Need some advice.

I am thinking of getting a 2.1 active speaker set up for my comp in the office.I think I work better listening to music ;)and the folks here don't seem to mind.

Are the Altec Lansing/creative combos any good?

I have a budget of around 2.5 K tops.

Any suggestions

Altec Lansing ATP3 is also good enough. Costs around 3-4K.

I got it...same one that comes with Compaq PC right...I too have the same. I just love the highs but it does not have any bass....I have seen some similar speakers which have good bass as well.

How about a pair of full-range car-audio speakers (5 1/4" speaker from the likes of Alpine, Infinity, etc.,) and marry them to an amp from Norge...think that would be better than most of these computer speakers.

But the cost might work out some where between 4-5K ..

Siva,
what size boxes do you reckon one would need for car drivers ?

Hi Siva, that is really a very good idea !

do you know of any high sensitivity car speakers ? I have been very impressed with the SI T amp I have bought.

Since its highest output is 15 W at 4 ohms, a good sensitive car speaker with 4 Ohms nominal should be a good idea... also it could be easily setup since enclosure design is not a problem. should work out as much better than these computer speakers.

Manek,

I have not played around with car audio drivers...so do not have an answer for you. But i would assume it would depend on the driver specs. However, to be practical i think we can live with a simple 2-5 liter sealed box (assuming a 5 1/4 inch driver)...small enough to be placed near a computer.

There is a small problem. Since the speakers will be placed near a computer monitor, you will have to shield the driver by placing another magnet (you can strip a magnet from one of the old and unusable drivers) behind the driver.

Arj,

I really do not know of any particular car audio speakers to recommend one.

But i would think 15w should be sufficient for most car speakers.

Cheers
Siva.

now that gives me another idea...what about using 2-way(coaxial) car audio speakers in a slightly larger box(10-11 lts) and make small bookshelf speakers ?

Todays companies do make 30-40+watts car speakers which give a decent spl output....

Artis S880 surround sound speakers are good partners for a computer. You can use them in stereo mode as well by just employing a dual headphone adaptor.

Abhi and Mohan,
How good are JBL Pro speakers that come inbuilt into Compaq computers? Are they inferior to the Platinum model?
