Hi, need some advice. I got a Marantz surround receiver SR5300. Was expecting it to produce surround sound when playing my cd on an external dvd player. hwoever, seems like there is no setting that allows that. Is it true that the souce must be 5.1 before you can play surround? OR can receiver actually reproduce surround when the source is not 5.1/6.7/7.1??

ps help

Hi Jimbo,
you should be able to produce a pseudo surround sound using the DSP modes on the marantz. I have a SR5500 and can do this with it and you should be able to do so too. Apart from that, unless you are actually using a 5.1 recorded source you will not have a good musical experience. Actually regular stereo music will sound like crap when played on a 5.1 system with the DSP surround mode enabled.

hey jimbo.....

the receivers are meant to produce 5.1 surround from a regular CD using the all channel stereo mode in ur receiver....this is bydefault built in any receivers....so try finding out this mode by going thru the manual.....it shud help u out....

edges,
I live in hyderabad. I purchased the 5500 in taiwan for $500 US which worked out to about Rs.22K, that was half of what i was quoted here. Later i heard from some dealers that they would go down to Rs30K for the 5500 without papers.

Anirvan,
I just toggle between the surround modes and it does the rest, I can choose any of the modes and the receiver will do its DSP magic and produce a virtual surround sound effect.
The manual that came with the 5500 is very very bad, hardly explains anything at all.
I am still looking for a better explanation about all the functions it has
