEN TO THE SOUNDS OF BOMBS
MAYBE 180DB MINIMUM (RUNNING 'JUST' ON RMS POWER) WILL BE SUITABLE???

(whew - i even found a way to make a crescendo to shouting in big letters )
