The 2015 SACD edition of Amused to Death features a new 5.1 surround remix of the album completed by longtime Roger Waters / Pink Floyd collaborator and co-producer, James Guthrie. The artwork has been updated for 2015 by Sean Evans, the creative director of Waters' 2010-2013 "The Wall Live" tour and movie.

The situation now is that the licensor (RCA/Legacy/Sony) has stepped in and is now doing we thought the licensee (Analogue Productions) was going to do. Sony will issue a CD edition, a CD+Blu-ray edition with the James Guthrie 5.1 mix and there will be two double vinyl editions: a 2LP black vinyl and a 2LP limited picture disc.

However the SACD will still be issued (details to be confirmed) and Sony/Legacy have collaborated with Analogue Productions/Acoustic Sounds in the US on this, and the release of the 2LP 200 gram vinyl which will be pressed on 200g vinyl at Quality Record Pressing (owned by Analogue Productions).

Acoustic Sounds:

AMUSED TO DEATH

PROJECT NOTES

With AMUSED TO DEATH, Roger Waters painted a picture of a society serenely tethered to its televisions and increasingly untethered to the realities of an unjust world. Like most of Waters work, it is a concept-driven album that revisits themes and characters throughout its 14 songs. At its core, Amused to Death is a timeless reflection on the potential dangers of human excess – whether it’s consumerism, war, religion, or the vapidity of the 24-hour news cycle – all inching us closer to becoming “amused to death.”

Amused to Death was inspired by Neil Postman’s seminal critique Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business. Postman argued that electronic media had transformed all information, including news, into entertainment. In such an image-driven culture, he warned, people were less likely to give close thought to matters of real significance. “Postman talked about a propaganda machine so powerful human intellect couldn’t resist it,” Waters remarks. “Given all the distractions that there are in modern life, it is very easy to take our eye off the ball.”

When Amused to Death was originally released, television was king and the digital age was in its infancy. Today, of course, we have an ever-growing menu of potential amusements at our fingertips, while circumstances in the world have grown darker and more dangerous. There are lyrics on Amused to Death that could easily describe recent events. “The Bravery of Being Out of Range” refers to “laser-guided bombs” that “hit the target/and win the game/from bars 3,000 miles away.” Though written in the wake of the first Gulf War, the song stings in this era of drone strikes. Comments Waters, “Now that we have drones, I think that song is even more sinister.”

Amused to Death is a record that rewards close listening, for its sound no less than its lyrical content. The songs are richly layered; sound effects course beneath vocals, instruments, orchestras. The diverse elements work together to enrich meaning and pure musical pleasure.

Waters was joined by a stellar lineup of musicians, including guitar legend Jeff Beck, featured on seven songs. “Jeff was hugely important to the making of the record, and it was one of the peaks of my musical life,” says Waters. “To have him sitting in my billiard room playing harmonics and then playing the melody on the whammy bar – which he does all the way through the first song, ‘The Ballad of Bill Hubbard’– it was absolutely extraordinary.”

All the album’s nuances come through clear as a bell in the 5.1 surround mix and re-mastered stereo mix by James Guthrie, who mixed the original release and has worked with Waters since Pink Floyd’s The Wall (1979). The restoration was no small task, given the fact that Amused to Death was written and recorded over a period of nearly five years, using three different formats (one analog, two digital). Guthrie traveled to London to track down the original masters – and found hundreds, with multiple takes of the same song in different formats. He essentially had to rebuild the album before he could begin working on its sound.

The effort was well worth it, says Guthrie. “This is such a rich album, conceptually and musically. You have Jeff Beck playing on eight songs. Duets with Don Henley, P.P. Arnold and Rita Coolidge. Orchestral arrangements by Michael Kamen. And you have Roger at his best, writing and singing his arse off. In my opinion, this album contains some of Roger’s finest work.”

Continuing his collaboration with Waters that dates back to 2005, visual artist/filmmaker Sean Evans created new gatefold and cover art for the re-release. For the gatefold, Evans sourced news footage and photographs from AP, and then used digital tools to achieve the effect of distressed, low-bit images. “The artwork is meant to complement the lyrics,” Evans explains. “We never identify where the images are taken from, but you get a sense of ‘Something’s not right. We’re doing something wrong.’”

The new cover art for Amused to Death focuses on a little boy bathed in the glow of a giant TV screen, reflecting the sense of urgency Waters feels about the album’s themes. “In terms of the way we educate young people, I fear we are encouraging our society to amuse itself to death at a greater rate than we ever were,” he comments. “What if we spent on the education the money we spend on building weapons? What if children were asked not prepare themselves for lives as consumers and producers, but to prepare themselves to become adults who think about things, who have open minds, and care about the rights of the human being? Can you imagine what the world might be like?”

Amazon UK:
"The vocal on The Wrong Band mid word goes from perfect to muffled - it sounds as if somebody knocked an EQ fader out. This remains for through the next track, The Waitress. Then the wrong Upside Down live track is used in the bonus tracks, not even from the UTP era."

Stellungsnahme von Rhino:
It was a mistake in the mastering process that somehow eluded those who do the quality checks to ensure that all the music goes out into the world in the most excellent way. We will be rectifying the audio issue both with the customers as well as with the product that goes out to shops (which includes digital). We just need a bit of time to get everything in place and then we’ll be able to confirm the plans with you all.

One remix project completed some time ago which is planned for issue later this year, is the classic 1972 debut album by Roxy Music. To preview a deluxe set, Universal Music Group recently released 2 of the tracks on 10 inch vinyl for Record Store Day.

Included were my mixes of a previously unheard full length version of Ladytron (running about 3 minutes longer than the original version) and The Numberer, which was the original B-side to Virginia Plain. The whole album and the A+B sides of the single will also be included on the deluxe edition mixed into 5.1 surround sound.

I always prefer to work closely with the artist on these projects, and in this case it was the band’s original guitar player Phil Manzanera who oversaw and approved the remixes.

Remixes expected to be released this year, but yet to be scheduled are; Roxy Music's first album, XTC “Oranges and Lemons”, 2 of Steve Hackett’s early Charisma albums, King Crimson “Beat”, another album from the Yes (official) catalogue, and perhaps one or two others

"Speaking of dynamics, those who are tired of the recent Volume Wars (google it) may be well-pleased at the almost total lack of limiting done to these mixes. I chose Dean Phelps, a very skilled and sensitive mastering engineer for this project, as he feels as I do. YES played with huge dynamics, it’s one of the greatest features of progressive music. We realized these tracks are not likely to be on Shuffle Play next to Katy Perry, and therefore no need to compete for volume; we wanted wider dynamics to rival the best of classical recordings. Live YES is perfect for that. When you do hear this music in full range, please let us know if you like it – we think you will. It could be the beginning of a movement back to full range audio." ... Was für Freunde von Steve Hackett

Universal Music Group have announced a 14 disc Steve Hackett box set for October release called Premonitions, that will cover his time with Charisma Records between 1975-83, including the first 4 albums in newly created 5.1 surround sound versions.

Unfortunately I was only able to remix 2 of these into discrete surround since the multitrack tapes for the other 2 albums could not be located, so instead I created surround sound upmixes from the stereo masters using Penteo Surround software (which nevertheless came out sounding very immersive and worthwhile). All of the remixing was supervised and approved by Steve. More news and confirmation of contents soon I hope.

DAVID BOWIE
FIVE YEARS 1969 – 1973

The first in a series of David Bowie Box Sets to be released on September 25th.

June 23rd 2015 London

On this day in 1971, David Bowie performed for the first time at what was then known as the ‘Glastonbury Fair’. Today in 2015 as the Glastonbury Festival approaches once more, Parlophone Records are proud to announce DAVID BOWIE FIVE YEARS 1969 – 1973, the first in a series of box sets spanning his career.

The ten album / twelve CD box, ten album / thirteen-piece vinyl set and digital download featurs all of the material officially released by Bowie during the nascent stage of his career from 1969 to 1973. All of the formats include tracks that have never before appeared on CD/digitally as well as new remasters.

Exclusive to the box sets will be Re:Call 1, a new 2-disc compilation of non-album singles, single versions & B-sides. It features a previously unreleased single edit of All The Madmen, which was originally set for a US release but was never actually issued. Also included is the original version of Holy Holy, which was only ever released on the original 1971 Mercury single and hasn’t been available on any official release since.

Also exclusive to all versions of Five Years 1969 – 1973 will be a 2003 stereo remix of ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars’ by the album’s original co-producer, Ken Scott, previously only available on DVD with the LP/DVD format of the 40th anniversary edition of the album.

The vinyl box set has the same content as the CD set pressed on audiophile quality 180g vinyl.

The box set’s accompanying book, 128 pages in the CD box and 84 in the vinyl set, will feature rarely seen photos as well as technical notes about each album from producers Tony Visconti and Ken Scott, an original press review for each album and a short foreword by legendary Kinks front man Ray Davies.

The CD box set will include faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the original albums and the CDs will be gold rather than the usual silver.

An alternate cover has been created for the 2003 mix of Ziggy Stardust by Ken Scott, which features an outtake from the original Heddon Street photo session. There is also newly originated artwork for Re:Call 1 featuring a 1973 in-studio image from renowned photographer Mick Rock.

Say I´m your Number One - the Stock/Aitken/Waterman Singles

This very special 30-disc CD singles collection celebrates the legacy and phenomenal chart success of the Stock Aitken Waterman songwriting and production team, who provided the pop soundtrack of the late 80s.

Released to mark 30 years since their first UK number one with Dead Or Alive’s You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), this is the first-ever box set devoted to the hitmaking partnership of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman and tells their whole story by bringing together 30 classic releases from 30 different artists. Essential hits such as Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s Especially For You, Bananarama’s Venus and Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up feature alongside sought-after rarities and fan favourites by everyone from cyberpunk fantasy band Sigue Sigue Sputnik to Philly soul sensations the Three Degrees and Motown legend Edwin Starr.

Each remastered CD single in this set is presented in an individual card sleeve replicating classic original vinyl artwork and has been expanded to include 12” mixes, rare B-sides and bonus cuts, with fourteen CDs ‘packjammed’ as special double A-side editions each featuring two classic singles.

Across 30 discs, the complete box set boasts over 250 tracks, many of which are previously unreleased or on CD for the very first time, making this collection a must-have for all SAW fans, collectors and connoisseurs of 80s pop. Housed in an heirloom-quality outer box designed in homage to the gold and silver disc-packed walls of the PWL ‘Hit Factory’, the set also includes a 48-page booklet featuring lyrics, discography, a commentary from Pete Waterman and brand new sleeve notes, plus an exclusive sticker sheet and postcard set.

After teaming up in early 1984, SAW soon scored hits with Divine and Hazell Dean before hitting the top spot with Dead Or Alive at the beginning of 1985. That year also found them penning and producing the bona-fide UK soul classic Say I’m Your Number One for Princess. Momentum continued to build with Bananarama’s Venus topping the US charts in 1986 and SAW pioneering the UK house sound with Mel & Kim, who hit number one with Respectable in early 1987. And from then on, the hits came thick and fast with Samantha Fox, Sinitta, Rick Astley, Kylie, Jason, Sonia and the original queen of disco Donna Summer just a few of the artists to take their tracks to the top end of the charts around the world.

In just over seven years, Stock Aitken Waterman scored over a hundred UK hit singles, including thirteen number ones, before Matt Aitken’s departure from the team in 1991. Their base, Pete Waterman’s PWL production company, studio complex and latterly record label, self-styled as a the ‘British Motown’, was undoubtedly deserving of the ‘Hit Factory’ epithet, but as this collection ably demonstrates, the sheer diversity of SAW’s body of work disproves the myth of a conveyor-belt production line. Beyond the irresistibly instant Hi-NRG-influenced pop for which they are best known, their catalogue is characterised by diversity as much as quality, with their own rare groove smash Roadblock sitting alongside many such ‘lost gems’ as Brilliant’s underrated Love Is War, girlband Boy Krazy’s US hit That’s What Love Can Do and the blissful New York Afternoon featuring Georgie Fame.

A fitting tribute to the most successful and prolific writing and production team in UK chart history, Say I’m Your Number One: The Stock Aitken Waterman Singles Box Set brings together many such fan favourites with more than 20 of their most memorable Top 20 hits, including seven transatlantic chart-toppers.

Porcupine Tree - the Delirium Years

Porcupine Tree - The Delerium Years 1995 - 1997 gathers together two pivotal (double LP) studio releases, along with the breakthrough Coma Divine triple live LP and a four track bonus 12" of previously unreleased material.

All of the audio (pressed on 180g heavyweight vinyl) has been remastered by Steven Wilson over the last three years and comes packaged in a deluxe box with 40 page hardback book containing extensive liner notes and a detailed band history by US journalist, Stephen Humphries.

The box, book and LP packaging is designed by long-term collaborator Carl Glover and features new and previously unseen material alongside the original artwork from the era.

Formed in the late 1980s as a side project (No-Man was Wilson's main band at this point), Porcupine Tree had become a fully-fledged touring group by the mid-1990s. The band's third studio release, 1995's The Sky Moves Sideways, was a landmark album awash with melancholic vocals, hypnotic guitar solos, spacious textures and dynamic instrumental passages, and saw the band shift to a progressive rock sound that would come to define their career.

Signify (1996) built on the advances of The Sky Moves Sideways and firmly established Porcupine Tree as a highly respected force in the emerging mid-1990's Underground scene.

Coma Divine, the live LP of a career-changing sold out show in Rome, appeared in late 1997. Consolidating Porcupine Tree's position as one of the pre-eminent live Rock bands of its age, the album proved that the band were as vital a force in concert as they were in the studio.

These three releases are accompanied by an LP of bonus tracks, including two versions of 'Signify' pressed as a concentric cut - depending on which groove the stylus falls into, you get a different mix.

The Delerium Years is a beautifully presented set chronicling the evolution of one of the UK's brightest talents of the 1990s and 2000s.

Preorder for 27th November release.

Rammstein - Vinyl Box Set

Also gelini71: Bitte weitermachen

Was soll dieses "Meinungen, Erwartungen, Hintergrundinfos" nun genau bedeuten ?
