Stand for floorstander

Friends,

I own a standard height floorstander - Dali Concept 6. I have placed it in the living room, which is quite large. However, due to lot of furniture in the room, I had to compromise on the placement. Left speaker has lot of air to breathe, nothing in front; the right speaker is placed behind a sofa - the right side of a sofa. As a result, the sound is not balanced. However, I cannot have a better place to place them, unless I move to a bigger house.

So, I have decided to increase the height of speakers and have ordered a pair of marble stands (actually they would be like boxes) of 1'W * 1'D * 6"H.

I have asked the dealer, and he advised me use granite/ marble as stands.

This should remove the imbalances as then the lower driver of the right speaker will not be blocked by the sofa.

What do you think of this?

Very good solution. It will work. I have done something similar. I got a 2inch granite slab done and fixed 3 inch solid threadable metal spikes under them. Six inch slabs can be quite heavy but great if you can manage them. I got spikes done by Murthy in Bangalore.

I am confused;
Your speakers are raised up by 6" is that correct ?
Please do help me to understand what you have done first, before I may suggest anything !!
Are you living in Bombay ? Is a home visit possible ? I may be in a position to give you some suggestions.

Kousik_s most speakers have a recommended height based on dispersion ie tweeters ear level for some..woofers for some and for some some place in between.

If you are changing the height from the above recommended then you also need to change the angle of the speaker by tilting them slightly downwards or else any phase alignment goes for a toss..

and if the speaker axis is not parallel to the floor, the distance of the sweetspot from the speaker becomes fixed.

i think inviting Bhagwan69 over might be a very good idea

I agree with Arj on this & I feel that Bhagwan69 applied great restraint in his post but I have a gut feeling that he too is on the same page as Arj & myself.

In addition to what Arj wrote, floor-stander speaker's bass response is also defined by the distance of the woofer from the floor. Raise the speaker & you change that bass response for the worse.

In short, you might get yourself in more trouble by raising the speaker ad-hoc.
Who is the ditz dealer who recommended this?

From what you wrote, it seems that you have way too much speaker for your house - you seem to be a prime candidate for a bookshelf speaker!

Sorry bhagwan69, I live in Kolkata. No home visit will be possible.

I have not raised the speakers yet. But will be doing it. I think I have no way out as the woofer driver of the right speaker is being blocked.

As a result, the height of tweeters will change. However, I feel that the tweeters are already below my ear level when I am in my listening position. Hence, raising it by 6" should be OK. And I cannot tilt it downwards practically.

This will be a temporary measure, as I am planning to move to a bigger house within 2 years.

If the experiment does not work, I will use the stands for placing artificial flower vases or some sculptures.
