Hi !

Now playing on my system is "Black Friday" - music by Indian Ocean. Amazing sound, music and orchestration. It's a wonderful blend of Rock with Indian folk.

This band of congenitally hard rockers have finally rediscovered themselves in a new avtar of music genre.

This album will delight the rock fans and the audiophiles (good recording).

Has anyone seen the movie? I would like to know how is the movie and how does the music score gels with the movie?

I saw the movie last night.
DO you have any idea what this movie is about? If yes, I'll tell you some more but if you do not then maybe you do not want me to spoil the suspense for you.

ANyway, I felt that the movie was more like a documentary of the true events it was based on with various people playing the roles. There was only 1 actor (Kay Kay Menon) that I actually recognized. All the others were no-names for me.
As far as the movie content is concerned, I did not like it at all.
The background music was...............well.........in the background! I did not notice it. At the end when the credits were scrolling, the music from Indian Ocean was far more noticable. I could hear what you described "a wonderful blend of Rock with Indian folk" or what I call Fusion music. It sounded reasonably good. (Fusion is not my type of music & I can listen to it for a while before I get bored of it. Personal taste).
However, now that I know what this music is associated with & the association brings back dark thoughts, I do not think that I'll ever want to hear this music again!

I had exactly the same view before I heard the music from the movie "Morning Raga" - and I was completely floored by the kind of "fusion" that's there. Therefore, I could approach "Black Friday" without my personal bias / prejudice.

I feel that "Black Friday" is worth listening to at least once on a HiFi gear - especially for the members of this forum - it is not mass market stuff.

Strongly Agree...

it is not mass market stuff.

One reason, I am afraid that this album may not sell as well as it deserves.
Its a large deviation from regular Bollywood stuff and that may keep it limited to fewer buyers...mostly Indian Ocean fans, People who liked the movie, Audiophiles who care for the recording....most others may not even care to listen them once because there is no Shahrukh (not our forum friend) or Amitabh in there.

Yeah Fusion is not everyboys favourite, some love it some hate it.

personally I do like fusion a lot..right from the "Shakti" and also the experimentations by Vishwamohan bhat , Ravi Shankar and Zakir hussain. Mahny of the India New Age music seems very much in the fusion genre. also found a lot of Fusion in Chinese and Japanese music.

Also I have heard "Kandisa" live ..I think their singer is pretty awesome and has a strong classical background. need to get tht album to hear it..

thanks for the Reccomendation Drsaab

The thing with fusion is this - it's magical when it all comes together, noise when it does not.

Which brings me to this album, This is not Fusion by Amit Chaudhuri, that I picked up on a whim from Crosswords.

Amit Chaudhuri is a U.K based novelist and literary critic who has also trained in Hindustani Classical Music. However like a lot of teenagers growing up in an Urban Indian City in the '70s, Amit's first brush with music was rock and Blues.infact he used to play guitar in a band in college

This album in some sense experiments with bringing together both those genres.F'rinstance the first song explores the similarity between that classic guitar riff in Layla and Raag Todi, then of course there are other nuggets like Summertime in Malkauns and freewheeling Jog.

Interesting and intelligent stuff.

Listen without prejudice, it's been released on Times Music

Its pretty nice..seems to be a fusion of jazz/Rock with indian classical as well as some Sufiana pieces.. I thought they integerated Rock very well with some of nthe Aalaaps especailly in track 3.

BlackFriday...
Yeah I did watch the band live at Mood I at Powai Mumbai..
Awesome act... Great band
Not every band has the guts to do what they can and have done.
Also when you see shit bands trying to do copy their style like Orange Street and Agnee...a few other have also joined the bandwagon...so called classical rock fusion...
Also Indian Ocean have done this when Indian Rock was not in much Spotlight...Bravo Indian Ocean to do this Fusion for 4 albums in a row without giving in to Music Labels.
Kandisa is great and I think that Black Friday joins the same league....
Watch the band Live.. you will be blown by their presence...Vocalist is great.

Strongly agree dr, bandeh from black friday is a very nice rendition.
When you talk of fusion, there is a band called OM which has done a one off album, I think this is again good - for people who like the fusion genre. It beautifully combines a lot of carnatic, folk and rock genres.

As for the movie, I agree with Bombaywalla, it is more like a documentary and not much of the music is infact heard. Having said that, it is a good watch and has been taken differently with good impact and no prejudices to my knowledge. I personally liked the ending of the movie, it does potray a full circle to the movie.

the recording is pretty nice too and carries the emotion thru very well.

I have come to really like this group..especially Kandisa having herd them live a couple of years back. the vocals are able to convey their energy very well.
