Thanks friends for liking the picture !

Photography is my other passion and I have been playing with the cameras for last 12 years, therefore, I know a thing or two.

Yes, no flash was used for indoor shots. I used spot metering on the artists to get correct exposure.

You may like to see more photos at:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdhawan/

Although there were speaker arrays & some microphones suspended in the air & some directed towards the audience too, but what I could hear was only the direct sound. Great acoustics.

Doc, the snaps on that site are fabulous. They look very much professional. It seems your abilities as a photographer may just be better than your 'listening' !!!!
No sir, just kidding. The pictures are just great !

Very Very well done.
I do not know anything about photography, but even to a lay man it looks impressive. Like a profession job after the PhotoShop session.

Enjoyable Evenings.

I was there for both the days.

The 1st days first session was rather poor.
I guess the orchestra was just not able to play as 1.
However the 2nd session on day 1 was great.
Besides, I also managed to change my seats, 8th row right behind the conductor.

The 2nd day too was lovely, in fact the orchestra played rather well. The Viola soloist [his name I cannot remember] in Mozart's K 364 [I think] was exceptional.
My seats on the 2nd day were great too. 5th row, again behind the conductor.

We got 2 Encores on the 1st day & only 1 on the 2nd.

Many forum members attended the concerts [both days] so I guess there could be some input from their end too.

I almost forgot, the concerts were sponsored by Cadence + Siltech + Crystal Cable. I did not know that until I got to the venue & purchased the days programme. The names were printed at the back.

All Cadence Product Lovers should have come; if not for the music, just to support the brand etc. etc.

What a PITY.

SHODDY marketing / PR by CADENCE

Let me guess... the Cadence message on the days program, did not even give a website or any other contact, where a serious music lover can contact to find out more about Cadence or buy their products.

After spending that money, they should have circulated the info, on Forums like this.... or ATLEAST informed their dealers in an E-Mail.

I know that the To-Be CADENCE dealer in Mumbai IS an ACTIVE forum member, and even HE Did Not Know ????

I attended the show here in Bangalore. Here in Bangalore it was a 1 day show. I got a seat in the 10th row, slightly to the left of the conductor.
I am very new to this genre of music. In fact I wouldnt have spent more than 2 hours if I add up my entire listening time to Western classical music. So it was almost like listening to something very new.

The sight of so many well dressed musicians with some awesome instruments in hands was simply mesmarizing.
The first half of the show was live unamplified (at least I was hearing everything direct). They played something called Mendelsohn (I dont remember..please excuse me ) and then a act from Bach.
All the while I was enjoying the sweetness of direct instruments and it was superb. Though it was not too loud..but the timing and the sound of 20 violins at a time was WOAH!!!! .

The second half was not as exciting as they connected microphone and this time I was hearing most of the sounds from the speaker. Though it was a decent speaker (not regular PA stuff) but still the difference was starkly apparent. The sweetness was gone by around 70%. It was more like Hifi . But still I was tried to get over it and enjoy the performance.

Later an eminent Violinist Dr.L.Balasubramanium along with his Hindustani classical team joined in and there was a nice Jugalbandi between the Hindustani and Western Classical. I enjoyed it .

Nice evening...extreme value for money. dont know if I would get another chance like this

Dear A.N.

You are a lucky fellow.

You got a chance to listen to Dr. L. Subranamium.
He is a living Legend. I have many of his CD's.
The most famous is with Stephen Grappelli [Sorry for my spelling] & it is called 'Conversations'
This is a Must Have CD.
How I wish he played in Mumba too.

I must suggest that you try and attend as many live audio shows as possible. It will give you a very good idea of what we are trying to achive at home.

I asked A.S. [Owner] about that & he laughed it off saying that who ever wanted to know about Cadence, already did & thet this would not help !!! I was amazed by the answer to say the least !!

After spending that money, they should have circulated the info, on Forums like this.... or ATLEAST informed their dealers in an E-Mail.

So true !!

Correct, he got to know @ 1430 on the same day & he had calledme up to ask if I needed any invites [kind of him] but I had already got mine for both the days well in advance.

There is another concert here in Bangalore on 5th August. The artists are Jagjit Singh and Ghulam Ali. But its in a open space (Palace grounds) so it would be a hardcore PA performance but still I like both these artists so was wondering if its worth going there.

Dr L Balasubramanian in Banglore & 2 day concert in Bombay ....... Delhi always gets left behind in the music scene ....

Abhi - experience of live music unique and the quest in HiFi to get as close to live as possible. Imagine hearing a full orchestra with 100 instruments being played together - my experience at Berlin was mind-blowing.

Hi Doc,
Frankly speaking, after listening live unamplified music I have almost stopped thinking of reproducing it at home .
I am now thinking of enjoying the most colourful sound possible as then I dont think of matching it to something else. Rather, just believe that this is my toy at home to play around and enjoy. "Live" is another event, another "kind" of entertainment...comparisons will only make you unhappy .
Really I am strongly thinking in these lines...trying to reproduce "live" thing at home is like asking BigB to come and redo "Sharabi" at my home .

I clearly remember many moons ago when I used to keep on harping about the experience of live instruments and believability, and its relation to audio playback, I came under much flak. Good to see things changing. Now here is the interesting point, how many so called audio industry gurus truly understand what this is all about, that they go about trading in brand names, and are not able to acheive the full potential of the gear sold to the consumer. Therefore dear members, when you do purchase on XYZ chap recommending, or reviews you read, remember the most important aspect is how good is that dealer in extracting the finest even out of a 50K budget.

Hey Bhagwan !

Thanks for that warning.... seems its a Soprano performance, and not classical music that I originally thought.

I had an invite, and I have just opted out.

Easier ways to shatter concrete & glass ( eardrums too ! )

Jest kidding

LIVE TOO HARSH FOR HI FI ?

Guys, Classical is just not up my street, but whenever ( VERY few times I admit ) I have heard violins in a live, performance, they DO have a "Steely" edge ... which is typically frowoned upon if reproduced by a Hi Fi System... most term such a system as "Harsh"

Similar for the "Harsh Raspiness" that I seem to hear in Brass wind instruments used in Jazz.... ( again not intrinsically my fav genre )

Would appreciate comments from others, on this aspect.

AN....
funny you should say that....sometimes when systems try and reproduce close to what a real instrument plays...its frowed upon...and yet some of the same lot go after neutrality and natural timbre...heh heh.....funny isnt it ? which just means some of them just cant recognise authenticity when they hears it Maybe becuase they have never been to a live unamplified performance.

Kya bolega amp nut.....make your system sound like what you want...and enjoy ! Want to have live or near live experience ? go to a concert ! Simple.

BTW NCPA is a nice concert hall to experience classical music...wish I could hear a jazz big band play there unamplified.....awesome ! awesome !

Ampnut ji , IMHO, your observation regarding the violins and other acoustic instruments un-amplified is right.

Recorded music when reproduced will have a lot of limitations and they are far from real in true sense.

Do you think people will like to hear the Steel wires being rubbed by the rosin dipped Bow ? Poor chap who plays the violin

What about the thwack of a kettle drum ?

I think we all want to be a in a safe zone, so to over come this lack of realism some prefer to get a rosy glossy sound from their Hifi. A kind of compromise that lets one know when a steel guitar or nylon string is being played, and such system is classified by some as neutral.

In short hifi is part imagination

you are one brave audiophile to denounce both classical and Jazz

but as a secret confession i too belong to your and Abhis group..for me "Like Live" is not an obsession.. I like my music to be warmish and nice and fuzzy sounding...violins to be golden sounding ie While I would appreciate a violin having a bite in a system clinically, i enjoy it only when it is flowing ;).

Actually my test for violin is Winter-Largo from 4 seasons. if that sounds musical, that system does it for me on violins!

I do dabble in Jazz and western classical, but that is not what turns me on. my heart is still "Rocking" and since my audiophilic inclinations were unearthed, I have developed a love for Fusion , Indian classical instrumentals and world music. I have added female vocals also to my likes.

Some women look beautiful in their natural looks while others look good when they are heavily decked up.

I won't argue as to who is the real beauty here. I will humbly submit - exercise your choice - "live" or "decked up" !!!!

Sopranos? Listen to a good one without prejudice, you might fall flat if you concetrate on the skill & voice control. Yes, as an initial impression they may sound "shrill".

Hello All...

I was there on Saturday. The Yamaha Grand Piano was tuned to sound the most brilliant of all I have ever heard at the Tata Theater. Just hearing that instrument in all its glory with its reverb filling the thousand seater auditorium with consumate ease made your heart cry out, eyes moist with gratitude. Mr. Stefan Blunier who is a Conductor could easily give a solo piano performance on any world stage. Nicola Beller Carbone sang out with a voice filled with joy and sorrow and mischief and love and deceit. Her voice fluctuating with the required emotions of the Arias. (Yes, in many ways, Operas are very much like Bollywood films). Needless to say, it was breathtaking... and to top it all... it was for free. Looking forward to the next performance. A Good day wished to you all.
