Found this cool software while reading a review on secrets - http://hacca.altervista.org/

Add a decent microphone ( the reviewer suggested Behringer ECM8000 with a 48 volt power supply - under $100 at zzounds), and you have an excellent tool for measuring your rooms frequency response. Maybe then you could play around with placements or crossovers and whatnot to get better sound.
Those who use PC as a source, and have a pro-soundcard, can add EQ to remove the majors bumps and dips.

Thanks zhopudey,

Very useful software, that too for free. The only difficulty is the 2.5 mm Ep jacks that go into sound cards are a real pain themselves. When adapter cords are used, Ep to 2 RCA and the Ep plug is not properly pushed in, it tends to short one channel. Todays motherboards usually have an on board sound card so it has to be pushed in and screwed as close to the chasis as possible.

Could not try the waveform generator, though will have to spend some time learning how to get used to it.

Onboard sound is only good for windows beeps and nothing more :). For any kind of recording, a decent soundcard is an absolute necessity. M-Audio and EMU are good options ;). Most of the good ones have RCA or XLR connectors for input.

I totally agree with you, reignofchaos

However, I think it would be most convenient to run the software off a Laptop.

Besides the portability, the laptop when run off battery, provides an isolated ground.

That would prevent blowing up the stereo if the PC has a live chasis.

Are good quality, External Sound Cards Available in India ?

Any recommendations and approx price ?

Thanks

Heh heh, in India you won't get any unfortunately :(. Good external ones are the M-Audio USB Audiophile and the EMU 0404 USB. I use the former as an SPDIF source for my DAC and its really good for that purpose. It costed me 135$ or so the last time I visited amreeka. Might be cheaper online though. A really good cheap option is the M-Audio transit. At less than 100$, its stunning value. These guys sell m-audio in india but at bloated prices.

I have an EMU 040 in my PC, and I'll try this out once I get a good mic. (anyone can lend me one? :P) I use my pc as a source, so I can use the EMU's DSP for correcting the response. Unfortunately, the parametric EQs don't go below 50hz, so I won't be able to correct the bass respose
(Not that my PC speakers have much bass to speak of :P)

Hi reignofchaos,

Today's mptherboards have quite decent on board sounds, very unlike the AC87's. I am referring to the ASUS K8V which has an SPDIF out and Aux LIne In plus the terminal 3 Ep jacks.

The spdif will not be bit perfect, as it will pass thru k mangler As for the quality of DACs and ADCs, less said the better.
