Just returned;
Got a few discs.

98 CD's [89]
2 SACD's [189]
4 DVD's [Karajan + Berliner - Beethoven + Bach + Mozart] - 189

All I picked up were 'imported' pressings - mostly western classical. Some NAD - Navras - Indian Classical, a few OST's etc. etc.

I found the sale to be 'genuine'
The staff is very ver nice - courteous & rather helpful.
All are 'young' & some were 'sweet' too !!

All in Mumbai should try and go - worth a visit.

This will first go to my office / warehouse.
Will have to be classified & numbered.
Later [after 9 months] will come back home - into my new 'listening room' where, when the chance comes, I shall listen to them.
There are 1K CD's already waiting in 'line' to be heard, that have not come home as yet, I do not have rack space to keep them, so they are still in the 'plastic' & cardboard box, waiting for their turn.....

With regards to classification - I mostly know where I have kept what. The positions are fixed & geners are well defined. Yet, I have about 5 to 7 'duplicate / multiple' copies - just happens sometimes.
More often, I go and purchase 'copies' of my 'referance' CD's. I need this for CD Player evaluation & also keep spares for CD's that 'go out of print' !!! Trust me, this is a very very big problem. The same album - pressed at different times sounds so 'different' !!!

Ah bhagwan

And I thought I was the looney one buying multiple copies of my fav cds/lps and stashing them in separate places.btw I have ventured to buy only 2 of a certain release.

Now there is someone who knows how precious a certain edition of a cd or lp is. My pals think I am absolutely loco :-)

Somehow I feel very liberated after reading this……………..
How can you possibility wait 9 months to listen to a cd which you bought ? I have once cut my fingers while trying to open the cellophane cover with a knife after I came home with a new cd. Now I have enough patience to do it slowly.

That is because he has already 1k CDs waiting to be listened to

And money to make this kind of investment in music!

My entire collection accumulated over past 4-5 years is less than 400 CDs but I believe there are many other important priorities in my life than music!

I feel myself fortunate to have resources to build a music system costing 150 K+ and accumulating music worth 100 K+ but not everybody is.

I am helping an orphan kid (through a NGO) for last two years. I take care of his school fees , books and clothing and also contribute for expenditure towards food and shelter.

Yes, I am buying a CD or two less per month (Rs 600~1000) but that helps an orphan kid to go to school. Smile on that kid's face and his soft 'Thank you' is the best ever DVD / CD I ever bought!

For me this kind of satisfaction is far more important than having couple of more (dust gathering) CDs in my rack.

Just my thoughts.

Excellent Suhas.
You are truly a 'noble' person.
I appreciate & respect persons such as your self.

Audio is a hobby;
However, what you are doing is truly great;
Needs to be acknowledged....

Well done - Sir !!

No No - there are more than that - un opened; Still in my office / warehouse.

I must be having more than 2 K cd's that I have not ever played @ home in the 'rack' [lot of them surely gather a lot of dust] !!!

Basically, every CD that is purchased by me, first gets classified & written on. Then it goes into a 'specific' place in my music rack. When ever I want to listen, I pull a cd out from there and listen to it.

The CD's I got from the 'sale' have already been packed and stored away. Will only be opened once my system moves to the 'next' room. My flat is going to be broken after 15 days & I shall be without music / audio for 6 months - very very sad....

Thanks Bhagwan but to be frank I am not doing anything great here. It is just an attempt to give back something to the society. And I am sure many of us are doing it some way or other.

There are many individuals and NGOs carrying out this as a mission on a much larger scale and are desperately in need of funds. They need our help.

If I buy one CD less per month I won’t die the next day, I still have 400+ CDs to enjoy but the same money can make someone’s life. CDs, Movies, Eating out, fashion accessories , parties, clothing, perfumes.... there are many things we can certainly cut down and put that money for some noble cause.

I am not suggesting here to give up everything and live like a begger, no way, it is your hard earned money and you have full right to enjoy it the way you want it.

But when I saw Bhagwan posting about buying CDs despite of having some 1000 odd un-opened CDs and on top of that others thought it is a topic, worth discussing , I felt that I need to share my thoughts with you all, nothing personal.

I have always said a few things - I will repeat it here - again;

A] Real Estate

B] Soft Ware

C] Hard Ware

D] Time [depends]

For me, this is the order of cost [hobby of audio related].

The room - where the audio has to be installed - is the most expensive [1]

The 'soft ware' i.e. CD's / Music is the 2nd most expensive component - 5 K CD's + & counting [2]

The hard ware - audio gear [cd player + pre amp + power amp + cables + speakers] 3rd most expensive component [3]

This is personal - 'Time' - I do have lots of it, so 2 to 3 hours a day is what I spend on audio - office listening excluded. 1 hour in the morning & 2 hours in the evening. Approx i.e.

This is how I’d list the order.

A] Real Estate

B] Hard Ware

C] Time

D] Soft Ware

I have some 300 CDS but Software is the least investment for me because I do not buy a cd unless it contains music I can enjoy. If it is such a CD, I listen to it often and at any point of time, I have some 5 cds which I am shuffling around and listening, so buying even two cds a month is more than sufficient. Anything more than that will result in a pile of unopened cds which is a total waste of money.

Suhas, you are a 'nice' person;
I love what you have done and continuing to do !

Very few persons will think on these lines. It is surely noble on your part.
I would love to be a part of this, but for me it needs to come from the 'heart' only then can I proceed with it.
None the less, you go on. All the Best !!!

Respected Sir,
If you only listen to music that 'you like' then how do you widen your 'horizen' ?
New gener's New artist's
How do you expose your self to new music etc. ?

We all have our 'favourite' & 'referance' CD's
Yes, they must be 25 & 10 respectively [for me at least], yet, unless I buy & listen, how will I know what I like ? Or better still 'grow to like' ???

i would actually agree with Bhagwan69. if possible i too would like to have a huge collection of CDs. I may not listen to all of them but it is more about a feeling of ownership thing and knowing i have it whenever i need it.

eg(although not to the same scale) i bought around 10 cds ofIndian classical music..i dont listen to much of it today but 5 years from know when i do want one it may not even be available !.

thats why i liked Avaxasphere (Thank Hercule) i would really like to build a S/w bank of lossless albums to the maximum I can !

Your's would be a prime reason to go that route with about 3 TB and another 3 for back up!
