I was a sceptic on the value of a good CD player till I read some interesting experiences of people who had actually used CD players. Thanks!

I checked out a Denon CD player costing around Rs 25,000 today with a Yamaha stereo amplifier and Mission M74i speakers all of the same price today. The sound was ethereal. When the CD player was replaced by a Samsung DVD player, the sound quality dropped. The beauty and clarity were missing and the sound was well just ordinary.

I want your experiences with DVD vs CD players. Re CD players, would Marantz be a better bet than a Denon? What about a cheaper Yamaha?

P.S: I have already taken a stereo system that's not the ultimate goods, but fits within my budget. A Pulz RS-250 power amplifer and Status 203 bookshelf speakers. Since Pulz sells mainly to studios, its system sounds balanced with no boost to any frequencies. Good for really long listening sessions. Since I lack a source, my trusty computer fills the gap. But what I heard today blew away my home system by miles (at thrice the cost).

I would never underestimate the impact a good cd player can have one the system.. but the problem, in my opinion, is that traditionally big AV brands such as Yamah or Marantz like you mentioned might not be able to provide the best quality.

I had a 15 year old Teac CD player which just started giving too many problems and just became very expensive to maintain so i decide to buy a new one.. tested Denon, Teac again , Marantz , Yamaha , Nakamichi... and surprise behold the one i fell in love with was a discontinued model of a Philips CD player (which never saw the light of day in India)... mind bvlowing quality!!! just threw everything out of the room.. and i got it for... 1200 bucks (INR).. the people who were selling it just did not realize or more importantly appreciate the unit.. just that i did not have "look"..whatever that means!

So try out everything.. go with your ear most importantly..and test ut everything in terms of features

ciao

I wish I were lucky enough to find a great CD player that is also cheap. AVMax had mentioned a Toshiba DVD player as being relatively good in two-channel. Or I will have to spend the bucks for a Marantz or a Harman Kardon (recommended on this forum). A true CD player at Rs 25,000 is far too expensive. The rest of my stereo system costs that amount and I am cash strapped.

Hi Neutral,
Why dont you try NAD 521bee CDP. If you are at Bangalore then you can check them out at Sonodyne listening room. But I think it will be available elsewhere also. They are priced around 15k and is really worth looking at.

I'll go with Abhi on this.
I had checked out the NAD521BEE with NAD320BEE and Tannoy Fusion 4 at Music Ranch, Bangalore. But its cost was 18K here.

Music absolutly mindblowing!!!

Hi again,

The NAD's pretty a cool unit but if that is not meeting your budget then i can, i think, get my hands on a 5 month old Onkyo DX C380/ 390 6 Disc CD Changer for between 9-12k... i also have a 200 Disc Sony changer for about 15k, a sony 5 disc for around 8k and a pioneer 51 disc for about 9k...

Thanks Abhi Pani,

I'll check out the NAD 521 BEE in Bombay. If it's as good as the Denon I heard, it will be worth it. Does the NAD also play MP3s or will I also have to take a DVD player?

NAD 521BEE is only a CDP.

In my opinion, they should easily match the Denon and even surpass them (provided similar price range)
