Hello,

I want to build some speakers from skratch, and i was wondering if its possible to combine a W3-871S and a tweeter?
I building the speakers for a 5.1 setup.
At first I wanted to make a clone of the Totem Arro, but the units are to expensive for a 5.1 setup. Anyone some sugestions for building it with cheaper units?
And I will be needing some help with the filter 2.

Hello Acqua

Shure it is possible, but I think would be more neceassery to combine the W3 with a bass than with a tweeter.

A Cheaper unit than the W3 is the Visaton FRS8(M), a "better" one would be the Omnes Audio BB3.01

If you're looking for a really small 2-Way speaker, have a look at Uibels "F.A.T.T.".

Do you have a link to the Totem?

Here's the link to the clArro
http://www3.sympatic...r/totemarroclone.htm

I've looked to the F.A.T.T. but it's to wide,I like the narrow design of the Arro and I want to keep it like that if possible.

Ok I see, but the W3 won't be a proper substitute for a 4,5" peerless woofer. I expect even the W4 from the Fatt isn't. Are you interested in the design or in the sound of these speakers?

You could talk to Uibel himself. I expect making the Fatts baffle more narrow wouldn't be that problem.

Otherwise, I would highly recommend to choose a proper woofer. I don't know anything about the TBs you linked, but I don't trust the manufactures frequency responce graphics. They are titled as Subwoofers and I doubt that you will make them work proper with a payable dome tweeter. The Peerless used in the clone you linked will be hard to replace, 'cause it's cheap and really good. Why don't you take it?

Or did I misunterstand you, and you want to build a satellite with the W3 and a tweeter plus a woofer with the TBs?
In this case, you should also have a close look to the Aurasound NS4, witch is first adress for miniature subwoofers because of it's ultra long throw motor.

It's datasheet is a good example why I don't trust the grpahes: In the manufactures sheet (even the distortion is printed, hail!), the NS4 looks like a wide range midbass, useable up to, I would say, 4kHz.
The measurements of "Klang und Ton" (a speaker magazine, know it?) say, that there is a 5dB breakdwon at about 1kHz, with makes the NS4 useable only up to 700Hz. Therefore, it may be a good partner for a 2 or 3" fullrange, but not for a tweeter.
Get what I mean? I expect, the TBs could have the same problem.

By the way, you do have measument equipment, don't you? Otherwise it will be hard to develop a box that is worth it's money. In this case, you should really think about a Fatt re-desgin.

May I ask where you are from?

And please excuse my english, I hardly exercise and the english threats in this forum are rare. If there's something, you might not understand - just ask.

What am I talking abput a Fatt re-design?

Uibel transferred his fatt-concept to cyburgs "Stick", because they use the same midbass. In the original Stick, it's used as fullrange. So Uibel (or whoever) just added the tweeter and the crossover. It almost looks like the Totem.

I'm from Belgium.

I'm interested in the design of the Totem Arro. I also know that the sound of the FATT isnt the same as the Arro.

What should I do:
Make the FATT in a floorstanding model?
or search other/cheaper units for the clone?

Is the FATT or Stick any good for a 5.1 system?

Hi,

the transfer of the crossover network failed because of internal resonances in the stick-enclosure.

Make the FATT in a floorstanding model?

The best idea!

No sound will be the same as the arrows if you chance the drivers.

Anyway, the W3 wouldn't sound like the arrows as well.

The Stick (had a look at the threat?) is already a floorstanding model and very slim. There is a version with the fatt's tweeter and crossover, so nothing needs to be changed.

The components are much cheaper than the Arrow's, I think 30€ for the midbass and 10 oder 11 for the tweeter.

The are of course not as good as the peerless units, but excellent for their price.

If you're looking for better drivers with the same price like the peerless', I expect you won't find any.

Of cource there are some (very few) better components, but they cost much more.

The Stick is a double bass reflex system, which makes the W4 going rather deep. So it doesn't need a sub for music at low preasure levels. If you combine it with a subwoofer, as you do in 5.1, it should play even loud.

So it's your choice, what you want, what you are able to do and what you want to pay.

Edit: Oh sorry i just saw what Murray wrote.

Hey Acqua,

another way to change...

ACQUA schrieb:
...the FATT in a floorstanding model

can be found here! Or something that reminds me pretty much of the FATT.
No construction set, they're selling finished speakers, but looking at this picture,
i'd say they are using the W4-655 A (Uibel is using the SA-type)

don't know if the crossover needs to be changed, maybe Uibel can say something
to this point. The tweeter reminds me of the NoFerro 12, but i'd stick to Uibel's
already developed and published FATT with the monacor tweeter. There's
another pic with a cross-section of the enclosure,

maybe you can take this as an inspiration for the enclosure-design..? On the
crafty-technical-site there are some remarks to the enclosure-design for the
woofer, maybe you can read dutch? There are some guys here, who know how
to handle AJ-horn, maybe they can help designing a TML-enclosure? Some facts
are given, the outer-dimensions, placing the driver at 1/3 of the line, an internal
helmholtz absorber at the beginning of the line, line-opening at the bottom.
Starting with that you could build several cheap chipboard-enclosures and
listen to the differences, or start measuring, if you have the possibilities.

enjoy, and keep us updated!
