Hi Guys,

I am based in Mumbai and having a hard time deciding on the speakers (5.1 package) to buy to go along with my Denon 1804. I will be using them for movies and music both. On one hand I have these expensive international brands (like Jamo, JBL etc) but I can only get a satellite speaker package within my budget (about 50K) and on the other I have Indian brands (Sonodyne, Sanen) of which I can get the towers and bookshelves. I still have to hear the Wharfdale diamonds as people are telling me that they are pretty good & cheap too. I might go for Sanen but since its not a well known brand I am having second thoughts although they did sound pretty decent, anybody else heard them. Please let me know if there are any other speakers that I should get.

bye

The combination i have is as follows,
Marantz cd player
two pulz preamps RS100
two Pulz dual Mono amplifiers (RS250, 60 watts rms each)
Customized speakers set from pandam.

the reason i took a pair of pre-amps and amplifiers is coz i'm driving one to my pair of main speakers and the other to my subs- some may say better go for a active one..but i would say..trust your ears and feel the bass move through you !

it's one hell of a "traditional" rack! i'm no rich guy so am looking to build my system step by step. next on my list would be a 31+31 behringer EQ.

BTW pandam has good satellite speakers as well, they come for 7000 a pair.you'll be amazed by the clarity and punch it offers. listen to this and try compare this with the boses and he JBls. you'll be amazed.

Clarity is often mistaken with brightness which is due to a bump in the higher freq and Punch due to a bump in the lower.
between these bumps, the midrange usually suffers.

please do not mistake that clarity and punch make good spekers..it is very very wrong

Good questions are
1. how does it Image ? (Soundstage is important as to some extent it implies lesser distortion)
2. how is its Tonality. ie does the sitar sound like a sitar or does Asha bhosle soundmelodius or s bit screetchy...
etc etc (youl find enough in the web)

Any speaker that impresses you in the first 15 min is suspect..listen to it for more than an hour and see if it gives you a headache or if it makes u feel good...

ARJ is right.....please listen to him....I have heard and known many who have been swayed by the boom and tizz, mistaking it for quality and hi fidelity sound.....poor fellows....little do they know they will end up quite deaf later on

Just kidding...but please listen to arj.

Has anyone tried Pulz speakers? I remember listening to a BS speaker may years ago with their pre/power amp and the sound was quite impressive.

Hello Folks, u guys have reflected my exact concerns. before landing up at Padam i checked out wharfdale, kef, jbl & bose. they failed to mesmerise me where pandam did suceed. i was originally going in for th whole branded setup. yamaha and you kno wha..but this guy firts introduced me to pulz amps and preamps and then his basic satellites. it took me to diffrent world , quite literally. i listen to everythin from jazz to opera to trance. and had nearly ten diffrent kinda genres put to test. if anyone here has not tried this combination (pulz and pandam) shld definetly give it a try. i'm no big audiophile but i think i have a good ear.

to answer jeeves Q: Puz makes one of the most "true" speaker ever. listenin to Jazz is quite an experince on one. if you dont listen to jazz you'll surely start listenin to. again it might not be a good fit for rave and technoe stuff.

neckie, if it does it for you Good for you !and consider yourself very lucky

I am a big sceptic when it comes to Speakers, especially in the low cost .
after 3 years of auditioning most brands from $200 to $40000, getting the midrange right along with a neutral response and also fitm my "Ear" is the most difficult.(And i really do NOT have a golden ear..)

Would be seriously interested in understanding as to
*what you looked for in the speakers,
*what tracks you played on them and how long
*what factors were better done by these that helped you make up your mind.
This would give a more objective look at why the speakers are better than the others you mentioned !

Regards

Arj,
I have heard the Pulz and Pandam. You are right. To my ears they sounded 'bright' and 'punchy'.

In fact a couple of years back Prashant was trying to get me to buy a pair of active Genelec studio monitors. His argument was that since these speakers were active, I would save a whole lot of money on amplification.

Need I say more!!

However, as you rightly said if the Pulz/Pandam combo works for Neckie, whoare we to disagree .

As echoed in a previous series of threads, to each his own.

Amen

Guy's,

I heard the Pandam + Pulz combo. Good value for money. Shouls be great for small rooms.

To my not too refined ear's though, I felt the mid range was not up to the mark. I heard the Genelec was good but at 65k each for an active midrange I would put my money on the Arita's + Nad combo. Hey, this is my personal opinion!!

For the Genelec active floorstander at 300k each. Great sound and all that BUT not a value proposition!!! Personal opinion again !!!!

guy i think i hit the wrong note here. i sincerely appreciate and respect the comments you all have made here. and i DO NOT totally disagree with it. i must add here that this is a budget combo. which i feel is good to have in long run (Pulz amps and preamps ie.). i have had my ear ache in tannoys etal. but with pandam i never noticed the same. lemme add i play my stuff as flat as possible. some of the tracks tht i played were from eagles unplugged, alice in chains unplugged, metallica black album, infected mushroom, nnenne freelon, patricia barber and couple of movie clips etal. i must add Pulz sounds much more "true" than the latter. again for 6600bucks a pair for pandam satellites, it was well within my budget for now.

what i did not like in bose was tht i thought it played all the music i played in a certain boomy way..i hated the acoustimass series..bookshelfs (301) were ok. again not recommeded. as for JBL it was too treblish for me. probably good for reggae and trance. of the lot KEF sounded very natural, but were too expoensive. ithink if you like the way Kef sounds you could blindly buy speakers from pulz.

Guys. I respect you all. your valable tips would be really appreciated. hey does anyone have any sugestions for subwoofer placements for a 2.1 system to begin with? in a 200 11/12ft room?

Neckie,

Pandam bookshelves + Pulz pre/amp pair + Subwoofer will come for around 40K. Add an equaliser (10-15K) later if music is priority or the satellites(7k) if you are a moovie buff.Another pulz amp for the sub woofer later (if you want more contol on the bass) and you have as acomplete a system as possible. Final tally will be under 70k. But with 40 k to start you are almost there!!

One caveat though, if you are too much in to blues & jazz, the mid range will feel cluttered.

Another point to note- most consumer durables now have a limited life span, so you will probably change the whole set up in 5 years time. So, GO FOR IT NOW!!!!

Neckie,
Relax man.To each his own.I suppose the Pulz/Pandam combination are good for what they are.And given your tastes in music, they should be just fine.

I think the point being made here is that a good system is all about balance and many a time that means doing justice to the mid-range, which can get totally drowned out, by either shrill treble or boomy bass or a combination of the two.

And mids are very, very critical to a whole variety of music esp Western Classical,Accoustic Jazz etc.

BTW why don't you audition Norge. He is also at Hammersmith, on the second floor.

His top of the line stereo amp retails for 9 K (115wpc @4ohms)and he does bookshelves foe another 9K. I have personally heard these and thought them to excellent VFM.

Roshan, I think that studio monitors are good for studios and not suited for a HIFI setup.

Cheers

Guys!!

Last week I listened to the Pandams, and this week the Lithos.

My suggestion is listen to both before you decide!!

No towers. The satellite subwoofer combo is 15 k. VFM. If you are inclined towards satellites worth a 'dekho'
Bookshelves + active subwoofer 40K. Great sound. Not VFM.

the only point i'm trying to make here is Pandam is a good company. i would strongly suggest you folks to get speakers customized from him..for eg gor for a 12" inch speaker with bullet tweets and mids...believe me it's unreal. value for clubbin and no tin ears.

I went to pandam last week. He has not make any custom speakers for the "last 10-12 years". He only flogs his satellites, book shelves and subs. Also some other imported stuff.

His speakers are good.
