A great initiation to tube sound

Had the pleasure of listening to one of the true classics of audio and in particular tube audio gear. The Leak Stereo 20.

Amazing piece of hardware considering it is more than 50 years old!!

very few companies make such long lasting high quality gear anymore.

This was the icing on the cake where i spent a day in my friend's place (a headfier) with 5 tube headphone amps, all DIY some prototype a couple that will never see production.

I have never been so humbled.
hoping to spend more time with those beauties, though the Leak 20 may longer be there.

So what was you experience with the music you listened to with the tubes ?

I will be getting a tube rig Manek..eventually.

After this tryst with tubes, I am very curious to learn the electrical side of how these things work.
Right now, I am delving into the (i mean Now) the RCA Radiotron handbook.

There is so much i could talk about those headphone amps regardless of how less time i spent with them because the differences were obvious to me. let me suffice by saying that every time i switched between amps, it brought a smile on my face. And for me that means hook, line and sinker.

I am scared of tube head amps !! Too high voltages inside

You all are true very easy to get hooked to tube sound.

you know..that's very true..when my friend told me he's got 300 volts on the board, I almost thought to myself..." would i fry my head if the amp failed?".

But he's got a DC protection circuit on it and that should cut off DC from the output in the event of a failure of the tubes or the circuitry.

How safe that alone is, i donot know.

Ani, the speakers in your profile pic looks like they are either placed really far from the rear wall or they are placed where there is no rear wall...was this intentional?

I am curious to know how they sound with the rear walls so far behind but close to the side walls.

Yes Sachi, the placement is intentional. They are almost in the middle of a 10m long and 4.5m wide living area. At this position the rear ports are free and no wall to help, very clean and fast bass, with a very deep soundstage. At time I can open the french windows you see at the sides and behind my chair, that can make it almost a No room situation. The large BC ACT4 speakers can pump out good amount of quality LF even under this situation.

I dont think you will fry yr Head, only te Headphone's Voice coil worst case ....

Actually, I am a fan of STAX Electrostatic 'Earspeakers' and own a pair.

These wonderful sounding creatures have 500 Volts on a grind, millimeters away from EACH ear !

No deaths have been reported .... YET ..

... though I swear it causes me sometimes want to scratch my ear canal, probably by making the hair in the ear canal stand up ?

i know Manek, saw the pics...very very nice...actually had even contacted Viren about procuring one..finances demand that I wait a bit longer for that.
