Hi,
i have been observing the posts on this forum, and there seem to be quite a few learned sould out here.

I wanted some sugesstions on a reciever+ tower speakers setup.

My budget would be around 45K. I have tried out yamaha 350,450,550,sony de875, for speakers i have tried out wharfedale diamond 8s, sonodyne sonus, mission mi70.

The yamaha's sound quite bright, but do OK on mission speakers. I was most impressed with the missions , they really delivers on clarity and low end stuff, not bad on imaging also. The sonodyne really deliver on imaging, one really feels the performer is right there on jazz music.

I am confused since most entry level recievers tend to be bright. what should i look at?

I listen to all linds of music, led zep,U2, to fusion, to mainstream pop.

I like a balance of clarity without vocals becoming shreiking and decent amount of bass, little less than the subwoofer kind.

i was also thinking of a combo of speakers good on clarity but cheap and adding on a sub.

pls advise folks

Yes, thats the question !! You have to decide about your preferences. Also you should be very clear about your future plans regarding upgradation. If you are planning to upgrade to a dedicated Stereo amp for music in near future then you can go for a cheaper reciever pricing around 17k - 18k and spend rest of the money on the speaker. Else if the receiver is going to be the main driving unit for long then think about something >25k e.g HK or AZur (Cambridge audio) which have good stereo output as well. In this case you have less money left for the speakers so the choices will be very limited, then its easy to sort it out......

i would basically listen to music, but would add on speakers later for surround for movies. See even in this budget which is 45k for front speakers and a reciever, there are a lot of choices but the problem becomes that you can only audition a reciever brand with a certain set of speaker brands. So my problem is which ones fit my kind of listening needs.

I think you can go for HK AVR130(reciever) + Sonodyne Sonus 2605/Diamond 8.4s/Torvin Phantom9 any of these speakers in your budget. Go and see each of these speakers and you will come to know about your preferences and which one fits your taste. Cant advise you to go for a higher end reciever than the HK as it will surely raise the budget by another 8k or so. Check if you can get any stuffs from grey market, then even bigger things can fit in. In the mean time, go and see these speakers and also see with what source they are performing...

I don't know your market and the prices, but a marantz-receiver would surely also be a reasonable choice (onkyo are said to be good as well). As you have only two speakers for a while, stereo is quite important.
concerning tower-speakers, surely also to be put in consideration:
-KEF Q-series (maybe a bit expensive)
-Monitor Audio Bronze
-Infinity
-Wharfedale Diamond (already mentioned)

oh, and besides: I'm currently owning a denon 1804 and trying to get rid of it, because stereo quality isn't satisfying me!
ok I came from a bigger amp, but that was 30y old and so i thought it would work.. but it doesn't, at least not for me...

thanks but now its getting confusing. On one hand there is a set of guys who would put there money on denon( which are a lot) and then you dont recommend it. Maybe your reasons are entirely different. Marantz are nice but 10K more than other comparative models. Lets see. My only problem is that i cant mix and match combinations and test them in delhi as retailers stock only one reciever brand.

Lot of people are kicked by a wharfedale but i have tested them and i found them disapointing. they seem to lack. what i dont know for sure, but the dont just give a kick in your face when you put them on.

Would appreciate some comments on Polk monitors, they are reasonably priced and have a huge heritage to live up to.

Any comments pls.

well that's a weird thing to say. why would anyone want feel like as though they were kicked in the face. what was the setup in which u auditioned it and which model.
i would expect a pair of speakers to make my heart skip a beat but not expect it to make me feel like i got kicked in the face.

Benks goodears is not wrong but wrong positioning by dealers to accomodate more stuff screws up things. even I was shocked to read this about whafedales as there have been praisese and rave reviews about them, so I feel lack of bass from speakers or subs in showrooms are quite common as they don't place it properly and too much of glass around, so acoustics there gets no marks from me.

Placement might be the problem. But it also may be a factor of the music. I went without my own stuff and they had an assortment of which i played nearly 8 CDs. No joy happenned.
Somehow i just wasnt satisfied with them.

Similiarly i tried some Jamo's and when the bass guitar kicks in, it makes you smile. Both were tested with denon 1604 recievers

Abhi, i am looking for floorstanders.

I went to the sony showroom on a lark. The recievers were sounded very poor but was surprised by the speakers. They seemed very well composed. Bass though not too much, was taut. Very impressed. Close to my impressiion on mission speakers. and decently buit with kevlar woofers.

At that price 10k, they were good value, had good clarity. Bass can be compensated by adding on a sub.

Guys check them out. Maybe i'm wrong. But would appreciate some views.

hy

the denons are not bad, in surround mode my 1804 is really satisfying. but as I've come down from a massive old revox it just has some minor yes, but (to me) serious lacks in stereo quality (I'am aware of this being not really an "equals competition); if you had a compact-sony or whatever before it will surely satisfy you. I however am missing the accentuation and the fineness but the punch and "relaxedness" as well (hope I've put this right in english). using my old JBL speakers (25y, new: about 1800 US$) with the revox I couldn't have passed Volume 5 (of 10) without killing the speakers, whereas they would easily roast the denon "still smiling brightly"...

about towerspeakers: I was really surprised by the punch of a phonar p20 which looks so cute but produces a surprising fundament. if you find some near you, you should surely take a look at them
