I had the opportunity to listen to one mother of an amp yesterday at absolute phase. It is the Unison Research unico “teatro”. 8 channel hybrid power amp.
http://www.unisonresearch.com/unico/unicoteatro.asp
One behemoth of an amp weighing 68kg and it is rated only 90watt per channel. Connected to the Proac studio 140, it was digging out details like the best I have heard. Very analogue and natural sounding. The brush on the drum leather sounded as if somebody was sitting on the drums right in front of me and doing it for real. The macro and micro dynamics and attack have to be heard to be believed! Only amp I can recall which compares is the Plinius class A. One thing I keep noticing is the size and build-quality of all these fantastic amps. They all look as if they are rated at 1000watts per channel. Most flagship receivers which are quite tiny compared to these and will have an even more tiny power amp section touts them as 250 watts per channel for all the 7 channels. I sometimes wonder ! Any thoughts ?
It sells at around 8000 euro. Already sold to some lucky bugger in coimbatore.

These are 90 watts per channel - Class A amps. Should expect to see better reproduction of sound but also much higher power dissipation.

You will probably need air conditioning to keep these from heating up the room. Check out http://sound.westhost.com/class-a.htm for more details on amplifiers.

Could you give us the details of rest of the setup. The preamp/CD-player and the speakers. Prithvi, I would have loved to hear these.

Linn clasik used as transport – Audiolab DAC – Audio space tube pre – Unico amp – proac studio 140 speakers. Bi-wired XLO and van den hul speaker cables. It may be around for the weekend. I am not sure.

Vinny,
It was not bi-wired but quad amped by the unico teatro which was bridged into four channels pumping out 300w rms each. The cables were VDH Revelation for the Highs and XLO Signature Reference Signature for the LOWs.

Excellent setup. However could not understand pairing of 8000 euro amps with 1400 pound speaker. I assume the setup was only for burnin test for the amp.

Clearly the setup is well beyond the range of us mere mortals.

Sorry for the typo. I was meaning to say bi-amped.. I guess it was bridged and quad-amped.

hi square wave,

Many if not almost all av receivers make their power ratings of the amps like in fake RMS. The true amp is the one which is rated at TRUE RMS???? hmmmm what this term actually mean? the value of general RMS is gone like from common companies like pioneer os sony or denon ( mid end ones ) but see example...

If denon delivers about 270watts per channel in 7 channels then it need not less than about 2000VA of transformer in general for perfect match it requires about 4000VA for better and for really highend ones like that one that you have said it need about approximately IN class A mode they require not less than min 8000VA which means that a very very massive transformer with extreme filter capacitors etc.. thats why it weigh 68kg that too with massive heatsinks. Even this is the reaso why krell has that much wieght . When you are driving hard loads like 2 ohms then you need more current so the transformer will be having more headroom so that

In denon i think its about 1400VA for total 7 channels for 270watts per channel..

In reality lets check if the amp is worked out in class AB mode then the calulations are...

for seven channels 1400/7 = 200VA so if we divide it by two its about 100 Watts per channel is the true rating of the 7 channel surround receiver.

But one thing is sure man Prithvi gets very genuine equipments. In very near future I will buy a good amp from him.

approximately a 2000VA trans weighs about 6kg so a 8000VA trans weighing about 24kg is not a big thing with caps goes easily to 30kg+

Denons are reputed to have a good preamp section. When combined with an external amp provide very good performance. Rotels and Arcams are typically rated with all channels driven simultenesouly. NADs are also very highly respected but I am not sure of the amp performance.

The Unison specs seems to be in an entirely different league. Running in pure class A will require significantly more qusceient current and may require a big heat sink.

Interestingly the Emotiva MPS-1 (http://www.av123.com...cessors&product=18.1) is a class H amp weighing over 50 kgs.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I've auditioned some Jungson gear lately and was quite impressed, especially considering the price. I ended up buying a JA-88D stereo amp: 160'000uF, 30kg, 2x80W Class A...

The new digital amps would of course be deviation Especially the Sonic Impact, the Dr Amp and the Flying Moles. all less than 2-3 kilos and apparently pretty amazing !

had a chance to listen to a sonic Impact recently . I think they are the best budget choices for just USD30. Definitely better than the Nad 320 BEE i used to own. I went in highly skeptical and am still a bit surprised.

Heard that the flying mole monoblocks at around USD500 a pair are absolut corkers, but unfortunately do not have an opportunity to hear them as they are Jap based.

hi Arj,
Even there was an another product very surprising the quality of the amp is pretty amazing and that too for just 39 dollars... I myself couldnt believe... I always use to believe that only discreet components can sound well but check this link to get amazed..

http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/t-amp_e.html

No matter its true digital amp the toroidal can come from 100% to 60% in weight...but here weight is not a big factor when u come to digital amps...

Hi Prithvi !
Both are pretty (&) interesting. I think both are a bit forward

Sonic_Master the t-amp is the same Sonic Impact... pretty amazing thig I must say. is a good choice if you have 90db 8 ohm speakers....qt at that price it definitely is a bargain..put in a 13.8 V 1.2 amp dc output, preferable regulated and you might beat the entry level Nads and rotels

hi Arj there are even some higherend version of the class T digital amps but I prefer to use analog amps like in the Jeff Rowlands Model amps or Concentra amps even they use small discreet components. Now its not about that its either discreet or analog but it must sound good. Nothing more than that.

The output current of my design is good about 14amps so it can easily drive almost any speaker. But not damn heavy subwoofers

Let me come to Bangalore and after that I will show u this amps and speakers. I am in search of good pcb designing firm and also the SMT tech with complete package devs so after that I will contact you guys...

cheers...
