Hi Folks,

This is my first post here,But I have been following the posts on this alias for some time now and find that this is a very knowledgeable bunch that I am talking to!

I need your help in building a home theater on a tight budget. I already have the following:
--Onkyo TX-SR 503 7.1 AV receiver - which I bought from the US.(75 W RMS per channel)
--Sony ns50p DVD player -bought locally recently.

I live in Chennai and I am trying to buy speakers
from here. I have set myself a budget of 25-30k for procuring 5 speakers and a Sub.

I visited Audio people where I thought mordaunt short were good, klipsh was ok. But could not find 5 speakers and a sub within my budget.

I visited Pro-FX who stock polk audio, they did not have RM6750 in stock which was in my budget. but later I read reviews about it which were not so great.so dont plan to audition it.

Pro-musicals in chennai had Wharfedales , I took my receiver along and auditioned the Moviestar 70+ which I rather liked. The music sounded natural and the movie effects were quite good. The only missing aspect was that the Sub does not pack a heavy punch.

Never the less I am almost made up on the wharfedales, and I have read very good reviews about them. What I would like to know is are there any better speaker packages that I am missing out on which are inside of my budget. how do the homegrown brands like Sonodyne, Torvin, Pulz etc. and any other non indian brands compare with the wharfedales ?

One more thing is I might be relocating within India within the metros.I want good service support which buys me piece of mind.

Also do suggest if i should go for floors/bookshelves and a Sub first and then buy rears later. Is matching the components that way a trickly issue ?

Some thing about my tastes : Movies:Music - 70:30. I Like Dire Straits, Eagles,Bon Jovi,Aerosmith Kishore Kumar and some indi pop.

Your tastes matches mine....
BTW if you wanna go for floors + sub now and rears later, its always a good idea but you got to see if you get them in your budget. A decent sub would be around 12k (Sonodyne has a good one). Then the rest you can spend on floors.
Wharfdale, Polk, Mission, Sonodyne, Kef Coda/cresta are all in the range of 17k - 22k. You can check them out.

If you want to go for an HT package, Moviestar is a good one and apart from that you can check out Sonodyne Genie package. Its a very good HT package (around 30k only for 5 sats and a Sub).

Hi there,

The best and a no compromise way to go about is to opt for
floorstanders, which would perform far better than the
sat/subs. Just go for good floorstanders now and at a later
stage as and when you wish to upgrade opt for center and
rears. Some floorstanders i would recommend :
mission m73i at 17k, monitor audio at 29k, tannoy f4 at 35k.
For music applications, you wont need the sub. Just add on
when you can.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the suggestions . BTW , I went ahead and picked up the Wharfedale moviestar 70+ , It seemed to be the best deal for watching movies with all the effects right away and also good with music too, I have hooked it all up. the speaker placement is not fully done though and they are just lying on some stools around the TV and furniture. But I am still enjoying the sound that comes from the entire system.( Dire Straits live 'your latest trick' sounded quite good esp. the saxophone )

I have deferred the idea of picking up floors for now , But do plan to do that in a few months time. my plan is to replace the existing front sats with floors and make the front sats as surround back speakers . May be they will be a pair of wharfedales or Monitors as suggested.

Meanwhile I need some help with the crossover settings. The crossover settings in my av receiver can be set till 150.
There is also a crossover setting on the Sub which I have set to midway as per the manual as initial setting. I want to understand some funda on what exactly I am doing by tuning both these settings and how to get the best out of it.
