Hello everybody,

After some gap i am posting again on this forum.

This time its for one of my close friend. He is planning to setup a HTS but is on a tight budget which he still has to decide upon. So here are my queries:

1. suggest the best DVD player available under 5K range and other one under 8K range.

2. AVR + spkr package under 15K range and another under 20K range. it can be a 2.0, 2.1 or 5.0, 5.1 setup.

please post me ur suggestions.

regards - Sunil Yohannan

Oh...you are still waiting ???
You have put a very difficult budget to work on buddy, may be thats the reason there's no response

Ok, lets try...
for 20k you get a JBL escXcite. Its a HTIB and you just have to add a DVDP. I have heard them casually, they sound better than most Sony, philips stuffs around.
http://europe.jbl.co...ROPE&cat=ESC&ser=ESC

For around 25k you get Onkyo HTIB (which I never liked) .

Then there is another solution I can think off...Shahrukh (our forum member) is selling off his Marantz SR-4400 AVR. Its an excellent AVR buddy. So nice with both music and movies..
And then buy a pair of Wharfdale/Mordaunt Short bookshelves for 11k. Later on, he can add up the rears, center and the sub. But one thing is sure that he himself wouldnt have imagined the kind of sound he will get from this setup.

DVD player : Philips (with HDMI) for Rs 4-5K or pioneer 696 (should be around 6-7K. I am not sure. Pioneer has both SACD and DVD-audio playback. Some DVD-audios are being released by YashRajfilms.. If that trend picks up, it will be worth having a dvd-audio player.

AVR : Difficult to get for 10K in India. In Singapore/US it is very easy to find. So if you have anyone coming from these two places, get hold of a decent receiver from there.

Speakers: 10K : 2 bookshelves: Options from Sonodyne/Polk/Mordaunt Short/Wharfadale etc...depending on what receiver you end up getting.

Another option is Genie powerpack from sonodyne. 2.1 setup with 2 satellite and subwoofer. It even has a built in amp. costs 15K. I had checked it out. It is really good, since I managed to get a receiver itself, I didnt go for this setup.
What I liked about it is you can use all components after upgrade too.

Cheers!

Thanks Abhi (the great) and kvish for your replies.

Yes the budget is really low for a HT setup.

Even i was thinking of suggesting the JBL to him. regarding DVD player he is looking for something whose region code can be hacked . is pioneer hackable ??

Hi Karthik,
Even I like this setup from Sonodyne but its a 2.1 setup and I dont understand how do we upgrade it to 5.1 if required ?

Sorry, I should have been more clear. What I meant was, one could use the genie (as rears or fronts) and the subwoofer in the 5.1 setup. Ofcourse with a receiver which I assume would be bought at a later stage...

Hmm...thats a solution but not a very optimized one considering that once you go for a AVR, the two channels of amplification thats inside the sub (to drive the fronts in 2.1 setup) goes redundant. Moreover the sub in this case is decent for stereo but doesnt have the depth/extension required for HT. It does good tight bass upto 50-55hz but doesnt go low so its not a great idea to be used in HT, where you are looking at an extension of 35hz and below.

Go for a second hand Marantz AVR. I'm sure you'll find one in the Buy n Sell section!

Hi Sunil,

I may get some brickbats here for the HT solution I am gonna give. But the budget u mentioned here is very tight.
Ask ur friend to go for Logitech z-5500. Ofcourse they are a multimedia setup, but can be used as a HT setup too.IMHO they will beat any cheap HTiB hands down. They cost around 20-21K.
Google around and u will see many users agree with me.

For DVD player there is a Samsung HD player around 8000rs, It has both SACD & DVD-A.

Cheers

thanks sri,

that too can be an option, since my friend wants a complete 5.1 solution and that too with DVD player at one go and cannot wait to upgrade. and in this budget it is quite difficult. until and unless he goes for those HTIB setups from sony/philips etc.

Any idea how do these packages perform and which one could be a better option.

let me check on this. in the mean time apart from logitech z5500 what other models/brand can u suggest.

chaos/ zhop help pls???
