I'm new to the game. I need help to choose a sub. The existing setup is listed below.

Yamaha 450, Pioneer dv575, Jbl E30 and EC25

Presently some old speakers can do the surround duty but am thinking of jbl control 1 for the back (9k).

The budget about 20000 rs.

Location Delhi, 75% movies, 25% music, Medium size room with no carpet and generally bare walls. Wife does not like it too loud.

Here is what I found:

Yamaha 215 - 14500
Yamaha 315 - 19000
Sony Wm 500 - 12000 appx
Wharfedale Pc10a - 15000
Jbl 150 - 26000
Boston Pv350 - ?
Mordaunt Short - 25000 appx
Cervin wega avs - 8000

There is also a Jamo which is way overbudget. (35k)

Help me guys, where should I go from here.

Try the following brands:

Velodyne around 25k.
Polk Audio around 15k.
Definitive Technology (available in your budget but dont know the exact price)
Sonodyne around 12k - 17k
Lithos around 15k
Klipsch around 22k

Thats a long list but all of them are worth auditioning and moreover you have to check out their availability also.

Velodyne is the best.
Klipsch may follow.

Thank you abhi. Do you know where I can locate a velodyne ?

Upto now had almost 100% decided on the yamaha 315, but will wait to listen to more ...

A word on the surrounds - the JBL guy is pushing to sell me the control 1s for 9k. At present I have some old Sonys - from their S9D system. 4400 watts Ha! Ha! Didnt know that Sony's watts have to be divided by 100 to get real.

I bought that system 2 1/2 years ago in some drunken moment coupled with a bank guy who offered easy instalments. Wife liked the looks - wood finish and all that. Used to think it was the best system till I started reading the forums, then visiting showrooms, then getting hooked onto all this.

Now I wouldn't give away that piece of crap to my worst enemy - it would be too mean. But for temp surround duty - well ok.

BTW did you know that my car can do 14000km/hour pmpo???

Yes COOK, your Sonys can very well do the job of surrounds so you can keep them. BTW are the JBL Control 1 a surround speaker ? If yes is it dipole or bipole stuff or a normal Sattelite/Bookshelf style ?

What is the original price of those speakers (Control 1), how much discount are you getting.....

Also do have patience to listen to the Brands mentioned above (for the sub)....Yamaha is crap for acoustics...

Lithos SUB is around 21K. Very solid build and finish with a pulz amp 150 RMS,included. They are not pushy in their sales.

HI Abhi,

Point taken abt Yamaha. Will locate and listen to options.

Control 1 is a small size 2 way ported studio monitor which comes with optional wallmount brackets. Freq 70 hz to 20000hz, power handling 150w 8ohm. They sound fab but no significant bass at all.

Price is about 9500/pair but probably he will give about 10% off.

Check the JBL site in "Control Series". Please distinguish between Control 1 and control 1 extreme. The first is superior to the extreme in different ways - power handling capacity, 8ohm vs 4 ohm etc. Both are available at same price.

http://www.jbl.com/Best_Home_Stereo_Speakers.htm

I find that in this case, if there is a list price from JBL USA in dollars, the dealer here tends to charge the same (converted into rupees). Of course on the net and in discount shops, prices may be much lower ... BUT if you look at a european seller - in europe - the prices are often slightly higher than the converted indian price. Therefore one can only moan a bit about the monopolistic situation of the seller, but I do not feel too bad because I am paying the same or less as, for example, a frenchman.

BTW I used to live in France where JBL is popular hence the leaning toward this brand. Just go to a french site such as fnac.fr and see the prices.

A JBL E30 bookshelf is 18000 Rs. It is 400 euro on Fnac (22000 appx) and lists at usd 300. You can find it on amazon at usd 135. The dealer can have fun until someone like amazon lands here. Then we will have the laugh ...

hi there,

Seriously chuck all of these, consider the velodyne.
The VX10 is their entry level model. Its priced at 27k.
Or you could consider the Def Tech pro sub 200 at 27k.

Guys I got the Boston PV500 and it rocks. I have a more recent post here somewhere and even more happiness was expressed in that last week when I finally bought it ...

SNV is prob right in saying chuck all that- In front of the Boston, all of them fade away - perhaps the only really good other one that I heard was the JBL E250 but that was 11k more than the Boston.

I agree that SVS enjoys a lot of support from its customers and we see great reviews and raves about this particular brand.
But, then again u have to factor in the price.
I paid less than300$ for my sub. For that price even you can't argue that the DEf Tech is huge VFM.
whereas the decent SVS start atr around 800$.
haven't heard the SVS myself but i can bet that you can make a sub if not two that can beat the pants out of an SVS(or whatever brand)if you are technically inclined and have hands on experience.

I have heard some good reviews about Dayton as a good VFM sub... (even see it in partsexpress). Does any dealer stock it in India?

Dayton is a brand that partsexpress owns.
They market their own drive units among other items udner the Dayton brand.

Good VFM. I know, cause i own a couple of them.
And no, u won't find a dealer here.
Gotto buy direct from partsexpress.

My mail to part express
===========================================================
Dear Sir,
I am from India, would like to place an order for DAYTON TITSK-10K 10" TITANIC MKIII SUBWOOFER KIT. I would like to know following
1. Do you process order from India
2. What will be shipping charges to Mumbai Port, India by Sea??
3. Estimated delivery time.

I am eagerly awaiting your reply as few of my friends are also interested in buying this incredible piece of equipment. Regards
===========================================================

Their response to my mail

===========================================================
Hello,

Thank you for your interest in our company. We only ship Air overseas, so the cost for shipping would be high. The item is 358.80 and shipping for 1 is 393.99 to India. Would only take about 5 days to get to you. We would also require wire transfer or Paypal for payment. Please let us know if we can help with anything else.

Best Regards,

Hi

Increasing the qty would reduce shpping cost per piece & may attract discounts. Pooling may help.

Even I would be interested in buying one at that price + reasonable shipping costs

Do revert in case you wish to further deal with the vendor with increased qty

Regards

Hey guys,
well we had a group buy on diyaudio.com where all the diy audio chaps from India got together and ordered from Partsexpress.
It works out a lot cheaper that way.
partsexpress service quality is top notch. Totally opposite to the way we customers are treated back here in India.

I too would be interested in ordering a couple of drive units(depending on shipping costs).

So keep me posted.

I am from Mumbai. Pls suggest how do we go ahead - coordinate

Let us take it from there.
