Hi all,
I auditioned the SW diamond 150 sub recently. Has anyone heard these subwoofers. The price is really quite attractive. The sound with the the diamond satelittes was also impressive although not a patch on the quad sub sat which was also there. I have not yet auditioned them with my own proac tablettes. Pricewise they would be a complete mismatch, however the matching Proac sub costs an arm and a leg. But you never know the budget wonder might work. Has anyone heard this wharfedale sub. Reviews are favourable. Right now I am having to blast my system to get any bass at all. This is creating domestic problems, and I too am not so keen on high volume listening. Will I compromise my sound quality by bringing in a lower quality sub or should I give it a try.In a nut shell has anyone tried this i.e., modest sub with quality main speakers. Please give me some feed back

purnendu, if you have Proac speakers then you need a much much better sub to go along with it.

ideally the Rels and even the newer Quad subs are OK (But I would really only recommend the REL or even if you can get hold of a MJ acoustics one)

Wharfedales subs are very very much entry level HT offerings and in these cases no bass is really better than bad bass ;0 (All IMHO of course)

Since Tonality is more or less non existant below 100 hz (To mos average ears anyway) having a different brand sub should not be an issue (Usually it is the ease of integration which might make them attractive)

The REL stampede entry level starts at around 55K...

Thanks for the replies,
More or less what I thought. The diamond sw could muck it up.
In matter fact I have been having a long running problem with the low frequencies. The Tablettles are hard to drive and the Lyrita Integra does not have enough grunt and starts distorting if I turn up the vol. So recently after extensive audition and back and forth I have gone in for the audio Analogue Cento vt amplifier, rated at 100 watts, while retaining the valve integre for quieter listening. The added power has made a lot of difference to the low frequency performance, and it matches the Tablettes rather well otherwise. However it has cost a decent packet and I cant possibly go in for an expensive sub for the next year at least. The Diamond sub is only Rs. 18000, and I was rather tempted. I will probably audition it at home some time but may be I should also audition the Quad you speak well of. I wonder if its the same model that I heard at the dealer. At last Jaipur has a proper dealer.
The price of the the Quad is around 70 grand. The Proac should be nearly 1 lakh. So its going to have to wait. Long wait

Purnendu,

If it for a stereo setup, why don't you look at going for a set of speakers with a better bass response rather than going for a sub? Say the Totem Rainmaker or a floorstander...

Hi SF,
I doubt if I can upgrade the speakers easily without losing a good deal of money. Also the Proac pair is less than a year old, and I do like them. The sound is quite balanced and controlled even a loud volumes, and the human voice is most natural. The high freqs are all there, and much less gritty than in some other systems I have heard. I am quite happy with my system now, the only thing really missing is a solid bass foundation. A larger speaker of lesser qualty might bring some heaviness into the human voice. My system ( although it is an entry level system) has come to a point of balance where any change will have to be done with a lot of care, and only if there is loads of cash to spare. I would have to go to a Proac D15 lets say to get what you are suggesting, and that is much much more expensive. Thanks for the suggestion all the same. Should I get get an opportunity I would certainly try out my system with a pair of larger quality speakers.

If you have a budget constraint And you need SPL below 45 Hz, then a sub and a bookshelf is definitely the better option from getting more value for money..floorstanders doing that well cost an arm/leg more

the pitfall is that integerating a sub into your room is much much tougher and akes time..but if done well it can be really good.
