Hey folks,

The following is the situation,

I connect a 200W Stepdown transformer to convert 230V into 110 V, without any change in frequency, to an Integrated Amp which accepts 110V and has a Max power consumption of 180W.

Assumption,
1. It is not possible to get the transformer of the amp converted at the OEM.
2. The Transfomer is at a distance of about 3 feet from the main unit and speakers to decrease distortion.

Questions,
1. Will there be any degradation in the audio quality ?
2. Which one is better off - Toroidal or Non-toroidal ?

-Regards

actually now that i come to think of it, if u have a good quality transformer u will not suffer quality degradation issues..
If u are in Bangalore then i suggest u try Miracle(toroidal.com) and yes go for the toroidal transformers..
If u are in Kerela then i sugggest u try trnasforemrs from Toroid India..
Give me the VA rating and i'll let u know how much Miracle is charging for it...
Cheers,
Benks

Hi,
With the little engineering backround I have I can say :
It very well may (degrade the sound), and I would add it probably will. How and how much, I cannot know. Perhaps a little, perhaps a lot, it all depends on how poweful it is, how well made, etc. At best, it's a series resitance and inductance, and as such, it cannot but influence the sound.
and secondly, I dont think any stepdown transformer can take care of the cycle difference, ie we are on 50HZ and the US on 60HZ.
Well if it was a CD player/ Turntable I would surely say it might even would slow down the speed.
Hope this helps.
Sandeep.

The frequency will remain at 50Hz, the voltage needs to be brought down.

Has anyone tried this setup successfully before ?
Please let me know.

Hi All,

I shall let you know about the same when I try out the Outlaw Preamp with a Step down transformer.

If you are in Bangalore you are welcome to check it out.

Regards,

Junia.
