hey shahrukh!

me 29, going to be 30 soon. quite surprising that so many here are on the other side of 30-35. think this generation has pretty much lost its taste for good sound i guess barring a few exceptions here and there. bet u can do a study on that purnendu on how the tastes and preferences of generations change...

Thanks Stevie,
Next time a student comes seeking ideas for an interesting in Ph.D topic, I will suggest something of the kind.

As you age, the taste widens & deepens... Volumes are somewhat lowered.... and from boom you move to tight bass...

From a stormy love affair, you settle into a marriage with music ....

... but then comes along the Seven Years Itch and you want to experiment with the 7.something

Did I say that

Actually what I meant was that from two channels then, the surrounds are born

And you live happily thereafter ..... (at least you are supposed to)

Hi Dhavan,

I have moved from a 7-ch system to a 2-ch system, 1st the HT bug then strictly 2-ch absolutely the converse to your situation

Kinda similar situation here. Was all gung-ho about multi-channel till very recently. However, since the Mrs still enjoys her morning radio and "virtual" feel in movie soundtracks, no stereo amp for some time. Marantz does decent duty on S-Direct mode. Thank heavens I went in for a Marantz AVR instead of a Yam!

It takes a while but the magic of stereo is something else. I still enjoy occasional ,multi-channel SACD listening (on some dealer's system ;)) though.

looks like one man's upgrade is another man's downgrade to rehash an old saying that was doing the rounds some time back on the forum. but i'm guessing one thing's for sure, almost everyone here has moved up from the boombox

I never UPGRADED from my 2 Ch system. Somehow i feel multichannel stuff is NOT for Music. Its only for MOVIES.. IMHO.

Multichannel systems give MUSIC an artificial feel. What you hear is NOT what is REAL or what was INTENDED in the studio. I guess most of us (those into music) are purists that way and would like to hear the ORIGINAL thing.

If you love music you WILL move away from the boombox. It's human nature to never be fully satisfied until you get what you want.

I'll rephrase that..."you'll never be fully satisfied with a boombox."

Hi Guys !

The seven years itch was just a joke

I'm still very faithful to my wife - pure 2 channel music

I wonder if ever multichannel music in the form of SACD or DVD-Audio will be able to replace that?

You are right doc. As such it is difficult to place 2 speakers at home with proper setup. 3 additional speakers (+ i sub) on top of that is a nightmare.

There is a small "but" though. The "mango man" (aam-admi) does not think/feel sound setup is necessary. And that is how the companies are able to sell 5.1channel boom boxes. You should see the herd mentality here. "Oh..he bought a Bose Lifestyle 25, so I want Bose Lifestyle 50..etc". These people don't care for the speaker placement. I see the front 3 little cubes all decked up within 3 feet (just above plasma). And why do they do it? "Oh..those speakers hide easily..our friends are impressed".

But a true audiophile cares a lot more about "music" than impressing anyone. And that is the reason why SACD/DVD-A surround will have a very difficult competition against plain 2 -channel. Another reason is - when I go watch a orchestra, all the players are in front of me...no one plays a timpani/cello on by back

A good 5.1 multichannel setup sounds vey good, that I must say (If the recording is done correctly) th problem is the cost and setup... so if you have the money it can be pretty amzing.

would i like it for music : Yes.. but can i afford a setup equivalent to my 2 channel - No !

5.1 is good for HT and my HT setup cannot compete with my Hifi for Music !

As Milpai rightly said that we are used to having the music play in front of us rather than around us. I would personally found it distracting having a musical instrument playing behind me. Moreover, imaging cannot be accurate behind us - our ears are made to have stereo perception only in front. The preception of sounds from behind is only supposed to be alerting / alarming.

What says you?

Sanjay

I, unfortunately, seem to have the longest journey in-front of me in upgrading. I am still stuck on 1930’s tubes. So that’s about 75+ years of catching up to do. I think I will just give up and spend the rest of my life with the hopelessly inadequate tubes

The more I look at new hi fi costs, more I am inclined to believe that the industry is hell bent of driving away genuine audiophile. Just last month my missus and daughter installed a new HT systems at our home. The total outlay was more than what my company was making as annual profit even 10 years ago. And one day when the ladies were away, I mustered enough courage to open up the main HT receiver. The parts would not add up to even Rs. 5000. So much for the high end audio.
