Jochen, yes it is the story that won't end as to who was aping who on this unison research thing.
Incidently I used have an old audio mag which had reviewed the absolute 845 in the late 90's and that article also mentioned that an el34 version of that amp was to be launched soon....but that amp I don't think was ever launched unison research....food for thought.....btw the 845 has bais pots and meters bang center and that is so cool...such a nice touch. I am sure other amps may have it but haven't seen any till date.

Siva, nice going on the phono stage.

That's why I like the VA-1 with just the two cabs in the middle even better. It's just damn consequently executed by the designer.

Jochen if I remember correctly the 845 absolute is a dual mono design on pre and power sections including the source selector. I think they share a common power supply though.

I have heard both;
The Canasya on a 'regular basis'
In Mumbai & Pue.
The UR - I have heard only once with Opera Speakers.
However cannot comment. Sorry !!

This is the speaker for Manek - T & A [Dire Straits] !

The 845 absolute I have not heard but I have heard the UR s2k extensively and if I were to go by that, not very similar. Kt88 and EL34....different tubes

Don't know about the canasya and the 845 absolute. My uncle who had heard the 845 absolute and the canasya says the canasya rocks is comparision.

I guess for one the canasya has far more headroom and power. the other side the canasya trumps the UR was on bass control and speed.
I was also told the mids and highs were excellent in both.

But I do like the UR sound that I heard from the small but sweet s2k.

Bhagwan, you sound more strict than the moderator himself

Ofcourse the UR looks better...the right word would be "more elegant". I always liked the look and feel of "real wood" in audio equipment...but that is my choice.

Who can fault the italians on style ? The UR sure looks classy.

Canasya on the other hand looks good too but a bit different hence the love it or hate it emotions from onlookers. Ofcourse once the canasya starts to sing, it hard not to like it.

Mine is a humble DIY setup. While it might not be a good-looker like UR or Cadence, it has a total of 13 valves glowing (it will be 17 when the phono stage is added)..it is quite a sight when all lights are turned off in the night (it does not matter how ur setup looks anymore ).

The 845's though are a bit loud in thier brightness...if only they were a 'tad' dimmer

Your DIY setup is better looking and sounding, than several mega buck systems.

Rajiv,

Really speaking the UR and Cadence design are very good. Cadence 845 amp does not look good on photo though...u have to see it in-person to appreciate it.

Mine might be good for a DIY solution, but not quite in the same league as the other two amps ... atleast when it comes to the looks aspect. I feel mine looks a bit "industrial" compared to the other two amp...the wood front-panel is the only saving-grace.

So i'm taking solace in the thought that....the glow of the tubes makes the "looks" aspect....pretty much non-relavant.

Regards
Siva.

Don't forget the other advantages
1) Look of valves in darkness = heaven

2) Lower noise on the electrical lines which makes your setup sound better

3) No or little road/ambient noises which makes for a better listening experience

......Which makes you love your tube amp even more !

Yes, the Allaerts carts are really good. But because of their very low output voltage you need an excellent phonostage. Allaerts cartridges are also very often used on Simon Yorke decks and the SY distributer in Germany, who is also the distributer for JA has developed a phonostage custom made for JA carts. http://www.isenbergaudio.de/Elektronik/elektronik.html

Sorry I must correct myself here. with 0.5 mV the MC1B has quite a normal output for a MC. Only the MC2s have quite a low output (0.15 mV and 0.2mV)

the problem is not with the camera but with the lighting. with a tripod and some more diffused light the amplifier body could also have been brought out better...currently the glow of the valves will affect the exposure due to relative brightness to the surround.

could try at a higher ISO..if this was at 100, around 400 might give a clearer pic.

anyway Doc is the master of the film camera as well so his "Fundas" on this would be rock solid.

yes, Goolimangala. I've ended up with a Basis Audio Vector 3 tonearm. I am very happy with my decision. The Vector 3 tonearm is a simply excellent one - explosive dynamics & very magical vocals. It is a unipivot arm (as you know). The trial & error part of this arm is the amount of silicone damping fluid that one has to put in the trough to stabilize the arm. I was able to find a kind member on the audio forum who also had this same arm & was able to give me a very good starting point. Thus, I able to get the correct level almost right away.
The Schroeder arm was very good but the wait in the USA for them was 17 months back then! Plus, the arms were very expensive. It was recommended that I either go in for the entry level Model 2 OR jump straight to the Reference model. The one in between was too expensive for what it provided. In the end the cost & the wait made me drop the whole Schroeder tonearm idea.

G.S. Madhav's pix of his set-up @ night-time is nice indeed given that the pix was taken casually (as admitted by the photographer himself).
Not to rain on G.S. Madhav's parade - I too have an amp that uses EL34s & that too a total of 12! What I do not like about EL34s is that there is hardly any glow from them when the lights are off. The construction of this tube is such that all the glowing elements are hidden/covered & very little light emanates from within. This is in contrast to the KT88s I have in another tube amp - those tubes glow blue in the night when the inert gas inside gets energized with the heat. Now, THAT is a sight to see. Even my wife, who has a passing interest in my gear, quite enjoyed the visual.
The 845s are yet another story. Those are like very bright Xmas tree lights!
