Hi Gang,

Have recently bot Cairn monoblocks MEA (100wpc) and the Cairn Nanda Preamp. Added a cdp from Accurus. Now looking to complete the set up with good floorstanders.

Any suggestions welcome.

Music preference Rock, Smooth Jazz and wee bit of classical (western and carnatic).

Room size 18x12.

Thanks in advance.

I was just reading about a cairn setup here
http://www.jazztimes...etail.cfm?ReviewID=3

just scroll down and they are talking about a Triangle setup..

When you are down to singapore, just drop in to Norman Audio on the 4th floor. those guys are very friendly.. just give them your budget and they will recommend the right triangle speaker for you.

triangles are great.. very dynamic and sweet and wonderfuly delicate at the higher end (I thought they sounded better than equivalent JM labs although that too is an option for you), the newer version has gotten rid of the slightly peaky treble the earlier speakers had.

The are excellent for Jazz/vocals but need to be placed well for Rock...a wee bit bass shy ;). I was quite interested in the stand mounted Triangle Solis, but the dealer here did not have it with him at that time.

couple of other speakers other thean the "Usual Suspects" (Viz quads, Dynaudios, cadence etc) mentioned here would be

-Totem Hawk/forrest
-Harbeth 7s.. standmonts but surprising bass
-Spendor 5e
-Sonus Faber (Grand Piano ? )

could you give your budget. it would be easier then.

Add: Just found another review while I was searching for something on YBA.. http://www.audioplusservices.com/pdf/JMLAB/ELECTRA/STEREO2.PDF

Hey Arj,

Thanks for the links and the dope. I didnt visit Norman Audio cos I thought it looked slightly forbidding and a bit "extra" hi-end, if you know what I mean? But will give them a spin the next time around. The only problem is to get the speakers from there to here. Cant bring them on the flight (those Traingles certainly look like they would be around 30-40 kg each).

My budget is around 1 to 1.50. I figure I can get it around half of that budget in Singapore. But still wrestling with the shipping.

I auditioned the Sonus Faber at Audionote the last visit. Are the other brands available in mumbai? If they can be auditioned in either Singpore or Hong Kong, pls do let me know. I did not see the brands at the outlets in Adelphi tho.
Thanks again.

there is a freight agency in the Mustafa building called Nishad carriers.
they are official carriers to IA and change around 2.5 SGD per Kg and they can put it on the same flight as you.. if you can convince Norman Audio (They are very friendly and not imposing) to underinvoice ( )
you can save duty..

Also triangles are lighter than that (Of course depending on the model)

I think Sonus faber is present in Alpha audio who have outlets in Adelphi and SLS.. not very friendly but if they think you have the moolah they are nice

ckn,

You can yourself take the speakers to Singapore Airlines's Air Cargo facility....it's on the far side of changi airport.

It would cost you not more than 200-400$ to ship to any major metro in India by air.

Once you reach India, you need to personally get it custom cleared from your local airport/customs..

Cheers
Siva.

If you have the opportunity, you might want to audition the the Roksan Caspian FR-5.

Apparently, HiFi Choise have given it a 'best buy' tag.

From the snippets available on the site, seems like it might do the trick for you.

For more see www.roksan.co.uk

Guys,

Thanks for the info on shipping. Will check out the local carrier. At 2.5 per kg the whole thing becomes suddnely viable!

Has anyone checked out the Monitor Audio new silver series...the top end sounded quite good.

They also have a Gold series but the prices are about 2-3 times the Silver.....wondering whether one would spot the difference for all that money.....

the monitor audio gold are better in their midrange with good amps. the GR10 bookshelf is actually a good buy as it has pretty good Bass.. but in that case you must try out the totem Model 1s. quite good as well.

Sonus Faber is sold in India from New Delhi - Sound of Music. Some stock may still be there. You may call Mr. Faisal Hamid on + 91 98100 50300 for product details & prices.

BOB

P.S. I like the Monitor Audio - Gold speakers. They should fit in your budget. Go and have a listen @ Sushil'e place - PLAY. Take your amplifiers along. You will get a better idea that way.

Bob, Arj,

The quoted price for the Gold series of Mon Autdio is 2.20 tho I am sure they will come down. That is about 3 times the quoted price of the new Silver RS series (top end quoted at 72K). While the Gold series may indeed be good but are they worth 3 times the price of the Silver RS series?

Where do I get to hear the Totem in Mumbai?

Maybe you can add the Proac tabelette/ SC1 to your list as well ?

For this kinda money, you have a whole lot of options and the added confusion also.
At this level, people generally would have developed a very strong preference for a certain kind of sound and go for a speaker / setup that will make it possible. If you don’t have, do some research in that direction. This will make sure you don’t buy something which you will regret later. It makes the search more interesting also. There is a huge difference between a horn speaker, hybrid electrostatic, ribbon, quasi ribbon etc… The research needs to take into account your electronics too. The speakers mentioned by most posters are all great but unless you listen to them, you can’t say if you will like them. For example a cadence will sound totally different from a MA Gold although both are hi-rez speakers. The presentation is just different due to their design characteristics and voicing.
For this kind of money, dealers should generally give you a home demo. Talk to some seasoned audiophiles with similar taste in music who does not have any ulterior motives/gain etc..and you may get some pointers. Remember that some speakers won’t sound great with all amps. System synergy matters a lot.

Some brands I can suggest for your kind of music:

Totem
Spendor
Green mountain audio
Proac response series
B&W nautilus series
Dynaudio
Cadence Amaya MK2
Audio note
Linn
Harbeth
Magnepan MG3.6 true ribbon

BTW, must share with you something that came up in another forum (quted from AA)while discussing the Proacs standmounts (Which are aparently much more superior to their floorstanders in midrange)

"Response Ones sound as if they're a more mature women who is more laid back in the way in which she carries herself and is often seen as more mild manner - whereas the Tablettes come off as being say a very youthful 19 year old who is about to find out what life is all about for the first time and is more often to show the world that she isn't afraid to be viewwed by others for what she truthfully is: More alike and has a sense of purpose yet is still seeking a little bit more refinement, a little more show off for her own good."

now isnt that a nice analogy or wot ?

can see that u asked for floorstanders, but wud be worth a try to spend the same amount on a pair of bookshelves given the kind of music that u listen to- NOT BASS HEAVY.

also, remember that the same amount of money gets you a far "higher end" speaker, easier placement, better soundstaging and......

i also blv that u shud focus on what is avbl here for service, trial with yr system/room etc. among the options that hv been given wudnt take the totems as the gentleman changes brands every 3-6 months, leaving the customer high and dry.

try the better known longer lasting brands:

IMHO:
dynaudio-excellent neutral new focus worth a run
monitor- gold series- impeccable but check avlblty of product
spendor-rilliant and worth the deal even to get from sing but is the matching risk worth taking for this money.
totem- not up there and the dealer's no good
proac- good but must be matched before buying
maggie= great for your music if u r willing to live with the unreal larger than life soundstaging.
cadence- always a good try if matches, but mixed opines for the people
harbeth- replaced at bbc recently by dynaudio, so guess the old " bloom" sound no longer acceptable, personally need more precision but very good if u like that voicing
b+w- no comments as am sure others are as disgusted with the service and attitude. own risk. plenty other good options out there to refuse to accept nonsense.

all the best.

Guys,

Thanks for all the info. I finalised the Monitor Audio RS8. I matched it up with the amp and found the sound very nice and since I did the audition at home prior to buying, it was a reliable test. Also, I got a couple of pre-power amps to audition with the spkrs and it stood up to the the test quite well.

Got a good deal too.

Got it set up last evening. Had also bought nice audio rack from Sing (SolidSteel) and some good cables. Been spending the day running the speakers in. The slight harshness should disappear after the initial running.

Drawing the curtains on the windows behind the speakers improved the sound quality quite a bit and that was certainly a revelation to me yesterday!

So after some hunt my audio system is finally up and running:
MEA monoblocks (100wpc)
Nanda pre amp
Accurus CDP
Monitor Audio RS8 floorstanders
AFA interconnets/power cords/speaker wires.
Solidsteel audio rack with cones separating every shelf.

Now to the music!

cheers
