Hi,
I recently picked up a couple of CDs featuring the works of the Estonian composer Arvo Part.

The first is a collection of his symphonic work featuring,
Tabula Rasa, Collage Uber Bach and Symphony no.3.

The other is a collection of choral pieces including the Berliner Messe, Magnificat and Summa.

I'm really liking this guy.

Could any of you recommend some more stuff that I can pick up.

Cheers

O.K, first the easy bit.I picked up these CDs from Rhythm House in Mumbai.

The Music...well I'm not 'educated' enough about Western Classical Music to be able to comment in an erudite fashion

However here is what I think- Contemplative,Deep and Emotional are the words that come to mind when I listen t his music and unlike say a Philip Glass, his compositions are more accessable (??) to the ear. It seems not very removed in form and structure from the older classics (I think, but I could be wrong ).

In sum it sounds new and yet somehow familiar.

I hope that you are able to make sense of this

Cheers

Hi Krish,

I have two recordings of the music of Arvo Part, on LP though:

Tabula Rasa ECM1275
Arbos ECM1325

Both are excellent. Contemporary minimalist compositions, extracting complexicity from simplicity. His choral works are entrancing to listen to.

Hi Krish !

Can you mention the exact name of the albums and recording company, etc.? And can you rate them on a scale of 1 to 5?

Doctorsaab,
The label is Naxos and here is what is says on the spine:

Part:Berliner Messe 8.557299
Part:Orchestral Works 8.554591

Dunno about the scale doc, the more I listen to the music the more entranced I become.

Hi Krish, Viren, Doc
Thanks for the ref. Contemporary classical is new to me too. The only chap I have really heard is Gorecki, and he died last century. Is he like Gorecki, if so then I would not really call him modern.
When I said what is he like, I meant whether you could put him in some kind of style or type. Like is he like Shostokovich, or Mahler or something. Maybe Sibelius or Smetana would be musically ( and geographically)closer. In any case he if is not like Phillip Glass then its probably good news.

Hi Purnendu,Doc,Viren,

Check out this site for more info on Arvo Part
www.arvopart.info

You know Arvo Part is quite contemporary. In fact he began composing some time in the late fifties.

To my mind, at the risk of sounding presumptious, I'd say this is great Western Classical Fusion, a contemporary interpretation of a traditional form.

Another observation is that a lot of his work is deeply spiritual and meditative.

I'm on the look out for two of his more recent works - I'm the vine and Lamante, which are supposed to be awesome.

Do let me know you think, if you have have the chance to lsten to some of his stuff.I think the website has some MP3 samples.

Cheers
