Hi,

I read in the archives of this forum Manek saying that if you have a bright sounding amp like a Yamaha or an Onkyo you need to match them with speakers which balance that side of the amp and not show its brightness.

I would like to know some recommendations for such speakers.

Currently I have decided on the Yamaha RXV-650.
Yes it is a bit bright, but it has some excellent features for the price and I want to add a mono block power amp for the fronts later(it has all 7.1 preamp outs).

Still not decided on the speakers(only fronts).

mono block for the fronts?? i haven't heard anyone using mono amps for speakers. as far as my knowledge goes they are used only for subwoofers like the one i got in my car.

It can be done. And will sound extra special when playing stereo through the AVR.

benkenobi !
sure monoblocks are used for home speakers for stereo and HT....! but its an expensive exercise...usually the fronts are powered by the monoblocks or a two channel power amp.

Alymangy, the idea is a excellent one but I dont know if your yamaha will do any justice to the monoblocks...You have to be convinced that the yamaha pre-amp section is really very good to justify the investment. A cheaper way could be to buy a good two channel power amp for the fronts and run the rear and centre through the AV recvr. An active sub will have its own amp so no investment there.

Hey Manek, Thanks again.
What would we do without you

But you did not answer my first question, which speakers can I check out so that the brighter side of the Yamaha is balanced/hidden. Please reply.

Monoblocks actually give you better sound a each channel has its own power supplyresulting ins better separations etc etc...BUT also adds up to its own share of problems as well.(Power chords to be matched, footers to be matched, Long Interconnects etc etc)
a stereo power amp, preferably by yamaha and of similiar rating might be a better idea !

But a Pre is equallly important for good sound, and using the Yamaha as a Pre-amp to any monoblock might not really be that great an improvement on sound

Added: Seems like Manek beat me to the Post button

Well. i must say i thought that the mono blocks are usually used only for lower frequencies. i forgot that there are amps like the one from analogue audio which have a full freq response.
my Jbl is a class D monoblock with freq response from 10Hz to 220Hz. hence my stupid comments.
thanks guys, for setting me right.
i must say that would probably be the best setup.
i don't think that even if u buy two monoamps and drive the fraonts only it is probably better to go for a complete seterates system than going for a receiver with preamp outputs.
how about the classic setup where all the channels have dedicated preamps and amps with a single Processor feding the channels.

what would that cost now 4-8 lacs for only the electronics.

benkenobi,
your last sentence is why I am not even thinking about it

Guys, There is a Pulz dual mono block for about 10k. It is rated at 60W at 8ohms. Heard some great things about it. What say?

I have found jamo E800 series speakers to be quite good with brighter amps....infinity could be a decent choice, heybrook(they were entry level with a nice warm sound) etc.

Depends what is available in your city/area.

Why dont you sent us a list if available speaker brands and let us pick ?

Manek, till now for my budget my favs are the wharfedale diamonds 8.4s and 8.2s.

Still waiting to audition the 9s.

How do you think they will match the Yammie?

the wharfedale 9's might do the trick. Though I heard them only briefly for a couple of minutes...they were not bright sounding speakers....but they were paired with cambridge audio electronics so maybe that's why.

Actually… Yamahas are not really considered bright.

HK, certainly.

Also, don’t know which monoblocks you propose to buy, but with an AV receiver as a pre amp, IMHO you sure would be putting a big dent in their performance.

Monoblocs represent a much higher rung in the audio chain. Like, if one already has a very good pre / power combination driving a very good pair of speakers and wants even better clarity, he replaces his power amp with monoblocs. This theoretically results in better detail and resolution, as the separation of channels helps in reducing crosstalk / interference, and gives better cooling. The next (and possibly final) step upwards would be to split the CD player into a transport and a DAC.

Possibly, you mean power amp and not monoblocs.
