Hi,

I need some help as am a bit confused. My budget is anywhere between 20-30k and I am undecided whether I should buy a Cambridge Audio 640A or a Yamaha AX-596.

Pricewise there is not much difference but Yamaha provides 145W per channel in comparision to Cambridge's 75W per channel.

Can u guys please suggest.

you should check if that 145 it the peak or continuos rating

nway thats a seperate issue
i would get the yam even if its 60-70rms

i have a bit of exp with the yam 497 and i found it to be superior to the Azur buildwise.
muscially it was a better amp too

With Yamaha – I would not touch the AX series. If you really want something from that brand, look at their A-S series. But they are not really value for money.
Given the choice you have, it is Cambridge audio any day.
The paper specs say nothing.

For the same money you would do lot better buying a Used Amp.
If it has to be new then I would look at Marantz.

If you want to save some money and still get better than Yamaha and Cambridge, look at Norge Gold Concerto. They beat the hell out of all the amps we are talking here!!

Totally agree either this or buy one of the chinese amps which offer far better vfm than the stuff you are talking about.

I have more second hand opinions than first hand experience. But I have heard them personally as well, the rest of the chain was not great though. They generally have a tone which I would call Warm + Dynamic + Punchy. They handle most speakers pretty well. Their 110 watts odd is pretty conservative as well compared to what the Japanese equivalents quote. Hope that helps!!
