Hi Folks,

I am planning to buy speaker stands for my MS-902i bookshelves. Honestly, I am looking at the cheapest ones ... I thought of getting it done by a carpenter, (similar design as the ones that Lithos supplies to the studio 1)...but then I wasnt sure how it will turn out to be... Could you recommend some shops that I can get basic speaker stands..?

Also I am on the look out for an active subwoofer.
My budget is 10K max. I have shortlisted the sonodyne roar sub.. any other suggestions?

[PS: I am just back from a demo of a new philips TV...man it rocks...pixel plus 29inches 1080i inputs, etc etc etc...25K.. awesome deal ]

Thanks!

Hi !

Rather than a carpenter, you could ask a mason to build a solid stand with brickwork covered with granite or marbel.

If yuor budget for Sub is 10 K then Sonodyne is perhaps the only option or may be a used sub from another audiophile.

Sonodyne Roarr is a good sub buddy...just see to it that you dont set the gain very high. They should be JUST audible.

Abhi, and the Sonodyne Roarr 1810 is recommended more than the Roarr 2815, right?

2815 is definitely better but at that price point you have many competitors to choose from.

not a bad option IMHO. check out some wooden stands from the web.
get one buit with a hollow column which you can get filled with sand to make heavy as well as dampen it.

Drsaabs suggestion on masonry is technically the best only problem is its portabilty

Please buy the heaviest stands you can afford..you will be surprised at the difference...you might even decide to forgo the sub because of the bass improvement! I'm not kidding.

Thanks for the inputs...
Yes, one thing I realized is the importance of stands... I kept the speakers temporarily on a shelf...man it sounded terrible... I almost regretted my decision of going for those speakers... A basic stand changed the scenario...

I have a granite slab lying useles... I guess its time to put it to use and make a solid one... will keep you all posted on how it turns out...

kvish...if u r in bangalore...check out Mr. Murthy...he makes some rock solid stands...also find out if you can get atacama stands somewhere in ur city and cadence speaker stands...

on the sub front...at that price point...go for sonodyne...but do u want a sub for a stereo system or for a HT setup?

Can you give me the contact details of Mr Murthy? Any specific model that I should ask him abt? Also what is the approximate price range for the stands he offers?

Thanks !!

The idea of buying a sub is to build a complete HT...
The path I am choosing is a 2.0 -> 2.1 -> 5.1 (seems far off now )

I have PMed you his contact details. Mr. Murthy is a senior audiophile, you can tell him your setup and budget and he can suggest you something that fits. He gets the stands made to order so it may take a couple of weeks before you get your hands on them.

...just a thought...

Have you heard the MS subs? Since you are aiming for a 5.1 setup, it would be a good idea to get all speakers from the same family. Try the MS 309...I have just heard it once, so can't comment on its performance, dunno its price either.

Regarding the MS309, I heard them, they are good...but cost abt 19K which is way over my budget.
Moreover, the sonodyne subs are terrific VFM... For that price range its hard to get more...

I am planning to go for the center channel of the same series.
Surround and sub, I will do some experimenting

Hey kvish,

whats ur setup ??

even i am planning get the center from the sonus stable. and for surrounds may be Cinque m1's or mordaunt Short 902i (i was quoted 10K pair) i think they are better VFM than sonus 1506.

what do u say.

Actually I have cambridge audio 540r receiver and MS902i bookshelves. I am using pioneer dvp 588a as the source.

Currently on my wishlist is a philips 29 inch TV and a sonodyne subwoofer...
I would be going in for center channel from MS unless I decide to go in for Sonus floorstanders (in my current situation, I need to win a lottery for it!! ) in which case I will buy sonus center...

You were quoted 10K for 902i's? man thats too good.... I paid 12K just a couple of months back..

Actually these prices were given at the AVExpo by the dealer but they said this the actual price of the product.

now i just have to make sure that it was the MS-902i or the MS-902.

Hi Kvish,

I have made stands for my speakers using Cuddapa stone. These are one inch thick and have a height of 11 inches since my speakers are mid way between floor standers and bookshelfs. I required the tweeter at ear level and the image is excellent.

They are rock solid and weigh a lot ! I have to put in a great deal of effort to shift them around the floor for cleaning etc.. Lifting them up is impossible unless you happen to be a body builder !

The cost worked out to be below Rs.500/- and it was well worth the effort. Since you have granite slabs you may substitute that too.

Hi Neono,

Its quite simple. Measure the base dimensions of the speaker and have 2 Cuddapa stones cut for that dimension, one for the bottom and the other for the base where the speaker rests. Determine the height you want, subtract 2 inches from that height since each Cuddapa is 1 inch thick, and have 3 pieces cut for that height. Now stick those 3 vertical pieces to the 2 you've cut for the speaker base with Araldite and masonary glue (green colour). Let it dry for a day and you're done.

You could also substitute marble or granite but I am not sure if marble sheets could be 1 inch thick. If you want a photograph of the stands PM me your email ID and I will send it to you.

Regards.

Behram.

Thanks behram,

The stand looks great. I think now anybody can make one for their speakers if they are looking for a cheap solution. Good effort. Moving might be a pain in the back.

Just wanted to ask one thing. The purpose of making this stand was it just to increase the height of the speaker ???

regards - Sunil
