Late Night Guitar

Earl Klugh

Label: Blue Note

Earl Klugh's masterpiece!

Earl's playing is so melodic and filled with so much emotion, you're completely taken in by his artistry. From first song to last, you're hooked. The flow of this CD is simply beautiful.

This is the perfect setting for acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh, playing strong melodies (including such standards as "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," "Laura," "Mona Lisa" and "Two for the Road") while joined by strings and several horns in an orchestra arranged and conducted by Dave Mathews. As usual for a Klugh session, the guitarist sticks mostly to the themes and does not improvise much, as he never considered himself a jazz player; but the overall effect is quite pleasing.

The Very Best of Laura Lee

Laura Lee

Label: Impulse (Chess)

Long overdue single disc compilation by this salty, sassy and soulful vocalist who recorded for the labels Hot Wax, Chess and Invictus in the early '70s. She may not have become a household name, but Soul and R&B collectors have known about this 'best kept secret' for decades. 15 tracks including 'It Ain't What You Do (But How You Do It)', 'Dirty Man', 'It's All Wrong But It's All Right', 'Are You Doing Me Wrong', 'Need To Belong' and more.

Lee's voice is deep, gritty and full of gospel emotion. It comes from years of hard gospel singing and living. She hasn’t been forgotten and still deserves to be heard. don’t miss this one.

Renata Tebaldi: Christmas Festival

Renata Tebaldi

Label: DECCA

Decca has been perusing the vaults and re-releasing some classic recordings. Renata Tebaldi's CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL is one such recording. Originally released in 1971, it is a wonderful example of Tebaldi's artistry. While her voice is somewhat darker in this recording than in some of her earlier recordings, the arrangers seemed to know how to highlight Tebaldi's vocal majesty in tracks that suit her voice.

It is a standard operatic Christmas recording-traditional Christmas carols and some religious songs that are not necessarily Christmas pieces, but fit the mood of the holiday season rather well. Tebaldi sings reach track with ease. In some tracks we find the glory and artistry that is trademark Tebaldi, particularly when she sings "O Holy Night." We have renditions of both versions of "Ave Maria" (Gounod and Schubert). The Gounod is very well done. "Panis Angelicus" is heavenly. Her rendition of "O Divine Redeemer" reminds me of her Desdemona of OTELLO (the Karajan version with Mario Del Monaco in the title role) when she sings the "Willow Song" and then moves into the Hail Mary. To me, this is one of Tebaldi's greatest recorded moments. While the music differs, she performs "O Divine Redeemer" with the same intensity and feeling as her Desdemona. An added bonus is her English diction.

Tebaldi, who carefully sings each English word. It is perhaps attention to detail that makes this recording outstanding.

This recording is truly a classic and fortunately its re-release ensures it will be a favorite for years to come.

The Montreux Collection [LIVE]

Artist:

Count Basie, Louis Bellson, Keter Betts, Benny Carter, Booby Durham, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Pass, Milt Jackson, Oscar Peterson, Zoot Sims

Label: Pablo

This has something for most people. Its a recording of the Montreux Jazz festival from August 1975 and features a cast of Jazz greats.

Kicking off with a solo Piano version of Ray Bryant's 'Cubano Chant'. Oscar Peterson gives a typically exhilarating performance.

Track two is 'Sunday' and features Benny Carter, Roy Eldridge, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Tommy Flanagan and Joe Pass! Needless to say this swings along with all the musicians contributing noteable solos.

Count Basie appears on track 3 'Collection Blues'. This starts as a trio only and by the end of his opening solo Basie has the crowd clapping along.

And so it goes on... track after track featuring great musicians. Other musicians who I haven't mentioned are Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis, Milt Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald.

This is well worth getting.

Ramsey Lewis's Finest Hour

Ramsey Lewis

Label: Verve

In the mid-1960s, pianist Ramsey Lewis enjoyed phenomenal pop success with his crossover jazz recordings of "The In Crowd," "Hang On, Sloopy," and other songs, which were usually recorded before audiences. This CD charts Lewis's career from 1956, the year his trio with bassist Eldee Young and drummer Redd Holt first recorded. While Gerry Mulligan's "Limelight" is straightforward modern jazz, the CD also finds the group emphasizing church roots and Holt's backbeat and stretching outside the jazz world for instantly familiar tunes, whether from Bizet's Carmen, traditional gospel, or folk songs, like "Little Liza Jane." Pop success came when the group released their live version of the R&B tune "Something You Got," with the song reduced to its funkiest fundamentals and an enthusiastic crowd clapping, talking, and singing along. The final five tracks come from the pianist's 1967 studio session with a horn section added, shifting the formula slightly but getting the same infectious results.

This CD "transports" you to several of the clubs that this virtuoso performed at. It kicks of with a wonderful rendition of "In Crowd" which sweeps you into the remainder of the play list. THERE IS NO ESCAPE, and if there were...who would want to leave! You can imagine yourself leaning back against the bar as the first strains of "Hang On Sloopy" waft through the joint. The patrons get caught up in Lewis' style and so will you.
I invite you to try this CD. You will NOT be disappointed!

Elv1s 30 #1 Hits [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]

Elvis Presley

Label: SONY_BMG

In 1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the sensational "A Little Less Conversation" remix that brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica star)? Well, the '87 compilation featured only Billboard number ones. "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love" never reached the top there, nor did "Way Down," despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of the Atlantic following Presley's 1977 death. Instead, the new compilers have used the major pop charts in both the U.S. (including Cashbox) and U.K. to determine inclusions. The tracks have all been remixed from original masters, which proves awesome at best (some of the songs have never sounded crisper if, at times, slightly antiseptic) and problematic at worst. Purists will definitely quibble. "A Fool Such As I," for instance, sounds like Elvis rerecorded his vocals. Hank Garland's great guitar solo also sounds different. It might be an alternate take. That's definitely the case with "The Wonder of You." A few lyrics are even different, meaning this isn't the same version as the original 45. Of course, none of that should matter to the youngsters who've been singing along to "Hound Dog" on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, or to any other newcomers. Despite the complaints, this is arguably the best single disc Elvis primer to date. Real fans will want to explore much deeper for treasures to be found, but albums like this guarantee that this is one king who will deservedly live very long, if not forever. --Bill Holdship

This is just brilliant music from the greatest recording artist of all time. The improved sound quality on these songs is incredible, so even if you already have every ELV1S album every released this is still worth buying. If you have never bought an ELV1S album then this is where to start. This album will appeal to anybody who is open to listening to good music. You will never get better value than this.

House Party [ORIGINAL RECORDING REISSUED] [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]

Jimmy Smith

Label: Blue Note

House Party comes from the same sessions that produced Smith's better-known The Sermon. The 1957 and '58 studio dates included both his working rhythm section of guitarist Eddie McFadden and drummer Donald Bailey and the guest pairing of Kenny Burrell and Art Blakey, as well as a coterie of horn players. While The Sermon emphasizes Smith's funkier side, House Party demonstrates his ability to play dyed-in-the-wool bop on a Hammond organ. The music really springs to life on the two long takes of Charlie Parker tunes, "Au Privave" and the previously unissued "Confirmation." Blakey's presence on these adds an immediate spark, and Smith serves up a heady mix of powerful riffs and bubbling, blistering lines that erupt from the organ. The animation spreads to an excellent frontline with trumpeter Lee Morgan and saxophonists Lou Donaldson and Tina Brooks. The rest of the CD is good period fare, with fine work from Morgan, Burrell, McFadden, and Smith but without the same sense of excitement. --Stuart Broomer

Jimmy Smith is at his best on these recordings, and with Blakey, Lee Morgan, Kenny Burrell, and others in the studio with him, he's absolutely unstoppable. You will be hard-pressed to find an album that is so infectiously swinging. In particular, the 15-minute "Au Privave" is a wonderful example of the dynamic and playful interaction taking place on this album (although the songs were recorded at separate sessions, with different personell).
While every track is wonderful, the album is stacked to the front, so that "Au Privave" (Track 1) is vastly superior to its Bird-penned bop cousin, "Confirmation" (Track 5). However, have no fear--all the tracks in between are nothing but quality jazz.
If you're only going to pick up one Smith album to try things out, I would recommend this over "The Sermon", the more popular alternative from the same years. "House Party" is more consistently spectacular. "Back at the Chicken Shack" from a few years down the road is also a great way to start.

Round Midnight

Oscar Peterson

Label: Verve

This has become possibly my favorite CD, at least for now, maybe edging out Joe Pass-- and you have to be damned good to do that for me. Oscar Peterson's control of the piano is one of the most exquisite I've ever heard. In his runs, even though they're at least as rapid as any I've heard from classical pianists-- Mr. Peterson did have classical training for a while until his teacher wisely suggested that he move to playing jazz-- you can hear every single note clean and clear, which I don't always hear elsewhere. Someone mentioned his performance on "Just a Gigolo." This song is full of contrast, and a simple song becomes an exhibition of the universe of human emotion. There are waves of exuberant playing suddenly followed by soft, reflective playing, and it all seems logical. "Laura" is also an example of fine, imaginative piano playing. In the tracks where Mr. Peterson is playing with his trio, the transitions between the solos are some of the smoothest I've ever heard. His trios have a wonderful sense of balance and follow each other perfectly dynamically, knowing how to highlight the soloist to best effect. Unlike so many I've heard who use beautiful music to make jazz, Oscar Peterson is one of the few who use jazz to make beautiful music. I emphatically recommend this CD to those who are studying to play jazz and want to hear some exquisite stuff to learn from; and to those who want to have pleasure from an album of beautiful music to "unwind" to.

Sonny Rollins – Blue Note 1958 Vol – 2
Sonny Rollins

Label – Blue Note

This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.

Sonny Rollins' VOLUME 2 for Blue Note is one of those timeless discs. It is a milestone in jazz history that gathered together some of the founding fathers of the post-bop era. Joining Rollins are Jazz Messengers Art Blakey (drums) and Horace Silver (piano), Miles Davis' favorite bassist Paul Chambers, the quintessential trombonist J. J. Johnson and even Thelonious Monk himself. This is a swinging tour-de-force that begins with a bang and doesn't let up until the last note has faded away.

Sonny's own up-tempo "Why Don't I" kicks off the session with a rhythmic jolt before Rollins' big tenor launches into a classic swinging solo followed by turns by Johnson, Silver and some heated exchanges with Blakey. The aptly titled "Wail March" deceptively begins with a street beat groove before careening into several blistering solo choruses. Monk sits in for his own "Misterioso" and "Reflections," two quintessential works from this eccentric master that are given excellent readings here. The bouncing "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" provides some tasty interaction between Rollins and Johnson. Finally, the lilting "Poor Butterfly" is a nice bluesy ending to this all-star session.

Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder.

J.J.Johnson,Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk,Paul Chambers

Recorded at Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 14, 1957. Includes liner notes by Robert Levin.

Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); J.J. Johnson (trombone); Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Blakey (drums).

Groove Elation

John Scofield

Label: Blue Note

The guitar/organ combo has made quite a comeback during the 1990's with the emergence of MMW and Joey deFrancisco, and old stalwarts like John McLaughlin jumping on the bandwagon. But leave it to John Scofield to make records, "Hand Jive" (1994) and this one from 1995, that breaks all the rules of the genre.

Scofield's has put together a fantastic group of musicians and tunes for this rhythmic workout. This album simply does not have a low point or weak track. Most tracks feature a nice, accessible funky groove, hence the title. Sco does slow it down for a few tunes to feature his acoustic guitar, with pleasing results. The horns and organ contribute heavily on several tunes, although there is still room for Sco to stretch out with some great solos on most tracks.

All of the songs on this album are keepers, and were written by Scofield. Each song is inherently different, and provides a great listening experience. From his soft tones in "Soft Shoe" to the opening groove in "Lazy", Scofield writes and plays beautifully. Scofield also brings horns into the mix with songs like "Bigtop", "Lazy", and "Kool".
This is a fun album to listen to as the band interacts as one. Each member builds off of the other. Even though the soloist stands out, you can still hear each individual member as if they were playing alone. Very rarely do you hear such talent mix so well that one is not playing on top of another. If you're into jazz, admire great musicians, and like music that has something to say, look no further.
