not wanting to open a debate , but an interesting read In Stereophilewhich i though Ill share

the final conclusion of:

Ultimately, therefore, it is perhaps best to just accept that live music and recorded music are two different phenomena

seems very much what many folks are beginning to agree...and there is some aspect of live one would never get in a recording and some aspects of a recording you will never get in live.

Hi Arj,

Unless it were possible to recreate the live venue to the minutest detail in your listening room, live and recorded will never be the same. Not even taking about the miles of cabling, mics, power, recording equipment, etc. involved.

We can try and get as close to live or as intimate with the music as possible in our homes but it will never be the same. Sometimes your home may sound better than a crappy live venue!

true !. you can add weather also to this. apparently humidity and temperature affects sound waves and hence our hearing

..and most live shows talked about are "amplified"concerts which are anyway low on SQ but pretty high on adrenalin...which is another aspect of HiFi

indeed "live" & "recorded" can hardly be the same - once you take a sound wave & impinge it onto a microphone, you've immediately lost the "live" aspect of the music - the microphone is an electrical transducer w/ its own sonic characteristics. it's deficiencies rarely create a distortion that mimics human voice or an instrument because it's made of a material that's quite different. And, then there's headroom/compression of the recording equipment to mess things up further & the list continues....
As MSB1 wrote, you can only hope that the recording engineer knew what the heck he was doing at that live event....

Live : Recorded
is like
Ferrari : Fiat

Both start with an 'F'
Both have 4 wheels & 1 steering
[many more things are in common]

However, none drive like the other....

We @ home are all in the Fiat & 'believe' [At least some do - I think] that the Ferrari is 'slower' !!
[or may be the Fiat is more fun to drive....] !

I apologise to all 'audiophiles' !!

How I wish we could get a 'studio engineers' point of view on this topic.
Some day, the moderator should try and fix up a visit to a recording studio, so that all of us could get a 1st hand experience of how a 'recording' is done & what the 'priorities' of a recording engineer are & what all we [audiophiles] look for is actually present in the recording or is it just a 'frigmant' of our imagination...

The Pro Audio World & the Studio World is a very different 'world' & all 3 of us drink 'tea'
However one has it 'black' another has it with 'lemon'
& the 3rd with 'milk'
The water is the same / the tea leaf is the same - however the result & the taste is so very different....
