Hi All,

I am new to this forum and I am planning to setup a home theater in my home. My interests are (Music/Movie) is (70/30) and I more like on deep bass. So guys please suggest me good receiver and speakers and my budget is about 60K.
Even I have almost visited all the shops in Bangalore and their cost is too much higher.
(Marantz, Denon, Onkyo, HK, JBL, Yamaha, Bostan, Wharfedale, Sony, Pioneer & many) all the midrange receivers are starting from 30K.
So forced to go for Yamaha- RX-V659 and its cost around 29K but most of them are telling that Yamaha is a low end receivers. So please suggest me a good receiver for Audio & Video around 30K.

One another a thing is one of my friend is coming from Singapore by next month, so I can ask him to buy a receiver from there. Please suggest me an good receiver and let me know the shops where I can get the good deals in Singapore for AV products.

Awaiting for your valuable suggestion and information.

Thanks
Naveen

60k is a difficult budget to get a decent system for both movies and music. But if it has to be 60k then this will be my combo:

1. Marantz SR 4500/4600 (which ever is available): 25k
2. Wharfdale SW-150 sub: 18k
3. Sonodyne Genie-1 sattelites 5 pieces: 17k

Total price: 60k

for 60 K the Sonodyne packages might be good.

maybe you can get in touch with sivat (in this forum) he seems to have some good HT packages as well

If you are a music guy and want the movie option.
My suggestion:
Get your friend to pick up a NAD AV Receiver from Singapore. I don’t know the current models. They are all pretty good with music. You may need to do some research on the models though.
Pick up the best pair of bookshelf speakers / subwoofer combo you can afford now.

Nad receiver – 30k.
Bookshelf speakers stereo pair. – 13k (wharfedale 9.1 or morduant short 902i )
Stands – 5k.
Subwoofer – 20k.

This will take to around 70k with all cables thrown in………..
Enjoy movies like this in stereo for a while and pick up centre and surround speakers when more money becomes available.

All sub / satellite systems sound horrid with music.

I bought a reciever last year from Singapore. The cambridge audio 540r (v2) for around 19500 (should be much lesser now). I checked out both Marantz 4400 and the cambridge audio, and I liked the cambridge audio better. Do check out the other options too... cambridge audio is low on features compared to the rest, I liked the sound quality and I am not too much into features, so I was ok with it. I still have a 2.1 setup, so I cannot comment on the 5.1 outputs, but it is really good for music. Denon is very popular in Singapore, so they quote higher prices...Marantz is very cheap, I found Marantz for 14K.

I bought the receiver in Sim Lim square. There is one shop on the right in the ground floor..(infact its at the entrance itself, I forgot the name!!).

Oh how I could I forget this, the other day I checked out a Cambridge Audio Azur 540R reciever and I was literally blown away. It easily beats the Marantz. The tonality was so good that I felt I am listening to a couple of good stereo amps connected in 5.1 mode. Almost the best reciever I have heard at the entry and mid level. Yamaha, Denons, Onkyo, Pioneer all sucks in comparision. Even Marantz is far off IMO. I was fortunate enough to listen to this AVR with a 5.1 setup consisting of all Dynaudios speakers except for the sub which was a Dali. I couldnt be happier.

This is pretty much my opinion.
I ( i mean 'I' so don't shoot me Abhi )would stay away from sonodyne and all its products.

For 45k you get the 5.1 setup from Defnitive Technology, the PRoCinema Series 100 which sings rings around the sonodyne.

Alternatively, you could go with the wharfedale bookshelves all around with matching center and the Defnitive Tech Prosub 100 subwoofer which would probably be the best in your budget.
25k for the speakers, 25k for the sub and i guess about 15 to 20k for the receiver.
A very good 'beginner' system.
WOuld also look at the Tannoy mercury series of bookshelves(if you are more into Rock, trance, metal and pop)

Cheers,
Saachi

Oh I wont shoot you so soon..
But all I suggest Naveen is to go ahead and listen to these products, compare them against each other and buy the best sounding product.

There is a new Denon AVR (5107 I think) which is pretty good is costs around 24K. With this you could go for the Sonodyne Genie or the KEF eggs...ProFx has a set for around 45K I guess...this may overshoot your budget a bit though...

You can also try Sanen, its an Indian brand and is available with Music Ranch in Jayanagar...

Shahrukh's Marantz would also be a good option...

Else try a HTIB...there are a few good ones from Sony and Philips...

What was the dynaudio speaker which you listened to? (price?) I am compiling a small list of speakers which would be compatible with the cambridge audio receiver. (for my future upgrades/auditions )

I have the Mordaunt short 902i currently. The midrange and highs are really good, but bass department feels left out because of the size of my room (22x11) So I am looking at slightly bass heavy ones for my next purchase....!!!

Best bass i heard in an HT was at The AUdio People.
THey were running dual 12 inch Klipsch REference subs with a CArver Bass management system and Klipsch reference speakers all around, amplification was the Carver Ultimate Receiver.
Hands down the best HT i have come across so far, especially in bass impact and wow factor.

All you need is a good Sub(s) if you get a pair of 10" with one in each corner..all bass needs will be satisfied !

Hi Naveen,
Best thing for you to do would be to visit as many shops and possible and listen to them. Use your own reference CDs so u can judge.

WIthing 60K i'd suggest the Marantz and the Wharfedales..but in the end you will hve to like what you hear.
