Please suggest AVR + Front speakers for a friend.

Hi,

A friend of mine has a budget of around 80K, for an AVR + 2 Speakers. He'll add the center, surrounds and sub later on. He'll buy the speakers locally (mumbai). But he can source the avr from SG or US if its significantly cheaper.

He is quite a bass head, mainly into hip-hop, trance, and dance music. Not really interested in velvety mids and smooth highs.

For the AVR, one with HDMI switching would be better. He's got a PS3, and will be adding a HD-DVD drive later on.

So, bring on the suggestions

Ohh and his room is 12x15.

In that price bracket, I would recommend the Marantz sr 5001 (hdmi switching) with either the Tannoy Mercury F4 or the Mission M34i.

He is now thinking of getting a sr7001 from the US. Its about $1300. Which speakers would you recommend? Budget for speakers 40-50K.

Please inform me of some more speakers around 40-45K, available in mumbai, which are good for trance/hip hop, and which would work well with a marantz sr7001.

Monitor Audio RS6 at about 55k and Dali Ikon 6 at about 72k.

These will cater well to the genres of music mentioned by you.

BTW, do you think his spending $1,200 - $1,300 on the AVR is a good idea? Or should he get a lower model and spend more on speakers? What would be an ideal distribution? He said he can stretch till 1lac, and I guess he'll need around 10k for cables and a dvd player. So that leaves 90k.

Tannoy F4 is about 35k and the Mission is about 31k.

Both Marantz and Nad av receivers are better in stereo when compared to the likes of Yamaha, Denon & Onkyo.

With the Sr 7001 i feel the Tannoy or Mission is just fine.

Ask your friend to invest in a good dvd player, again either from Marantz or Nad.
Or he can opt for an entry level dvd player from Pioneer and buy an entry level cd player from Nad or Marantz.

Some probing revealed his final plan. Right now, he can spend 1L on avr and Fronts. After 6-8 months, he'll get 2 - 2.5K for center,rear, sub and the LCD. The LCD should be between 1 - 1.5L i guess. So that leaves around 1L for the other speakers and the sub.

I thought this should be taken into account while planning.

Where are the various listening rooms for speakers in Mumbai? (near Bandra). I know ProFX does Polk and KEF. What about Tannoy, Monitor Audio, Klipsch, Mission, Dali ?

Ask him to source the speakers from US. See if he can get the Def Tech Power monitors..forget the model but its about 750 to 800 a pair. Also he could get a Pro AC center for about 600$

Electronics better off in Singapore due to mains compatibility.

Getting speakers from abroad is very difficult. He can only get the AVR from there.

And why a proac center for the deftechs? Isn't there a center in the powermonitor series?

There is. But i think the weight will be too much.
Each of these Def Techs have an inbuilt active sub(Yes!. Including the center).

If your friend brings a receiver from US then he will have to buy a pretty big transformer probably which will set him back by 5 to 6 thousand Rs.

Ask him to cehck out Anthem, B&K and Sunfire HT grand receivers.
I don't know about HDMI though. He might want to google it out.

Spending $1300 on AVR is not a very good investment as the gain over the SR-5001 wont be much.

For speakers in 40-45k for hip-hop, trance...three speakers come to my mind immediately

1. Athena ASF-2.2
2. Polk Audio Monitor-70 (31k)
3. Polk Audio RTI-10 (45k)

All three are available in Mumbai...The Athena should be interesting. All of them are easy to drive as well.

Ok, now he's thinking of waiting till year end for the hdmi 1.3a AVRs

I told him to go around auditioning speakers till then.

The new range of Onkyo av receivers are hdmi v1.3a.
Also, the new Denon avr 3808 is also v1.3a.
