Need help on speakers and speaker cable

Hi,

Just logged into this site today. However have been going through some of the earlier archived topics and found them to be very helpful and informative. Used to browse through forms like Audioholics and ecoustics when i chanced upon this site. Was delighted on finally coming upon an India-based audiophile forum since i firmly belive that its forums like this that gives an audiophile 'valid' and believeable info.

Coming to the point, as can be inferred from the title, i wanted to get an idea about a few Flrs that i am looking at purchasing. Have heard the Diamond 8.4 (not the Diamond 8.3) and like it for the bass(my budget is roundabouts 20K). Have also heard good things about the Monitor 60 from Polk. Apart from that also demoed Mordaunt shorts 904. I need to partner the speaker with a NAD 320 amp(Will be purchasing this too). Hence wanted to know which combo would sound best. I could have demoed them together but unfortunately no retailer stock all speakers with the NAD amp(Currently based out of Chennai)

I also have a Yamaha RX-V350 AVR coupled with four 4600 Onkyo BS speakers and an SL-107 Sub. I watch a lot of movies and hence got this around a year back but since my wife loves to listen to music, she didn't like the present setup. Hence planning to buy the above for her for her birthday.

Also can anyone let me know which speaker cable should i go in for? I am a newbie in this and have yet to find my feet in a lot of technicalities that i found floating around this forum.

2 questions - Where are you getting NAD in Chennai from? Am based out of Chennai myself and looking for a NAD for quite sometime.
Are you looking to sell off some of your old gear?

No, i like my present HT setup and don't intend upgrading it anytime soon.

Even I wasn't able to get the NAD anywhere in Chennai (Audio ppl, ProFX, Spencer store and Promusic are some of the stores that i have visited in Chennai). Have asked for the amp from Soundnvision in Hyd(Said they would be getting some stock soon). Also got the diamond quotes from Soundnvision in Pune for 21K (Including shipping to Chennai)..demoed them at Promusic-Chennai a few months back.

Try getting as many things from your local dealers until there is a huge price difference (around 25% and above), simply cant play around with the service part ! Even while installation and other small upgrades you will need the service guy for smallest of the queries. So better have him as close to your door step as possible.

Thanks for the advice, Abhi. The problem is not about the price but that of avalability. I don't like what i have seen so far here in Chennai. And my mind is set on the NAD 320 after i heard it at my friend's place(also constrained by the budget). Also even if i happen to source the stuff from Chennai, there is no saying that i will be around in Chennai for long since i am in a transferable job. In fact hoping for a shift to Mumbai.

Have not heard the Yamaha AX-396/496 but since i have a Yamaha AVR was wondering how it performs. Can anyone here give me an idea?

Nice to have u on the forum.
well, i actually have the combo u are looking at.
i have the diamond 8.4 and the Nad 320Bee. to tell you the truth i think u can do better on the speakers(but may have to shell out double the amount). the Nad really finds it hard to drive the 8.4s and maybe its the room acoustics(actuallly i'm sure it is the room) cause the speakers have really come down in my eyes. maybe its because i have been listening to some great stuff at people's places and not to mention the CDP that i am using. but, the Nad is good. check out arcam and marantz if u have not done so.
regarding the speakers if u are hard pressed on cash either save up and buy better ones else go for the diamonds as they kick ass for 20k. BTW drop by my place if u want to check them out. ie. is if u are in Bangalore.

p.s: have heard both the yamahas and they it is best to stay away from them. then again u can try them with the diamonds as the speakers they wre paired with were very bad(torvin phantom 9,Yuck!!)

Thanks Ben. That was a nice idea u gave me. I could actually present her the amp for her birthday and let her know that a couple of months down the line, we could get better speakers.

Based out of Chennai so hard to drop by at your place but if i happen to come by Bangalore soon then will definitely drop you a line.

However looking at Prithvi's mail and AP, it must be great to have places like that in Bangalore where one can go and audition to one's liking. Unfortunately i have yet to come across anybody/anyplace in Chennai who possess even a working level of expertise in Audiophile components.

very much true my friend.and it is not worth the time and effort ranting abt how inept the showroom chaps are ,save for some exceptions.

look at acoustic energy and athena which are supposed to be better and the cadence diva and the acoustic portraits. check out jbl. i personally like jbl.
even think of going for a pair of standmounts as they can seriously kick ass and perform far above the low priced floorstanders. it all depends on the type of music u listen to and the room dimensiona and more importantly if u are set on having a pair of floorstaders(some people are and they regret it (like me) when they listen to a pair of excelllent standmounts))
