Hi,

I own a pair of Tannoy Mercury F2 speakers aka Tannoy Fusion 2's.At the time of purchase due to budget constraints I was unable to do justice to the other elements in the setup ( Local Amp + Off the shelf Pioneer DVD player) .

At the recent AVMAX exhibition in Mumbai in Nov I was painfully reminded of my inferior set up ,when at the demos I witnessed comparable speakers churning out absoulute beauties ( due to their superior setup)

My question is whether I should invest money in a a good source ( player ) or receiver or amplifiers.

Again I am constrained by my budget.

Would appreciate the opinion of the forum members

The Tannoy fusions may not really be bad speakers.. and yes you would need both a good amp and a source.

I am not very familiar with Tannoys to suggest an amp.. but depending on our budget you could actually start with a nice Tube amp (Tannoys are usually very sensitive speakersz and sing with tubes)
.. and then the source (Unfortunately for optimum sound you will need to upgrade both)

Try to buy the best you can now as later even if you upgrade your speakers your electronics continue to complement.

For good tubes there are options depending on oyur budget (Perhaps Viren/Siva/others can guide you to their designs as well)

If you dont want tubes the usual suspects of NAD/MARANTZ/Rotel would ideally float your boat !

But please do not compare the sound with the high cost setups you have seen.. they do Cost :).. but with simple placement and putting in sincere effort you still can coax out good sound from even entry level setups !

Dear Arun,
Hi! There are many websites that teach you how to setup your system properly. Do a search on google and you will be amazed how many sites you get.

A system setup professionally will always sound better than one not. Also the most important component in the entire chain is & always be the source. Spend a decent amount on the source. Try and ask your dealer to give you a home demo for the source.

Rgds

Has anyone come accross dealers in Mumbai, who are ready to give a demo at home? Talking about amps & CDP. During the AV Max show last year, I had asked LaKozy for a demo at home but they flatly refused.

Dear Arun,

Try the Marantz cd 5001 (13k) and Marantz pm 4001 (17K) with
your Tannoy fusion 2.

If there is any chance of buying a Sonic Impact T amp (From the US but only 30 USD or so so duty should be ok).
In that case you can splurge the rest on the Source.

The amp is a gem

I believe the T-amp is good for speakers with a high sensitivity. (Above 90). How sensitive are the Tannoys?

Hi Arun,
At this point of time looking at your setup and budget constraints.....I would say you go for a good amp first. Any number of source upgrade wont help if the amp is at the least DECENT. You seem to be using a local amp which are basically meant for local speakers and not for hifi.

If you wanna hear a difference then go for a decent amp first. Pioneer DVD player may not be the best of the sources but its atleast decent enough to be managed with. Your amp is the weakest link out there and you desperately need to upgrade that for any reasonable improvement in the Sound quality IMO.

As you start outgrowing the setup then you can definitely upgrade the source.

Infact Arun, I dont think you are upgrading. You are still in the process of setting up your initial hifi. The local amp you have mentioned is nothing but a piece of electronics which makes your speaker to sound (which you have been just pulling through) but the actual buy of a good amp is still pending on your part. Once you get all your setup up to a mark then you can think of upgradation (source/amp/speaker whatever).

Are there any dealers for sonic t-amp in India?

Question 2: is there any online store which retails this amp and also takes international shipments?

Thanks

Tannoys are known for sensitivity.. usually in the 90+ region. but youd be surprised by the T amp. in spite of the low power they drive 87db 4 Ohm speakers quite well ! (Mine is 89db 4 Ohms and my pre is at a 10% volume setting as i use the tamp as a power amp only! )

NO ..

Partsexpress.com and thinkgeek. com. but they both need a min order amt for international shipments. would be a good idea if you can do a group buy.

Another option is Ebay US.. that way they ship it as a radio or something attracting less duty.

Getting into specifics:

What amp are you using? What are its capabilities (low impedence driving, reserve power, any actual measurements of the output voltage at which clipping takesplace, distortion specs etc.) vis a vis the demands made by the Tannoys? What is the brand & model of your source? What kind of listening room are you keeping your setup in? Are you carpeting your floor? Is your room "live" in any way? Does it give lot of of echoe by the very nature of its construction? Is there lot of glass, or mirrors in the room? How did you arrange your speakers (close to / away from the wall? whether you toed-in? If so how much? Is one of your speakers close to a corner and the other away from it?) What is the length of the interconnects & speaker cables? Are they of the equal length for both the channels? What kind of cables and interconnects are they?

Please don't think that just by changing components to big-names you can get great sound. Before upgrading to better components, always try to improve the sound of your existing setup by means of scientific arrangement.

Dear Observer
Please go to Lakozy, choose a system and then ask Priyesh Patel for a home demo.He will oblige,if you spend some time seriously at his establishment and make a selection of components which are most likely to work in your house. He has done it for me.

Tks Kspv,

Actually not too much of a set up. I am going to be shifting pad soon ,so would not be making any big time investment at the moment. However currently the speakers are ideally spaced out , not too close to the walls on TV stands ( they serve the basic purpose ) I am unable to go for speaker stands as I have junior around the place.Dealer has supplied with reasonably good cables ( equal length). DVD is Pionerr DVD 366a , no carpets , area is around 300 sq feet.No interconnects used.Clipping has not occured so far.My Amp is a local amp named Revel AL 100.( My Dealer says that it is made a a guy who used to work for dolby digital and now has started his own stuff) . In fact at the time of Demo It was a Nad CDP + revel amp + Tannoy's . I was quite happy with the effect.

Point taken that buying the big guys does not guarantee and ideal set up.

thanks and regards

Arun
