Classic Yo-Yo

Yo-Yo Ma

Label: SONY Classical

Except for one "previously unreleased" recording and two new ones, this is a compilation of segments taken from older Yo-Yo Ma CDs, perhaps to whet listeners' appetite to hear the entire records. The disc represents a triumph of performance over material. The program consists of short pieces and single movements of long ones and serves to display Yo-Yo Ma's extraordinary versatility, his spectacular instrumental and musical gifts, and his remarkable ability to invest everything he plays with the same commitment and emotional concentration. There is no logic to the sequence, except that it begins and ends with solo cello. Bach, whom Ma plays tuned normally when unaccompanied and tuned low with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, may justify the CD's title but seems out of place. Moreover, juxtaposing him with O'Connor and Piazzolla is jarring, though the Tangos are beautiful. The transcription of Dvorák's lovely E-minor Slavonic Dance, despite the participation of violinist Itzhak Perlman and his golden tone, sounds like a movie soundtrack: all bravura and cheap effects. The playing's the thing, and it is stunning, not only Yo-Yo Ma's, but that of all his collaborators, from vocalists Bobby McFerrin and Alison Krauss to pianist Emanuel Ax, Ma's duo partner of 25 years. Ax joins Ma for the Finale of Brahms's second cello sonata; that is what you may find yourself humming at the end. --Edith Eisler

The Legendary Okeh and Epic Recordings [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]

Ahmad Jamal

Label:EPIC/ Legacy

This cd represents all the recordings of Ahmad Jamal, Israel Crosby, Eddie Calhoun and Ray crawford originally released on Epic Records between 1951 and 1955. This is a top quality production from Legacy recordings who produced the POINCIANA cd which had about half the Epic tunes included here. There are liner notes by Nat Hentoff as well as Randy Weston. Also there are nice photos of a young Jamal as well as of the aforementioned musicians (nice to see pics of them). The cd label is also a reproduction of the old yellow Epic LP label.

This cd is absolutely essential for Jamal fans and comes highly recommended to anyone else interested in leading edge jazz piano. There is simply no one else like him. Jamal and crew are very easy and interesting to listen too. And Jamal one of the premiere influences in jazz history. He never strays far from the mid range of emotional expression but where he excells is his inventiveness, superb sense of time, swing and marvelous group interplay. And Crosby, Calhoun and Crawford are the type of truly outstanding musicians to make this interplay possible.

Every tune is outstanding and choosing a favorite is really hard. There is everything from up tempo romps like SURRY and BILLY BOY to Rhumbas like RICO PULPA and ballads OLD DEVIL MOON but I've always loved IT'S EASY TO REMEMBER.

Live at the Whitney [LIVE]

Duke Ellington

Label: Impulse

This album is a real treat for jazz fans and especially those who have an affinity for the music of Duke Ellington. This CD captures Duke a year or so before his death, performing as part of a trio at New York City's Whitney Museum of American Art in April, 1972. I think this album is to be cherished because, even among Ellington's huge discography, it is rare to find him playing in a trio setting. (His album "Money Jungle," featuring Max Roach and Charles Mingus, is another one). Of course, Ellington's many big band albums are excellent, but it is really nice to hear him in a more intimate group, where his piano playing is not drowned out by the other instruments.
Even at the age of 70-something, Duke's piano playing is still superb. The disc features several of the most well-known standards from the Ellington catalog, and since he never played his songs the same way twice, if you're like me, you will enjoy hearing them, even if you know the music by heart and have heard other versions before. I enjoy live recordings for their sense of presence and the vibe that comes from the connection between artist and spectator, and the audience here is enthusiastic but never overbearing in their participation. They do sing along a little to "I'm Beginning to See the Light," but it's all in good fun and enjoyable to listen to. It's also great to hear Ellington speaking to the audience and being as charming and as genuinely friendly as always. He was a class artist in every sense, and this album really shows it.

In Paris: Barclay Sessions 1955-1956

Chet Baker

Label: Universal (France)

This is an astounding recording!
With sound remastered as if it were recorded in the year 2001 instead of in 1956, Chet Baker and various other stellar performers made supremely beautiful music for the Barclay label. The fourteen songs collected on this CD are the best of the best. Written by the likes of the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, Dietz & Schwartz and others, this is a gorgeous recording--- very accessible, breathtakingly beautiful music, late night-sounding, sexy stuff with Chet Baker and his pals: jazz performers nonpareil. (including genius-pianist Dick Twardzik who died tragically after the first two recording sessions).
Baker's trumpet playing is nothing less than perfect and his one vocal on the final number, "Everything Happens To Me" is sweet and sad.
The packaging is beautiful: the liner notes are short, but informative and there are several terrific, sepia toned photographs from the Paris sessions and concerts. Highly Recommended.

(Dexter Gordon) Generation

Dexter Gordon

Label: Prestige

Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet, flugelhorn); Cedar Walton (piano); Buster Williams (bass); Billy Higgins (drums).

The quintet, featuring the great trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, swings effortlessly (for example, on the graceful take of Andre Previn's "Scared To Be Alone" which showcases a clarion Hubbard solo). Gordon's playing reveals both how much his influence went on to effect later tenor masters like Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, and how little of his effortless technique had been lost since his '50s heyday.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on July 22, 1972.

This cd, although not one of LTD's most known recordings is indeed some fine original songs done with finese and taste! Dexter is in fine form as he is accompanied by a great cast of musicians, not a cd to leave out if you are a jazz lover!! and Dex fan

Good Pickin's [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]
Howard Roberts

Label: Verve

"Good Pickin's" is the best album by jazz guitar legend Howard Roberts, the best all around guitarist that ever lived.

Playing with the name of another important album from Howard Roberts (HR is a dirty guitar player) I ended coming up with the title for this review. This to testify the great talent of Howard Roberts which at the time of this recording (59) was a very clean and smart Jazz guitarist. You can't go wrong with this album. Howard was a bop kind of musician. Here he was accompanied by an all star west coast band. Red Mitchell and Stan Levy formed the rhythm duo, and sorry if it's not enough (!!!) Bill Holman was one of the two arrangers (the other was Marty Paich, the father of David Paich the keyboard player for the band Toto) and he played the tenor too here. The program range from standards and bop numbers like the Bird's line Relaxin' at Kamarillo plus a couple of originals (one is a blues from HR himself). I think this is one just perfect session. Verve has just re-released it yet. So, buy it for few bucks. This is another no problem and inspiring jazz album. It came out in 59. HR did very few dates under his own name even if he has been one of the most prolific guitarist known to men. This deserves your attention even if you're not another "dirty guitar player" (like HR and like myself). Howard was a studio musician and a very important educator (he co-founded Guitar Institute of Technology in LA). But this is another story, this is Jazz. HR was a VERY GOOD JAZZ guitar player too. =)))

Coco
Colbie Caillat

Label: Universal Republc (Pressed abroad, Import and repacked in India)

Even without MySpace, singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat is sure to have found an audience, but her oft-accessed page accelerated the process, mostly on the strength of the effervescent "Bubbly." On her first full-length album, the California native conjures up clear skies and warm breezes. Not that the lyrics revolve around her stomping grounds of Malibu and Ventura County, but her mellow melodies sound like products of those places (co-writer Jason Reeves' ukulele playing reinforces the beach music impression). Instead, Caillat sings about love in all its guises, as on "Capri," a tribute to a mother-to-be. The daughter of audio engineer Ken Caillat (Fleetwood Mac's Rumours), who provides production assistance, Colbie combines acoustic pop, light jazz, and blue-eyed soul on Coco. Despite her young age--22 at the time of its release--the record seems likely to attract an older audience, although her sunny singing manages to sound centered and spirited at the same time. Coco doesn't offer anything startlingly new, but its relaxing vibe is hard to resist. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Product Description
Singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat is one of the most celebrated artists to emerge from the growing talent pool of digitally-savvy self-launched artists, whose rise to prominence as the #1 unsigned artist on the popular myspace site has been largely due to her refreshing sense of understatement.
With no marketing push and only the power of the music behind her, Caillat became a sensation on the social networking site. Rolling Stone highlighted her as one of the top female artists on myspace. Ultimately, her number of friends swelled to more than 100,000. Her profile has been visited over 3 million times, and she has more than l0 million plays. She's currently averaging 50,000 + a day.
The songs on Caillat's debut album COCO mirror the Malibu-born Caillat's low-key, refreshing style. Armed with her acoustic guitar and her dusky vocals, she evokes the same gentle, yet spirited style of her musical influences John Mayer, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill and The Weepies. The laid-back tempo of Hawaii, where she spent twice annual family vacations, is echoed in the music.
"She's the real thing," stated Monte Lipman, President of Universal Republic Records. "From her unique songwriting skills to her powerful but understated presence, Colbie has connected to millions of music lovers simply through the power of her music.
