I have a modest CD collection... about 200+ CDs.

The collection is large enough for me not to find a CD, unless its all arranged in some order.

I am looking for suggestions on how you guys have arranged your CDs and what has worked or not worked for you.

While an alphabetical sort seems to be the most obvious ( ? ) I have often come up against dilemmas like whether Patricia Barber should be arranged under P or B ? or Pink Floyd under P or F ?

Then should I stack Roger Waters ( Pink Floyd break away ) along with Pink Floyd ?

What about Sampler CDs, and those from international Hi Fi shows ?

Would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks

Genre-artist/band(first alphabet of the first name)

Pink floyd with be under P. Roger waters under R

Samplers under misc/sampler

That's how I would do it.

FWIW, I file using the last name. So, using your 2-3 examples: Pat Barber in B, Pink Floyd in F, Roger Waters in W (never mind that he's a break-away. He's a break-away so he's not part of Pink Floyd anymore). Same deal with Phil Collins & Genesis, Don Henley & Eagles, Lionel Richie & the Commodores, etc.

Hi,

it depends of the storage at all: in case you store the CD's on a ordinary shelf, just reserve rows for each genre as a rough breakdown. For instance, one row for Jazz, one or two for Classical, one for Rock/Pop etc. Then, for a better finding you have to look only in the designated row.

I've seen very tidy shelfs/rows even with stickers typical each genre.

Wes Montgomery (Jazz), Wolfgang A. Mozart (classical) and Warren Zevon (Rock/Pop) next to each other might not quite helpful.

Within the rows of course keep the alphabetical arrangement, as stated by Manek

Hi Ampnut,

Group them the way you findit easy to remember

I group them to genre, each artist arranged aphabetically within the group.

Pink floyd, Roger wateres and David gilmore are all within a subgroup.

Similarly Cliff Richard, The shadows and Ventures along with Rick Nelson and likes form another genre.

Hope that by now you know the logic of my POP grouping.

One and only person who can find a CD from my collection is me

Thanks for your replies, guys.

Bombaywalla, good to hear from you ! Long silence.. all OK ?

Manek, I am Pathetic at identifying Genre of the music. I tend to relate more closely with what Ani is doing and has suggested.

Ani, infact, I am doing pretty much Exactly the same as you are, but there are these Occasional glitches, and I just cant find what I want to hear, and dont want to hear anuthing else. Kinda up my listening mood

The worst is when one of my kids pulls out a CD and puts it back where they think it came from. All is well, untill maybe a couple of months later i want to listen to it..

Ofcourse the wife tidying up the room...

I am waiting for Bhagwan69 to poke me in the ribs and remind me that HDD playback permits finding All music, at the speed of thought ..

I am currently doing what Ani does, and am considering a shift to STRICTLY Alphabeticalon the 1st Name of the Artist, excluding A & The

eg The Doors would be filed under D

The pain is that it separates stuff like Pink Floyd and Roger waters, and ogften when I am listening to one, and see CDs from the other, it induces me to play the other ( same for Patricia Barber and Mary Black ).

Should I shift to a strict regime ?

By the Way, do you guys allow / encourage your family to use your stereo system ?

Is it out of bounds for the kids ?

I encourage my kids, but more often than not, the multiple power switches ( CD Player + Pre + 2 Power amps ) is too much for my daughter, while my son cant wait for the 60 seconds that my Valve Pre takes to start playing music.... Today's Instant Coffe generation...

Hi

My system is off limits to all but dad.

The women of the house think its too fidgety and waste of time and money.

Mom I know loves it but will use it thru dad :-)

I choose to put The Doors under T though....but over time the alphabetic notation has got confused but I still make sure that all the groupings for artists remain together eg I put Roger waters right there with Floyd and Rainbow with Deep purple etc..

I havie primarily grouped them under Rock, Pop, Western Classical, Indian Classical,Jazz, Audiophile+Vocal and World+Fusion.
...and my kides ar in an age where they prefer watching cartoons on TV than listen to music (Other than "Dhan Ta Daan" over and over and over in the car which drives me nuts )

This is exactly how I do it. Reserve a space for each genre. That way you know which space to look for even if you do not have an album in my mind but you just want to listen to some jazz .

After I changed my room & cd location the situation is a 'mess'
I just cannot find any music - not that I use CD's any more, but yes I have 'organised' them in some form.

Let me try and explain.

I have kept my music as per record label.
So all XRCD's in 1 place. All DMP in 1 place. All Decca in 1 place. All RR in 1 place. All Water Lilly is in 1 place. All Telarc is in 1 place. All Naim is in 1 place. All Channel Classics is in 1 place. etc. etc.

This is my 1st classification.

Then I have internal break ups.

All female vocal is together.
All male vocal is together.
All Samplers are together.

Jazz is in a seperate section. Arranged as per 1st name.

Classical too is broken up.
All symphonic pieces are in a seperate place.
All piano & chamer music is kept seperately.

All Indian Classical is in a different rack.

It is a 'pain'
I use to find music from the 5K CD's in my sleep. This was when it was in my older room & ever CD was labelled & classified.
Now, since I have moved to a 'computer' & have 2 TB of music - the problem has only gotten worse. Currently have shifted from Foobar to Media Monkey.
AN tom [if we meet] you can tell me what you like more - Foo or MM @ my place @ 1800 hours.

Family part - that I missed.

My audio is only for me.

I have 1 wife & 1 son.

Wife listens to more music than me. Only on her music phone or in her car.

Son is 9 & does not enjoy music - Play Station & Cartoon are a priority for him.

Now my set up is computer based & can be a 'pain' to get it started. Without a mouse / keyboard / screen etc. Besides, too many inputs & things to choose before you can get anything started.....

So on a sad note - audio in my place is only for me....
rather selfish - I know....

I arrange my CDs in alphabetical order by last name of the interpret, then by the date of release of the CD, when the interpret is a band the whole bandname is the last name. Samplers are under V because they are made by Various artists.

For me the problem with Genres ist that one musician can work in more than one Genre, and that some CDs cannot be ordered into one Genre so where to put them?.

When one Familymember uses a CD the cover is put back into the shelf, but not completely put in, so you see in one moment where to put back the CD from the player.

Yes Sir !
So correct you are...
I 100 % concur with your opinion.

Even when 2 or more audiophiles meet - there is only 1 hot seat for the music. So if 1 person is listening the others are just chillin..

Not just that... one sweet spot, a closed room, individual tastes, "my" CD collection...

But we digress. Apologies, amp_nut.

Hi Amp_Nut! Yes, it's been a while since I contributed at this forum. Yes, all is well - have been busy at work, busy with the children ever since we put them into Cub Scouts. There is some homework from Cub Scouts & weekly meetings. Since the boys are still Cubs we parents have to be present at all Cub Scout meetings & activities. So, it's one parent per child & that does take up some extra time. We also have to accompany them on all Cub Scout excursions. So, these days listening is very close to zero! The last time the system was fired up was New Year's eve, I think! Pathetic, no???
Additionally, no exciting topics on this forum for quite some time. Didn't feel like contributing to the "power cords" thread - too much written on it on other forums already & the topic tends to get argumentative (something I do not prefer).
There you have it in a nutshell.....

Thank you Everyone for contributing to this thread. It was very informative.

When I first started the thread, I thought I was the only one, with my personalised chaotic system of arranging my music collection, and therefore felt compelled to change to a more 'Organised' system.

Your posts show me, that just like listening to / appreciating a stereo set up, there are a plurality of views, with no strong rights or wrongs.

I think I am going to generally adhere to an alphabetical listing, based on the first name, with some exceptions of grouping together some of my favourites like Patricia Barber and Mary Black or Pink Floyd + Roger Waters + Gilmour.

Thanks for making me feel 'Normal' .. I guess that limited Chaos is not such a bad thing after all !
